Tibetan students in India are calling for worldwide 'fast for freedom' protesting against Chinese crackdown on Tibetans. The call comes after a 20-year-old Tibetan monk self-immolated himself protesting Chinese atrocities following a crackdown in Ngaba.
Tibetan students in Dharamsala, India are calling for a worldwide "fast for freedom," protesting the Chinese regime's crackdown on Tibetans.
[Tenzin, Spokesperson, Students for a Free Tibet]:
"We are here in solidarity with Tibetans in Ngaba, where recently there has been severe crackdown inside Ngaba. Particularly, a 20-year-old monk who self-immolated himself for the cause of Tibet. So we are here in solidarity with him and tomorrow all across the world we have this global fast in countries like America, Canada, UK and different parts across the world."
Hundreds of students fasted, and were protesting silently.
Tenzin says the fast is to put pressure on Chinese authorities.
[Tenzin, Spokesperson, Students for a Free Tibet]:
"The most important message is to mean this stop the current crackdown inside Tibet and this intensive crackdown happening inside Tibet and stop all those baseless arrests that's currently undergoing inside Tibet."
An estimated 80,000 Tibetans, along with their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, arrived in India in 1959 after an unsuccessful uprising against Chinese rule.
