00:00I think Quinn is an ice man. I think he's really good end-of-game situations.
00:04This guy can really throw the rock, man.
00:09He's a road warrior. This guy goes to Michigan. He goes to Alabama. He wins big
00:15games on the road. He's got all the awkward deliveries, deep ball accuracy.
00:20This guy's a winner and a great competitor.
00:23I love football because you have to be a warrior and you got to be smart at the
00:26same time. It's the best game ever created. I'm the best quarterback in this
00:30draft because of my resiliency. I'm a super, super coachable guy. I can rip it
00:34around for sure. We'll see what Gruden thinks. He's a legend in the industry and
00:37man, I'm just excited to get to sit down with him.
00:48You know me, you know I love football statistics and let me tell you an
00:53impressive stat. The Chevy Silverado is the undisputed champion. Capability,
00:59versatility, and strength. That's a truck with MVP stats. Explore Chevy Silverado at

01:12Quinn Ewers, man, University of Texas. How we doing? Thanks for coming down here. Thanks for having me.
01:19Welcome to Gruden's QB Class. Let's go. Ewers, what did you weigh in officially at the combine?
01:25I was 214. 214? 215 at Pro Day, so. And 6'2"? 6'2". Okay, I love it. South Lake, Texas. You don't
01:34have much of a twang there, do you? That's a good spot. Yeah? No, no Texas twang, huh?
01:38South Lake, Carroll. That's kind of a hot spot. You have had one of the most mysterious high school
01:43careers that I have seen. You're the number one prospect. Hell, I had you as getting scholarship
01:49offers when you were like in, how old were you? Seventh grade? Seventh grade sounds about right.
01:53Tell me about that. Who came in and offered you a scholarship? How'd it happen? Yeah, this is a
01:57funny story. I went to a little summer camp at UNT, and I was young, so I guess I was throwing it
02:04better than all the high school kids, so they pulled me aside. I started throwing the ball, and they
02:08were like, all right, man, how old are you? I'm like, what's going on? I was like, yeah, I'm going
02:14into seventh grade. They cut to the chase. They're like, we're going to offer you a scholarship to
02:19come play ball here. I'm like, all right, we'll see what happens in five years or whatever it was.
02:23That's amazing, man. You've been carrying that number one prospect label a long time now.
02:30You committed to Texas. Is that right? Yeah, my sophomore year of high school. And all of a sudden,
02:35you skip your senior year and go to Ohio State. I just have to hear this. Why would you skip your
02:42senior year, man? I mean, you're shredding people. You know, the Texas legislature wasn't going to
02:47allow high school ball players to get paid, and I had a $1.4 million memorabilia deal in front of me.
02:53Wow. I wasn't going to pass up. As a junior in high school? As a junior in high school. I guess
02:59that's what comes with being the number one prospect. So you go to Ohio State, and you take an early
03:03enrollment. So you're at Ohio State during what would be your senior year? That's correct. I got
03:10there in August. I'm from Ohio, man. We were all excited to get this Ewers guy. And I see you. How
03:18old are you here? About 16? Look at you. You got the long hair, man. You're just standing down there.
03:24Now, it was CJ Stroud, right? That's right. And was McCord there with you? He was. Kyle was there.
03:29Yeah? That's my guy. Yeah. I want to know about CJ Stroud, what you learned at Ohio State the year
03:35that you were there? I'd say the biggest thing I learned from him and Coach Jay was, you know,
03:39kind of what it took to be a college quarterback and kind of what it meant to be who you are for
03:44your teammates and whatnot. And I mean, this was the first dose of college football I had. I want
03:49to know what it is about Texas that brought you back. What was the one or two things that said,
03:52I'm going back home to Texas where I was going to go to start with? I wanted to have my support group
03:57around me to get the initial part of my career going off in the right direction. And then also
04:01being close to the fans, nice. Being in the home state, playing in the burnt orange. Look at that,
04:07man. There's not a whole lot of stuff there. It's the greatest facility ever, isn't it? It's got to be.
04:10What is that hardware you got on your arm, man? What are those? Let me see that. Where? The tattoos on
04:15your right arm. See that? Oh yeah. Let me see that. Show me that. What is that? Arrows going down?
04:21Arrows right there, man. Darts, arrows. I throw darts. So I got some. I like to bow hunt too. You got any more?
04:26You'll like this one right here. How about we zoom in on that bad boy? What is that? Is that a wolf?
04:31A longhorn. It's a longhorn, man. Go on now. With the Texas flag. I got that before I got to Texas,
04:36actually. Man, I come back and coach you. We win a Super Bowl. I'll stamp something on my freaking body
04:41too, man. We'll do it together, man. Especially after the Super Bowl. If I was you, I would never come out.
04:47And they're paying you pretty good to play college football. Why the hell are you coming out? I mean,
04:51I think it's just time for me to go on to the next part of my journey. Does anybody know about this?
