Summertime Brings More Abandoned Dogs in Israel

This female pup was found several days ago wandering in the streets in a bad state of exhaustion, suffering from hunger and an aggravated skin condition.

It is now in the dog shelter of the “Let the Animals Live” association, where it’s getting treatment.

It is not the only dog with such history. Now, at the height of summer, the shelter is fully occupied by more than 200 dogs, most of which were abandoned by their owners.

[Sharon Levinger, Dog shelter manager]: (Male, Hebrew)
“Some people, when leaving their homes for vacation, do not look for a solution for their dog during that period. The best case scenario is coming to us to talk. In other cases I find the dog tied to a gate or we find them wandering along the roads, in hotel zones, etc. Their owners just left them there.”

The moment a call reporting a dog in distress is received in the shelter, a special ambulance is sent to collect it.

[Dr. Dana H.Simon, Veterinarian at the dog shelter]: (Female, Hebrew)
“If the dog is brought here in a state of exhaustion we start an infusion of liquid and nourishment which go through the vein straight to the cells, so the treatment works fast and is more intensive.”

Following the treatment, the dog gets vaccinated and continues to be monitored. It is then integrated into one of the shelter’s yards with other dogs according to its temperament.

This place provides a temporary shelter for dogs in hopes that a true home will be eventually found for each of them.

It is of the utmost importance for the staff members that the new owner takes full responsibility for the dog’s needs and provides a home for life.
