UN says recovery in Pakistan will cost billions

Flood victims across Pakistan are still in their ruined homes or in makeshift camps mourning for their loved ones killed in the country's worst flooding in decades.

So far more than 1,500 people have died and millions have been left displaced.

Many Pakistanis believe the Pakistani government has been very slow to provide relief efforts for the flood affected victims.

The US and other international partners, including the UN have stepped in to support the government by donating tens of millions of dollars and providing relief supplies and assistance.

But the UN special envoy for the disaster has said that Pakistan will need billions of dollars more from international donors to recover from the floods.

The floodwaters continue to spread south down the country, bringing death and destruction to the central and southern provinces of Punjab and Sindh after devastating the northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Authorities have evacuated thousands of people in several areas, where floodwaters have inundated villages and destroyed thousands of homes.

The Indus river overflowed its banks near the city of Sukkur in Sindh on Sunday, submerging the village of Mor Khan Jatoi with chest-high water and destroying many of its 1,500 mud homes.

The World Food Programme said at least 4 million people will need food assistance across Pakistan for the next three months at a cost of nearly 100 million US dollars.
