A major fire breaks out at a garment factory near the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka. At least 25 people are killed and about 100 are injured. Most of the workers were women.

On Tuesday a fire at a multi-story garment factory killed 25 people and injured more than 100.

The fire broke out on the ninth floor of the factory at Ashulia, north of Dhaka, and quickly spread.

It took more than five hours to douse the blaze.

[Mofizur Rahman, Eyewitness]:
"At the very beginning when the building caught fire, I saw about ten bodies that were taken out. Now I suspect there will be more bodies inside, as the tenth and eleventh floor caught fire."

Authorities say that the number of deaths was likely to increase as several of the fire victims were in a critical condition.

At least 50 people with serious burns were taken to hospitals. Some of them were injured in a stampede as hundreds of workers tried to escape.

Soldiers from a nearby military district joined the rescue efforts.

More than 10,000 people, most of them women, work at the factory.

Investigations into the cause of the blaze are underway.
