Russia Gives Poland Kaczynski's Plane Cockpit Recordings
Russia hands over a copy of the late Polish President’s plane flight cockpit recordings. Russia will hang onto the actual black boxes until the investigations are complete.
Russia has handed over to Poland a copy of the flight cockpit recordings from the April 10 plane crash that killed Poland's president and 95 others.
The offering comes amidst official comments that have the potential to sabotage the recently improved relations between the countries.
The actual black cockpit boxes will remain in Russia until the investigation is completed.
Both Russia's Ivanov and Poland's Miller emphasize that cooperation between Moscow - the side investigating the plane crash - and Warsaw have been transparent and unprecedented in speed and detail.
The handing over of the copies of the cockpit recordings is to aid the Polish side in its own investigation and analysis of the crash.
According to Chicago's International Civic Organisation, which sets procedures in investigating plane crashes, not all information from the balckboxes can be made public before the case is closed. This includes communication between the pilots and the towers.
Kaczynski's plane, the Russian-built TU-154 military aircraft, crashed at Smolensk airport in Russia in a thick fog and investigators excluded a blast or the plane's technical failure as the cause of the crash.
The plane was running late for a planned ceremony in nearby Katyn forest. It was the 70th anniversary of the murder of some 22,000 Polish army officers and intellectuals in that forest by the Soviet NKVD secret police.
For decades Moscow blamed the Nazis for the massacre, and only acknowledged its responsibility in 1990, a year after the fall of communism in Poland.
