The woman, surnamed Chou, was sitting behind third base during a game two years ago between the La New Bears and Brother Elephants when a foul ball drilled her in the left eye. After medical treatment her eyesight dropped to 20/400, leaving her unable to perform housework.

Chou sued the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) for NT$5,410,000. The judge ruled against her, noting that Chou chose to sit behind third base when seats with safety nets are also available at the ballpark and is therefore responsible for putting herself at risk. Chou can appeal the ruling.
