As if Greece doesn't have enough to worry about, the country is trying to solve the problem of illegal immigrants who have swarmed into the center of Athens over the past decade. Many of the immigrants are forced into a life of crime in order to survive, disrupting society and the economy. The Greek government has started rounding up the illegal immigrants and deporting them.

With elections just a month away, Greece is battling its problem of illegal immigrants who have turned the center of the historic city of Athens into a big ghetto.

Many of the immigrants are involved with crime and locals are concerned for their safety.

The president of the New Democracy political party spoke about the problem.

[Antonis Samaras, President, New Democracy]:
"The problem of illegal immigrants is getting bigger and bigger and we pretend not to notice. I am going to be perfectly clear on the fact that we have to take over our cities again."

Police have been carrying out daily raids in areas where are immigrants are living illegally with no official documents.

[Antonis Samaras, President, New Democracy]:
"We will start by transporting the illegal immigrants to facilities away from our cities and neighborhoods, probably military camps. They will be accommodated there until they are finally deported to their countries."

He says the operation's goals are simple and straightforward.

[Antonis Samaras, President, New Democracy]:
"Our first and foremost goal is to stop the uncontrollable flow of illegal immigrants to Greece and our second goal is to have them deported to where they came."

The government believes these measures will reduce the crime rate and bring stability to society as well as help the economy improve.