04:56Is this why you're coming out of Texas? What is it? You got this pulled up, man? Yeah,
05:00I found it. I should have known that. I should have let my girl post this crap. Look at you. What
05:03the hell is this? What is it? It's some TikTok trend. I don't even have TikTok,
05:10so I didn't know what was going on. I got TikTok, man. I found it. Do you? Yeah. I deleted that crap.
05:15The Chinese ain't taking my stuff, man. Yeah, well, I should delete mine too then,
05:19but I got this. Yeah, you got to delete it, man. I got this, man. All the NFL coaches and scouts
05:24and all the freak of GMs and owners are going to see this, man. Man, they're going to love it,
05:28man. They're going to see some personality. Shut up, man. I ain't going to go there.
05:32You got some big wins, man. And you win a big game. You got to be a big, big game performer. You got
05:38to have some big game preparation, man. But when you got into the big games at Texas,
05:43it just seemed to bring out the best in you. What was that? That's what it's all about.
05:48Those big games, man. That's where the money's made. You know, I wish every game was a big game,
05:52and I wish I kind of treated it all the same. But, you know, we're human beings. You know,
05:57that we know when it's a big game. We know when a big game's coming. And
06:00there's something about that atmosphere when it's a bigger game, you know, instead of,
06:03you know, that's why I like the SEC so much. Playing in the SEC this past year,
06:06going from the Big 12 to the SEC is, I mean, it's obviously different. How do you deal with the
06:11excitement of the big game, the emotions? You know, you got everybody, hey, can I get a ticket
06:15to the game? You know, there's just a lot of juice. There's a lot of distraction. I've always been just
06:20a chill guy. A lot of people say I don't have a sense of urgency. I think, I mean, I got a sense
06:24of urgency. It just looks different than a lot of people. Going into Tuscaloosa last year and doing
06:29what we did, you know, these guys saw me right here. I get up a little bit, but when I needed to,
06:33but these guys saw me right here and they're like, oh, Bama just went up against us and, you know,
06:37we got to put a drive together here in the fourth quarter to go score. They look at me and I'm
06:41chilling on the bench, right? I'm not doing anything crazy. I'm just focusing on myself,
06:46focusing on what I need to do for my teammates. Your leadership style with your teammates in these
06:52big moments, is there a speech that you give or are you just leading with your actions? I'm a big
06:58encourager, man. I speak life into my guys. And to be a good leader, you have to be a good follower.
07:02I follow Jesus. So he's the greatest leader of all time. And everything I've learned, you know,
07:06about him and through reading the Bible and whatnot, he's, he's the greatest leader ever.
07:10And, you know, he's stern when he needed to be, but he's, you know, the greatest encourager of all
07:14time. That's, that's where I get my stuff from, man. That's awesome, man. That's, that's, that's great.
07:18I, I want to know, what do you do in adversity though? I love adversity. Tell me.
07:22The amount of adversity I've been through. I mean, you're playing Georgia right here. Everybody can't
07:26wait for this game. I'm sitting in a hotel room, man. You're all over the place, man. I watch this. Hey,
07:30I'm all over the place, making TikToks, opening boxes, man. But when you guys, when you guys are
07:35getting this adversity at home, how did you handle that? Like in the meetings the next day,
07:41in the next week of practice? I got benched in this game. You know, it made, it made the year
07:44tough, but again, it's just the reality of the position. And I think that I, I'm glad, I mean,
07:49looking back, I mean, I'm not glad that it happened in the moment, but man, I'm glad that I had to go
07:53through it. There's going to be big names all around us in this league, especially in this quarterback
07:57room that wherever I go. So I'm not going to sit here and lie like it's sunshine and rainbows,
08:02man. That was tough. It was tough. You're a freaking road warrior, aren't you?
08:05Hold on. All the longhorns are road warriors. You know, I used to love going on the road
08:08and beating somebody's ass and just seeing all the fans get in their car and leave.
08:13I love that. Don't you? I do too, man. It's my favorite thing in the world. I love,
08:16I love, we don't lose away game. We lost one away game. Let's go back to Michigan. What are these
08:21guys doing with these chairs? You remember? No clue. Wasn't worried about it. You remember this day,
08:24like yesterday? Oh, I remember this day. Yeah. Just make a note about the red zone. Let's just
08:29circle the red zone. I learned a lot of football study in Texas about your red zone offense. And
08:34against Michigan, I thought you guys were at your best. This first touchdown, I think you threw it
08:38off of a reset. You found your tight end. Do you remember this play? Yeah. Yeah. We were yakking the
08:45dice right. Get up there, will you? Will you get up there? Because I call this, it's a cover two
08:50beater, isn't it? Yeah. Two high beater, cover two beater. Yeah. Show me what you're doing here.
