The Hawian islands, the birthplace of cliff diving.

The sport traces its roots back to the tribal chief Kahikili who would dive from Hawaii’s cliffs and challenge his warriors to do the same.

And it is back to Hawaii for the final of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series.

Divers must impress the judges as they jump from a platform 26 meters above the water.

British Diver Gary Hunt came second last year and after competing in 5 locations this year, arrived in Hawaii top of the table. Although Colombian competitor Orlando Duque won the final round, Hunt had enough points from earlier rounds to remain in the lead and clinch this year’s title of world cliff diving champion.

“For me, I feel really happy. I mean, again, I was on the podium for all the stops, and getting 4 out of 6 wins, I’m over the moon. Overall, there’s a few things I need to work on, but yeah, I’m happy.”

Duque said he was happy with second place and was keen to emphasise Hunt’s achievement.

[Orlando Duque, 2nd Place (Colombia)]:
“You know, I feel pretty good, second place is, I think the best I could do. Halfway through the season Gary was doing very good already and he kind of pulled away from all of us.”

Russian competitor Artem Silchenko said he made a mistake in an earlier round in Sisikon, Switzerland, which took away his chances of winning. But he still managed to finish 3rd.

[Artem Silchenko, 3rd Place (Russia)]:
“In Sisikon I made a very big mistake. But, I’m so, so, happy, 3rd place in the world series, it’s beautiful.”

In total 12 competitors from 9 countries competed in this year’s world series No one can deny that Englishman Gary Hunt has shone this season as one of the brightest talents in the sport.
