An acid spill in eastern China has cut off drinking water for more than half a million people.

It happened after a truck with 20 tons of overturned. Rain has washed the chemical into the Xin'an River, 90 miles southwest of Hangzhou City.

Chinese authorities say an emergency worker has died and that water plants have to be shut down.

Acid concentration remains more than 900 times the safe drinking water limit.

Used to make plastics, carbolic acid can cause burns, damage to internal organs and the nervous system.
