STORY: French President Francois Hollande met with German President Joachim Gauck at the Elysee palace in Paris on Monday.

The visit comes after a summit of euro zone leaders in Brussels where agreement was reached to let their rescue fund inject aid directly into stricken banks starting in 2013. The agreement will also allow intervention in bond markets to support troubled member states.

French Socialists were quick to claim the deal as a victory for Hollande, who has lobbied for bold short-term steps to stem the crisis.
