South Korea Concerned over North Korea's Twittering

Reclusive North Korea has opened accounts on both Twitter and YouTube. South Korea believes it may be to promote its communist propaganda and are looking at ways to handle the issue.
On Wednesday South Korea says it’s examining ways to deal with North Korea's decision to join social network systems Twitter and YouTube, possibly to promote its communist propaganda.

Seoul's Yonhap News Agency reported North Korea started twittering, saying the reclusive country had opened an account with Twitter last week.

Yonhap added the opening of the Twitter account had been announced last Saturday. The name of the Twitter account is the Korean word meaning "our nation."

South Korea's response to its communist neighbor's entry into Twitter and YouTube was cautious.

A Unification Ministry spokesperson told a news briefing that South Korea would examine details, checking how the North will be using these accounts.

"We will examine how to apply the law of North-South Korean Exchanges and Cooperation to South Korean citizens' contacts with North Korean global social network systems. And we will also discuss this matter with some other government organizations on how to handle it.”

Yonhap News Agency said North Korea registered an account with YouTube last month and uploaded clips that praised its leader and defended itself against accusations that it attacked a South Korean warship.

The U.S. State Department expressed hope on Tuesday that North Korea's entry into the global social networking systems would help information to reach the reclusive regime.
