St. Petersburg Art Students Host French Delegation

A French delegation is in the St. Petersburg as part of a cultural exchange between France and Russia. They visited the St. Petersburg State Academy of Art, where graduate students are showing off some of their latest works… several of which were painted in the French city of Albi (AHL bee).

Drawing department professor Tatiana Hoods describes the experience of painting in the open air in Albi.

[Professor Tatiana Hoods, St. Petersburg Academy of Art]:
"I realized that this is a shock in a good way, the shock of the new location, of the architecture, of the new kind of nature. It is quite strong for the artist, and the effect of practicing in this way is a hundred times higher."

The ancient town and landscapes inspired students to paint for up to 10 hours a day. And their hard work paid off. More than a hundred paintings were produced in two weeks.

The French delegation praised the students’ work.

[Michel Aubry, Consul General of France in St. Petersburg]:
"This is very important because it continues the rich history, which we are celebrating this year, the year of France in Russia and the year of Russia in France. But the goal of this year is not only to celebrate the rich history, but also to attract young people to the issue of Franco-Russian relations."

[Patrick Garnier, Vice Mayor of Albi]:
"They came to us last year, and now we come to look at the exhibition of their works, since staying in our city was a part of their training, too.”

The St. Petersburg State Academy of Art has been around for more than 130 years.
