Honda Minako was extremely ill when she performed this Christmas Concert; she had a fever in excess of 31C, 101F. it would be her last concert in Tokyo. Two weeks later she would be diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia and immediately hospitalized.
The "Nessun Dorma" is a "piece of cake" for most altos, baritones, and tenors, but it is fraught with danger for a soprano; even Joan Sutherland and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf had difficulty with it.....Minako "nails" it.