08:55Just the final formation, maybe how you read the play. Yeah. You like being on the board? Yeah,
09:00yeah, yeah. Good, because you're going to be up there all day today. The play doesn't start with
09:04the tight end. So we got the power to the right and then booms to the left. Well, as long as you peek
09:09that corner route, hold that backside safety, you know you're in business, don't you? Yeah. Oh yeah. It's
09:14money. If it's what we get right here, this is the ideal coverage. You're working with Christensen down
09:18there in Dallas with your releases, your footwork, all that stuff. Yeah. You got to take pride in your
09:24ability to get it out quick and from awkward deliveries, right? Yeah. Grab that ball right
09:29there, will you? That football stand up? Oh, the old Barstow sports ball. Yeah, just stand up. How do you
09:33throw the football? Like give me two or three pointers. I've always had the ability to throw a
09:38good ball and a lot of it's in my wrist and I think that's how I'm able to get all those different arm
09:42angles going. You know, I grew up playing baseball, which was big for me, but as long as I get a quick,
09:47late tap on the ball to speed everything up, and as long as I get that front foot down quick and I
09:51put this down, this right foot down with urgency right here, real quick after I throw the ball,
09:55I know it's going to be a good ball. It's awesome, man. Yeah, it's all really down here. As long as
10:00I'm snapping that wrist, I'm good. You want to snap a few today out there? We're going to snap a few.
10:05Who is this guy anyway? Oh, that's my guy, Matthew McConaughey, man. He's a legend. I mean,
10:10I see him in movies. He's on all the commercials and I turn you guys on. He's on the field,
10:15talking shit to the Michigan right here, isn't he? Oh, bro. Yeah, he's a legend. Look at him,
10:18man. Is he calling plays? He's calling plays, yeah. Is he putting plays in? He's putting plays in,
10:23man. You guys spend a lot of time together. Oh, man. We've done a couple things together. He's a
10:28really good dude, though. He's fun to be around. Oh, you got to tell us something about it. I mean,
10:31I want to know, what's he talking to you about? What are you guys doing? Oh, man. I mean,
10:35we did a Dick's Sporting Goods commercial together. I'm surprised you don't have this up on here,
10:39man. I was on David Letterman. He was on there. That's where I met him years ago,
10:43after we won the Super Bowl. He was an up and coming rock star. What did he say to you?
10:47I love his voice. But he'll pull us aside. Yeah. That's what happens. All right. All right. All
10:55right. You tell Grudog said hello, man. I'll tell him. Look at him, man. He's always down there.
10:59I'll tell him. Alabama, I put it down, you know. Gains of 31, 32, 34. Look at that. Six plays of over 30
11:08yards. You shredded Alabama. Yeah, that's a cool stat right there, man. Really is. What was,
11:13your recollection of that game? We lit their ass up. Beat them by double digits first time
11:18in, what, 20 years? Yeah. We were getting after him. When you played Alabama, man,
11:23look at these compressed formations. I fell out of my chair when I saw this play. I'm like,
11:27that son of a bitch is flying at warp speed, man. Yeah, he's moving, man. What's your target?
11:32What's your landing spot for these throws? It would have been back pylon here. So I knew if I put it
11:37down that zone, I'd be, I'd be good. And he could go run under it. And I knew if I put air under it,
11:42I mean, it's really put it on green grass, let this guy go run to the ball.
11:45As soon as you saw that safety jump your ex, you knew you had this.
11:47Oh, yeah. I was like, man, just throw it up. Let him go get it right in front of McConaughey and
11:51McAfee and all those guys. You know, the victory play here in Tuscaloosa, very few guys go to Michigan
11:58and Alabama and get a win. What was that plane trip home like? Oh, it was the best, man. Yeah? It was the best.
12:03I was playing Sweet Home Alabama on the drive home, Dixie Wonderland on the ride home. Yeah.
12:08I mean, just being able to go out of that game and experience what we experienced. I mean,
12:14it was a turning point for the Longhorns. There's no doubt in your mind you can be a
12:18great quarterback, is there? No doubt, man. I'm going to be, no doubt. 2023, just a couple more big
12:24games, the Big 12 championship. Now, Oklahoma State, they beat you guys in 2022. This is that
12:30revenge tour. Yeah, this is a revenge game and talk to me about this performance because you
12:35guys lit them up pretty good. Yeah, I think this is probably one of my best games I've ever had as
12:39a college quarterback. I have to ask you about this. What's it called? I don't remember the formation
12:45or anything. I don't care about the formation. What's the play? It was a wide corner for us.
12:49Spider 2Y banana, man. That's what it is. It's eye left closed, spider 2Y banana. Yeah,
12:55that's a good one. I'm glad we got this big guy in the end zone. He's a good player.
12:58Last one, Clebson. I really, this was one of my favorite games because you're playing against
13:05Cade Klubnick. Now, didn't Cade Klubnick play at Westlake High School? Yeah, he did.
13:10And didn't you guys play in the state championship game? We did. And who won that?
