The funeral for a slain Pakistani lawmaker was held in Karachi today. After the official was killed, violence broke out in the commericial hub, leaving dozens dead.

Thousands of mourners, relatives and activists attended the funeral of a Pakistani provincial lawmaker gunned down earlier this week.

Raza Haider was a member of the provincial Sindh Assembly… and before his death he renewed calls for a crackdown on militants.

After Haider was killed, violence broke out in Karachi, leading to at least 40 deaths from arson and mob violence.

The government blames the Taliban and the banned militant group Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan for the killing of the lawmaker.

The violence raises fears of instability in Karachi, a city of 18 million and Pakistan's commercial hub.

There are fears that Taliban militants are moving into the city after army offensives against their bases in Pakistan's northwest.

Some analysts said the violence could ultimately affect the economy.

Karachi is home to the country's main port, the central bank and the stock exchange, which has so far seen thin trade and will close an hour early because of the violence.

Government officials also say criminals, including competing drug lords take advantage of the tension, making the job of the police very difficult.
