Eighth Tibetan Self-Immolates in Protest

Over the weekend, an eighth Tibetan set himself on fire in protest of the Chinese regime's rule, according to Free Tibet. It comes right after a photo of the first monk who self-immolated emerges.
19-year-old Northu Dathul is a former monk, who disrobed back in June 2010. He was said to have called out, "Tibet Needs Freedom!" and for the Dalai Lama to return, before setting himself ablaze on Saturday in Aba, ten minutes to noon.
Shortly after, Chinese police extinguished the fire and beat him, but eyewitnesses say Northu did not lose his life. His current whereabouts are unknown. Calls to the Aba prefecture police bureau went unanswered.
This is the eighth protest of this nature, where young monks set themselves on fire in protest. The first to do so this year was 21-year-old Phuntsog, who died one day after his protest in mid March. A photograph of him has recently surfaced, likely taken right after police extinguished the flames.
According to Free Tibet, many young monks are ready to die in a sacrificial act of desperation to draw media attention. There were reported pamphlets being circulated in the streets that said, "many more people were prepared to give up their lives in protest" should Chinese policies continue.