13:15That pissed you off. You really wanted this one, didn't you? Yeah, I wanted this one. Are you kidding
13:18me? Did you guys talk before the game, you and Cade Klubnick? I don't believe so. I'm going to be
13:23real aggressive with the red zone fringe. We get just outside the red zone, the 22, the 26,
13:29the 33-yard line. I call it the red fringe. You guys were aggressive, I think, you know,
13:34right around the fringe. You found your tight end again for a big one early. Was this the same play
13:40against Michigan? No, it wasn't. No, this is different. What the hell is the safety doing for
13:44Clemson? Did you see him flat-footed there? That's my guy. We went to high school. He went to
13:48South Lake Carroll. What the hell is he doing? Reading your eyes or something? I was talking to
13:52him. He's, they're playing like some three buzz here. So he went responsible for back there. But
13:56this is a play to really beat almost a too high look. Because the tight end is supposed to cross
14:01the safety's face. That's how we teach this. But obviously, he's not a robot. And we don't run
14:05drawings at the University of Texas. Good. So I saw my guy RJ here just looking at me. I'm like,
14:11I'm going to put it right over his dome. And it's a touchdown, man. That's freaking awesome,
14:14man. Somebody makes a mistake. You got to make them pay. You got to capitalize. You got to see
14:19the field. And like you said, let's not have chalkboard route runners. Yeah. You know,
14:24I want you to run around like this. You know, you see a coverage breakdown. Sometimes you got to throw
14:29your hand up and make a play, right? That's right. I want to go to this. This was the most exciting
14:33part of this game because, I mean, you're audible into this running play and you freaking gash them.
14:38Was this you doing this? Is this coming from the sideline? Because it's clearly an audible.
14:43Yeah. No, it was a game plan thing. We knew going into the week that we were going to run to the left
14:47here, you know, an open side run. But obviously, we don't have numbers that way. So it's pretty
14:51obvious that I need to check it the other way. We call this 98 force. That's the name of it if we
14:57come out of the huddle. Every time we audible, we don't use digits. We use East and West Coast terms
15:04to tell us where to run. So it might be Boston or New York. We're going where?
15:08Yeah, we're going right. L.A. or Vegas. We're going left. So our directions
15:13are cities today. We also have to code all of our top runs. So force, we use Star Wars, you know,
15:21because force is with you. Use the force, man. So if you're with me today, make a note of Star Wars,
15:27New York. Star Wars, L.A. Star Wars. Now, here's one for you today. Draw it up on your sheet here.
15:34Bunch right. We're going to call this 58 protection. 58 is our max pro. The tight end
15:39blocks. The back comes across and helps the tight end. You with me? Now, if you want to use a term
15:45instead of saying 58, you could say rock, rock, rock. So all you got to say is rock, rock, rock,
15:50if you want to audible and use that protection. You with me? Yeah. If the tight ends on the left and
15:55it's 59 protection. Hey, lava, lava, lava. You with it? But here's one you're going to get in the NFL.
16:01It's bunch right. You got the Y, the F, and the Z. I call it bunch right. You with me?
16:05Gotcha. 58 protection keeps the tight end in and the back comes across to secure that C gap.
16:11He might take the strong safety blitzer. You got me? Got it. 58 and we're calling this snag
16:18cross. You got me? Yeah. The Z is going to run a wide departure
16:23inline basic. So really you can progress this one, two, and three. Okay. You like it or love it?
16:28I love this one. We call this ice for us. We had this. It was similar.
16:32What's your thinking in end of game situations? Because you had a lot of them, man. Yeah, we did.
16:37I mean, we got the ball. We're behind. We're tied. Crunch time. We got to score.
16:43We're going to Arizona State. Well, what am I talking about here? The play of the year to me
16:47in college football. I'm in an airport, man. I'm like pissed because you guys lost to Arizona State.
16:52I couldn't believe it. Yeah, no. That was a hell of a win for Arizona State. I couldn't believe it.
16:55I was going to call Dillingham. So that's the greatest win in the history of Arizona State.
16:58It's fourth and 13. I hear all this screaming and shit. Couldn't let it happen, man. Look at that.
17:03But did you rock the protection? Yeah. Yeah. What the hell happened here? Yeah. So they were going
17:08to a triple-A Fonzie Blitz and I rippied the protection, which is a seven-man protection,
17:13protected me up, stopped the receiver, protected me up, and then allowed myself to go make a play.
17:18My line did a really good job of knowing what was coming since I made the rippy call.
17:23So the huddle call was what route? I left the routes on. All the routes were what was called.
17:28And all I did was change the protection. The tight end, he's supposed to be into the flat,
17:33right? Yeah. But you kept them in because you see the all-out blitz. Yeah. And you know that your
17:39guy here has a post route, right? He's supposed to sell an out route and then take it more vertical.
17:44But, you know, obviously he sees my check and kind of sees that I need to hurry it up a little bit.
17:48So give it to me at the line of scrimmage. Just stand up. Be in the shotgun like I'm Arizona State.
17:53Okay. You're Arizona State? You're the safety coming up here?
17:55I'm Arizona State. I'm coming with an all-out blitz. Okay.
17:58It's fourth and 13. Your season is over, Matt.
18:01So I'm motioning him in. Oh, shit. Hey, hold up. Hold up. Hold up. Hey, rippy, rippy, rippy, rippy.
18:05Center makes the check. Center makes the check. And then I'm like, ready.
18:10And then I knew I drift a little bit because the pressure's coming right here.
