Japanese Encephalitis Vaccination Campaign Gains Traction

On Tuesday, children in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh were immunized against the Japanese Encephalitis virus.

A camp by the National Encephalitis Eradication Program was set up to provide the locals with the vaccination.

People were turning out in large numbers.

[Jyoti Mishra, Local Villager]:
"We have come to get immunized from Japanese Encephalitis."

[R. N. Singh, National Encephalitis Eradication Program]:
"It is the responsibility of the society to go to these booths and get vaccinated."

Japanese Encephalitis is a virus that causes an acute inflammation of the brain, which mainly targets kids 15-years-old and under.

The disease first invaded India in 1978.

Since then thousands of children have either succumbed or became physically and mentally disabled due to Japanese Encephalitis.
