"Start!" (male)

This signals the start, and 15 teams rush to the destination. It’s the annual sailing regatta for youngsters, traditionally held on the Dnieper River in Kiev on the last weekend of summer.

In the competing boats there are children between the ages of 3 and 16 with an adult captain to assist them.

[Oleg Yamenko, Chief Judge]: (male, Russian)
"The children are in control of the boat and captain is there to help them".

The competition consists of teams sailing around two signs, without breaking the rules. There is a small mishap, but mostly the youngsters accomplish the challenge.

”The yacht Mambo - 2 finished first. Please, record their time." (male, Russian)

The winners are greeted by fans and parents. Children are greatly impressed by this river sailing day. The youngest member of the yacht "Mamba" is only 4 years old.

[Oles, "Mambo-2” Yacht Crew]: (male, Ukrainian)
"That yacht took over us! And then we were ahead of it like this!"

The yacht "Idmaris" finishes in the first three. Its team has 2 boys and one girl. The captain reports that the team worked harmoniously.

[Pavel Viryukovich, "Idmaris" Yacht Captain]: (male, Russian)
"The eldest child managed the front sail. The middle one was telling us which yacht is where. The youngest just participated as a spectator".

[Danil, “Idmaris" Yacht Crew]: (male, Russian )
"I was packing canvas, pulling the hooks. I worked”.

All the children are working here: hanging fenders, tying knots. Parents are happy – their sailor children are getting practical life skills.

[Zhanna Maksimenko-Dovgich, mother of Oles]: (female, Ukr)
"They have some purpose in life. Now children mostly sit in front of the computer at home, and don’t go out. They do not know what to do when they are in the natural environment. Our children will never go amiss. I think it teaches them to survive in the world in any conditions”.