18:12And then all I got to do is give my guy a chance to go make a play.
18:16It's one of the greatest plays in college football in the last couple of years, man.
18:19It was an end-of-game situation, man. Have an audible ready at crunch time.
18:23If you don't, you're adult. You know what adult is?
18:26I had Chris Sims. Remember Chris Sims? Yeah.
18:28Where'd he go to college? He went to Texas, man.
18:30He was on my team. I said, Chris, don't be adult. Finally, he goes, what's adult?
18:35I said, why don't you look it up in the dictionary?
18:37He comes back in. He goes, hey, man, I looked up dolt. It's a stupid fellow.
18:42All right, crunch time. You don't have an audible ready. You're a freaking what?
18:46Yeah, you're a dolt. You're a dolt.
18:48I want to know who every defensive coordinator is in the NFL. You understand?
18:52Yeah. And I want you to take this. It's a manila folder.
18:55So once you decide who the defensive coordinator of the New York Jets is,
19:00you write his name right there and you start compiling notes.
19:04About him? Yeah. You got to think like this.
19:07All right. Who is this guy? This guy here, he's one of the biggest pain in the asses to go against
19:12for quarterbacks. If I had all the top quarterbacks in here and I said, what do you know about this
19:16guy? They'd go, holy shit. So take that manila folder, write Todd Bowles name on that.
19:22And what you're going to do is you're going to start studying or getting information from somebody
19:27on your staff about Todd Bowles. And you're going to put it in your filing cabinet at home.
19:32But you got to start knowing who these guys are and what they do on defense.
19:37Peyton Manning, when he lived in Indianapolis playing for the Colts, when the combine was there,
19:42you know what he did? He picked up the defensive coordinators at the airport, took them out for
19:47beers, took them out for chicken wings, and he peppered them with questions.
19:51He's interrogating them, man, trying to learn about their shit. They're going to defend you.
19:56These coaches are going to defend you differently because you're a drop back pastor.
20:01You think Vic Fangio is going to defend Quinn Ewers like he defended Michael Vick?
20:05Nah. No way.
20:06You're going to get a totally different game plan. Does that make sense?
20:10Yep.
20:10All right? This is where we are, yes? And this is what you want to do?
20:15Yep.
20:15Okay. So to do that, what are the keys of being a great pocket passer? Tell me.
20:20I mean, number one, you know, having footwork aligned with the route concepts.
20:23And I want to know why you're changing your footwork. I mean,
20:25you've been at Sonny Detmers passing camp when you were in the third grade. I know that.
20:32How do you know that?
20:32I know the Detmers. I know everything. I know everything about quarterbacks, man.
20:36I got friends, you know.
20:37That's a throwback, man.
20:38Well, why would you change your feet when you've had this much success? You got a great arm,
20:43you got great arm talent, you make exceptional throws. I mean, some of this shit right here,
20:48that is as good as I will ever see. That is phenomenal. Why are you changing your feet?
20:56My heart is broken.
20:57Really?
20:58Yeah. Why are you?
20:59I think it's going to help my accuracy.
21:01Stand up there.
21:02In the long run.
21:02Your shotgun, you've had your left foot back since the third grade.
21:06Take a three-step drop with your left foot back. Show me how you run.
21:09So back to the original.
21:10Yes, original. So I'd be right here. One, two, three.
21:14And you've done that since you were six.
21:16I was a kid.
21:17Okay, now you're going to put your right foot back. What happens with that drop?
21:21Yeah, so right foot back. Let's go.
21:24What's that, four? What do you call that?
21:26Yeah, four. Yeah, four, three, four.
21:29Why would you change something that's that good at this point, right before your rookie year in the NFL?
21:33I mean, I've just been getting word and people have been telling me that that's how it gets coached in the league.
21:39So I've been working on it. I'm versatile though. I'll do whatever.
21:43I mean, I've got a lot of work with left foot back and I'm getting some work with right foot back.
21:46Just remember this, man. We ain't going to be no bobblehead quarterback. What's a bobblehead quarterback?
21:51Hey, Quinn. Hey, Quinn, come here. Hey, try this play. Hey, Quinn, try this protection. Hey, Quinn, put this foot back. Hey, Quinn.
21:59What do you got to say every once in a while? Hey, hey. Whoa. No, I don't want to do that. I don't like that play.
22:04I don't understand that protection. I don't like that footwork. That's that's legal. You know what I mean?
22:10Yeah. OK, you've been pretty well coached your whole life. That's right.
22:14And, you know, I'm just I'm not here to tell you that what to do. I'm just challenging you.
22:18Make sure you don't become a bobblehead. Make a note. Let's not abuse the arm, man.
22:23You know, let's not abuse it. Don't abuse it. I mean, it's really going to piss me off if you abuse the arm.
22:28What are you doing right here against Wyoming? Tell me. Yeah. So, again, another little fake screen here.
22:33Well, you don't need you don't need to throw this in there because you can. You know what Brett Favre said to me?
22:38What did he say? We threw a hole shot against cover to against Cincinnati for a touchdown.
