A senior Chinese official is being investigated for corruption in the highest level corruption probe in years. Railway Minister Liu Zhijun oversaw hundreds of billions of dollars invested into China's fast-expanding rail network.

Criminal charges could be laid against China's Railway Minister Liu Zhijun. According to state media on Saturday, Liu was placed under investigation for, quote, "serious disciplinary violations." He's also been removed from his post.

State media gave no further details.

Liu is the most senior Chinese official to come under investigation in years. He oversaw a nationwide expansion of China's high-speed rail network—which could cost $120 billion a year. He'd been railway minister since 2003 and championed a surge of investment into the sector.

In 2006, Liu Zhijun's brother was handed a suspended death sentence for crimes that included hiring an assassin to kill a man who revealed his corruption.

According to state media, last year more than 140,000 Chinese officials were punished for disciplinary violations. More than 5,000 were at or above the county level.
