Passengers angry about delays in morning commute set fire to train cars in Buenos Aires. A derailed train may have triggered the violence.

Passengers angry over delays of a train entering Argentina's capitol Buenos Aires on Monday set several train cars on fire and sacked ticket booths.

A train derailed on a busy line connecting Buenos Aires' commercial district with the eastern suburbs, leaving thousands of commuters stranded at stations.

Enraged commuters set fire to train cars in three different stations.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to put the fires out, but firefighter Juan Carlos Samproski said passengers turned on them as well.

[Juan Carlos Samproski, Argentine Fireman]:
"When we got here with the crew, the first train car was already on fire. When we started to get ready to work, they started throwing rocks at us."

Local newspapers also reported that demonstrators broke into ticket booths and stole money.

Firefighters were forced to work around thousands of commuters.

[Juan Carlos Samproski, Argentine Fireman]:
"There was a ton of protesters. I don't know how many, but there was a ton of them, thousands."

The train company announced service would be suspended at least for the rest of the day.

One website reported that the derailed train may have been sabotage, saying security cameras had been removed where the train went off the tracks. No motive was given.