22:43And I'm like the checkdown is wide open over the ball. So why? Why did you throw that?
22:48He goes, because I can. You know what I mean? Don't abuse it. Don't abuse. You might get somebody.
22:54You could get somebody killed. I want to go into the Texas play action part of your offense.
22:59What's this protectionist trap pass where you pull the guard? Yeah, this is dagger.
23:04Get up there. Show me that. Split backfield set. I called it rocket backs. You got two halfbacks.
23:09Take me through your progression, the depth of the tight end, and when you throw it and when you come off of it to get to number two like you are here.
23:17Like you said, we're faking backside. So this would have been a personal protector. So the H blimp.
23:21So we got a low cross right here. And you got a little spray dig depending on his alignment.
23:25And then you got three down low. So, I mean, I'm here. I'm setting my feet right to the Y.
23:31Because if he's there, we're taking him right away. And I love this play because I can go one here and I'm right to the Z, three to the running back.
23:38Easy read for me, man. So this was one of my favorite plays that we ran.
23:42This is a favorite play that you guys run. I call it the sneak route.
23:46You use some kind of crazy play action in the tight end. He just comes like he's running a shallow cross and he sneaks down the far sideline.
23:54What do you call this play?
23:55Yeah, it's similar. It was similar. Why sneak? Like you said, we run it in big moments, man.
24:01The vast majority of your big plays are off some kind of shot play action, right?
24:07Yeah.
24:07What would this huddle call be against Arizona State?
24:10Yeah, so we would have been in trips right. Just why sneak? And kind of everybody else knew what to do.
24:14We knew we got a post by this guy. He's got to collect two. He's got to take that corner and that safety.
24:19And then the running back knew he's got to get out right now to influence this guy in the flat.
24:23You know, obviously they were late, so we made them pay.
24:25Your movement, your ball faking is excellent. And your movement in the pocket, man.
24:31And these quick, active releases. Shit, man. I love it. I love it.
24:36You like football?
24:37I love football.
24:38I'm going to move on. Let's go to the snap count right now. You like the snap count?
24:41Yeah.
24:42What is your snap count at Texas? Do you talk at all?
24:45Yeah, at Texas, I was just saying ready and then a clap.
24:49Stand up there. Let me see that. I'm the defense.
24:52So I'm just saying, here we go. Ready. And that's it.
24:56Really?
24:56Yeah, I got a good clap.
24:57You guys are all killing me with these clapping, man.
25:00What if the defense starts clapping? What if the fans are clapping?
25:04Defense claps as a flag.
25:05We're done clapping.
25:06We're done.
25:07We're going to go today on a quick count. We're going to go on one, and we're going to go on a hard two.
25:12The first thing I want you to do is write down R-C-E. I'm going to come back to this 30 times.
25:19R-C-E stands for recognition, and then it's communication, and then it's execution.
25:26And that's what we're doing on every snap.
25:27Those are the only multi-syllable words I ever used in my life.
25:32You got to recognize the defense.
25:35And I'm convinced when you recognize the defense, you're going to have a toolbox of things to communicate, right?
25:43And that's going to lead us to freaking high levels of execution.
25:46That's right.
25:47I mean, that's the way it's going to be now.
25:48So our count today, set up, nice and easy to let everybody know we're starting this process.
25:53It's going to be color number, color number, and it's set-hut again.
25:58Set-hut.
25:58Hey, blue 85.
26:01Blue 85, set-hut.
26:03You got me?
26:04Yeah.
26:04Stand up here.
26:05Put your hands under the center.
26:06We're underneath the center, man.
26:08All right, set-hut.
26:10Blue 85.
26:12Blue 85, set-hut.
26:14I love it.
26:14Perfect.
26:15You're perfect.
26:15All right, set-hut.
26:16Yep.
26:16If we go on a quick count, we're just going to put our hands on it.
26:19Set-hut.
26:20We're gone.
26:20Set-hut.
26:21Two syllables, one word.
26:22You guys, I felt that country draw right there, man.
26:25Was it a little bit?
26:26I love it.
26:27I mean, your snap count, when the owner comes out to practice, when all these sweet holders
26:32come out to practice, everybody's going to go, hey, there's Quinn Ewers.
26:36He's a first-round draft choice.
26:37You get up there, you freaking let them know your snap count.
26:40You got great command of everything.
26:42You got me?
26:43Yep.
26:43All right?
26:44If we're going to go on a hard count, you want the defense to hear it.
26:48Hey, set-hut.
26:49Blue 85.
26:50Blue 85.
26:52Blue 85.
26:53Set-hut.
26:54Hunt.
26:54You got me?
26:55Have some fun with it, man.
26:57Have a little creativity.
26:58Set-hut.
27:00Blue 85.
27:02Blue 85.
27:03Set-hut.
27:03Hunt.
27:04Perfect.
27:04You got it.
27:05So we'll go on a quick count.
27:06We'll go on one, and we'll go on a hard two.
27:08Knock on wood if you're with me.
27:09You good on that?
27:10Knock on wood, baby.
