Models in wool turn Madrid's main upmarket shopping street into a giant catwalk. It's all part of the Campaign for Wool, and its aim is to promote the eco-friendly wool fabric.

Fashion models dressed in wool strut their stuff on Madrid's main up-market shopping street on Thursday.

The fashion parade is part of this year's Campaign for Wool, launched by Prince Charles in 2010 to promote wool and its ecological benefits.

John Thorley, chairman of the Campaign for Wool, cut a symbolic wool ribbon to unveil the "Avenue of Wool."

[John Thorley, Chairman, Campaign for Wool]:
"All of it was started by Prince Charles who was very concerned about the fact that wool was reducing in quantities all around the world. And that is a phenomenon the he wasn't prepared to allow to continue. He asked me if I would work to put people together from around the world to develop a campaign which would stimulate interest and get wool back on to the program."

The fashion designer Estrella Archs dressed the famous street with giant clouds and sculptures made of wool to set the scene for the 24 models that presented her creations.

More than 40 shops have expressed their support to the project, some by dressing their shop windows with wool themes and others are selling wool products during the week.

Kara Hurry, regional marketing manager for Woolmark International says that low revenues have made farming a tough way of making a living.

[Kara Hurry, Marketing Manager, Woolmark International]:
"Farmers around the world have actually for many years been paid less for their wool than it cost them to shear their sheep. So our hope with the campaign for wool is to encourage people to make a natural purchasing decision and therefore make farming a sustainable industry."
