100 Years Since the 13th Dalai Lama's Exile to India

It’s been a hundred years since the 13th Dalai Lama fled Tibet after an invasion by troops during China’s Qing Dynasty.

At that time, the Thirteenth Dalai Lama, who has since passed away, took refuge in India with his followers.

Two years later, the Manchu Empire collapsed, and the 13th Dalai Lama returned to Tibet.

Tibetans marked the occasion at the main Buddhist temple in Dharamsala.

Members of the Tibetan government-in-exile addressed the gathering.

[Thubten Samphel, Spokesperson, Tibetan Government-In-Exile]:
"100 year in which he first came into exile. So this is a form of commemoration of that important event."

They reminded Tibetans of the great deeds done by the 13th Dalai Lama.

[Thubten Samphel, Spokesperson, Tibetan Government-In-Exile]:
"Tibetans need to remember the great service rendered by the 13th Dalai Lama to the people of Tibet."

India is a home for about 150,000 Tibetan exiles today.