27:11Now, any time you audible or change the play, Silva, Silva.
27:17Al Davis used to say to Silva in black.
27:19If you change the play, let's say you go like this.
27:22Hey, set-hut.
27:23Blue 85.
27:24Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
27:26Let's go Star Wars New York.
27:29Star Wars New York.
27:32Silva, Silva, set-hut.
27:34You feel me?
27:34Yeah.
27:35And off of that second Silva, we roll right into the?
27:38So it's set-hut right after the second one.
27:40Okay, so let me see an audible to Star Wars New York.
27:43Go ahead.
27:44Set-hut.
27:45Blue 85.
27:46Hey, easy, easy, easy.
27:47Star Wars L.A.
27:49Star Wars L.A.
27:50Silva.
27:51Silva, set-hut.
27:52Good.
27:52Now, we have a thing in our offense called Freddy.
27:55You got to know what that is today.
27:57Write it down, Freddy.
27:58Freddy means we're going fast.
27:59We're not huddling.
28:01Our communication's got to get way better.
28:03See how I'm talking with my mouth moving?
28:05I call it loam.
28:07L-O-M-M.
28:08Write it down.
28:09L-O-M-M.
28:10Large, open, moving mouth.
28:12You're not Quinn.
28:13You're from Texas.
28:14You're, you're.
28:14Hey, man.
28:15You are Quinn freaking yours from the University of Texas.
28:20You understand?
28:21One of the reasons why Colt McCoy's driving around with these fancy cars and owns all his property,
28:26that son of a bitch is a great communicator.
28:28I want my big guys.
28:29I'm paying these guys a lot of money to protect you and knock people's dick in the dirt.
28:34I want them coming off the ball.
28:36You like this or love it?
28:37I love it.
28:37Sorry for getting excited.
28:39I get excited.
28:39You know, I get excited.
28:40Now, what's a dummy count?
28:42So, if we're in a no-huddle offense and you want to use a dummy snap count,
28:46will you start using these names?
28:48Hey, Freddy, Freddy, Snug Right.
28:50Snug Right.
28:52Benjamin Franklin.
28:53Snug Right.
28:54Albert Einstein.
28:55That lets everybody know you're going to research and pick a play.
28:57Does that make sense to you?
28:58Yeah.
28:58Now, here's your first play you're getting today in your Freddy.
29:0298 Blistex.
29:04That's the name of your play today.
29:06I love that.
29:06You with me?
29:07Yeah.
29:07You're faking this thing from under the center.
29:10It's a wide zone with a wide sift.
29:13You with me?
29:13Yes, sir.
29:14We're running a little strike route with our X.
29:17You've run this before, right?
29:18Yep.
29:19The Z, he's in a cut split just like the X.
29:22He's running a streak.
29:23Stand up.
29:25Let's see how you sound.
29:26You got the headset on?
29:27Hey, hey, hey, hey.
29:29Hey, Quinn, let's go Freddy.
29:30Let's go Freddy.
29:31Hey, Freddy, Freddy, Freddy.
29:32Snug Right.
29:32Snug Right.
29:3398 Blistex.
29:34Let's go.
29:34Here we go.
29:35Snug Right.
29:35Snug Right.
29:3698 Blistex.
29:37Here we go.
29:37We're going.
29:37We're going.
29:39Silver, silver.
29:39It's hot.
29:40Now you got it.
29:41How do you like it?
29:41Run the strike.
29:42How do you like it?
29:43I love it.
29:43Now, anytime I say zebra, it's a receiver that's off the ball, and he's going to fly.
29:50But it's the illusion of sophistication.
29:53It's just 98 Blistex, but we're changing speeds.
29:57You're like, hey, man, I'm Quinn Ewers out of Texas.
30:00No, I'm not.
30:01I'm Quinn Ewers out of Texas.
30:02We're going.
30:03We slow it down.
30:04Speed it up.
30:04We keep people really uncomfortable.
30:05Yeah.
30:06You love it or like it?
30:07I love it.
30:07All right.
30:08Sorry for getting excited.
30:09What's RCE?
30:10Recognition, communication, execution.
30:12Right on, man.
30:13The R phase, you got to recognize the situation.
30:17You got to recognize the front.
30:21Recognize the freaking coverage.
30:23And recognize the matchup.
30:25Right?
30:25Yeah.
30:26If I got Antonio Brown, which I tried to get, and I got him over there, I told Derek,
30:31I said, if he's over there against these three corners, light him up.
30:35Rip him.
30:36Throw him the ball.
30:37It was only there a week, so it was unfortunate.
30:40But that's what I was thinking.
30:42Now, here's the thing I say to you, and this is what I want to do with you today,
30:46whether you like it or not.
30:47You and I are working together, so we're going to have some fun together.
30:51I got a million, you know, pretty cool formations, but this one's called Snug.
30:56Are you with me?
30:56Got you.
30:57So you better know the Z and the Y, they travel together in our S series,
31:02and the F and the X go together.
31:03This is Snug Right.
31:05Got you.
31:05All right.
