Snow and sleet have brought cars to a standstill in parts of southwest China. Conditions were so bad on one highway, that a nine mile backup left as many as eight thousand people stranded on the road.

A cold wave brings heavy snow and sleet across southwest China. According to state media, tens of thousands of vehicles were stranded on highways and accidents were reported on main roads.

Sleet fell on the New Year weekend in Guizhou and Guangxi provinces, with ice patches forming on roads.

All express highways in the area were shut down, leading to a massive traffic gridlock.

As many as eight thousand people are stranded in a nine-mile-long queue of trapped vehicles on the highway linking Guizhou Province and Guangxi.

The neighboring Sichuan Province was also plagued by heavy snow and several car accidents have been reported.

The National Meteorological Center forecasts heavy snow and sleet could continue in many parts of southwest China for the rest of the week.