31:06Now, if I ever call Snug Right Shorty, the Y would go in short motion to get the Snug Right.
31:12Snug Right Shorty.
31:13And that will tell you before the ball is snapped if it's man or zone.
31:16If the safety's out there, what coverage is it?
31:18It's man.
31:18If it's a corner out there, what is it?
31:20Zone.
31:20I could say, hey, Snug Right Shorty, Bill Gates.
31:24What's that mean?
31:25It's a dummy.
31:26It's a dummy count.
31:27But we look like we're running a play.
31:29While you're talking, you're listening to their calls.
31:32We're reading if it's a blitz or not.
31:34You're using dummy words.
31:36You're having fun.
31:37You're researching the defense.
31:39If you get a blitz, I want to get the 200 or 300 Jet Omaha.
31:44200 Jet, the bat goes to the right.
31:46300 Jet, the bat goes to the left.
31:48It's a universal NFL protection.
31:50If you know it's man-to-man, are you with me?
31:53Yeah.
31:53We're going to get the 82 Cowboy.
31:5682, the bat free releases to the right.
31:5983, he free releases to the left if you were in a snug left.
32:03You with me?
32:03Yes, sir.
32:04And if we pick that linebacker with all these crossers, I want him to get the ball.
32:09If we don't like it, we got the mesh cross right here for number two.
32:12The only time I want this play, though, is when it's man-to-man.
32:15Listen, we can go 200 Jet Omaha if you get a blitz.
32:19But with Quinn Ewers here, I want to take a shot at these sumbitches.
32:25So I want to rock the protection.
32:28Are you with me?
32:28Yep.
32:29And I just want to go, hey, rock, rock, rock.
32:31Rage.
32:32Rage.
32:33In a rage route, this guy's running a 15-yard route, sells the corner, and he's going back
32:40to the post.
32:40And he's at warp speed.
32:42And the Z runs one of them Texas deep crosses.
32:45And the F is bumping, and he's in the flat.
32:47Three-level cut.
32:49The last two plays, this one is called 72 Bob.
32:55It stood for Z bench, X bow.
32:59This was a bow.
33:00Guy ran a straight stem arrow, we called it.
33:03A little pivot.
33:04And on eye contact, he can slide outside.
33:06You with me, Quinn?
33:07Yep.
33:08This is a bench.
33:09We got a 20-yard, 18- to 20-yard bench route.
33:13This tight end will rib the defensive end.
33:15He'll be in the flat.
33:16But it's really pure progression.
33:18Take a look over here and work back to your bow.
33:21You got me?
33:21Yep.
33:22You like the play?
33:22That's a good one.
33:23I love it.
33:23Yeah.
33:24I know you've run all these plays.
33:25Now, if we have a tight end that is really good, I got to be able to run a wide choice.
33:31I call it 72 Yahoo.
33:34I want this Z over here, outside release, and run a 20-yard bench.
33:40That's what I'm looking for.
33:41The Y, he just kind of skips off, and he runs a choice route about five yards deep.
33:47He can sit down right now versus zone.
33:50He can break out, and he can take it if he gets a premier look.
33:53I want you to set up three and a hitch and throw him the ball every time.
33:57You just got to be ready if that corner in a cloud gets a little nose trouble.
34:02You might have to sink on your back foot and lob that ball out there.
34:05You with me?
34:05Love that.
34:06But on the back side, we have what we call a stucco.
34:10This is a stick return, and that'll be your complimentary throw there.
34:14You with me?
34:15Yep.
34:15In the back, he's going to check his assignment, chip that defensive end.
34:20He's going wide.
34:21He'll be a little outlet for you.
34:23You might have to throw him the ball.
34:24You got me?
34:24Yep.
34:25This cat right here, he runs a spray out route, 10 to 12 yards, and this is a yes, no.
34:33If you get like a late three-deep rotation, he's got free access.
34:37You can just throw it right now, take the game.
34:39You're going to take it.
34:39But this is pure progression.
34:41I'd like to throw this guy the ball right here.
34:44I go through a lot of pens.
34:46I'd like to throw this guy the ball.
34:47Number one, number two, number three.
34:51Hey, let's go.
34:51Hey, Glenn.
34:52Let's go, Freddie.
34:53Let's go, Freddie.
34:53Hey, Freddie, Freddie, Freddie.
34:54Hey, Snug Right Shorty, use a dummy count.
34:56Hey, Snug Right Shorty, Snug Right Shorty.
34:59Hey, Bill Gates, Bill Gates.
35:01Is it hot?
35:02Blue, 85.
35:04Blue, 85.
35:05It's hot.
35:05It's cover three, it's cover three.
35:06Hey, easy, easy, easy.
35:07Here we got 72 Bob, 72 Bob.
35:11Silva, Silva, it's hot.
35:12Good, do it again.
35:13Let's go, Freddie again.
35:14Snug Right Shorty, let's go.
35:15Hey, Snug Right Shorty, Freddie, Freddie, Freddie.
35:17Let him know it's Bill Gates.
35:17Hey, Donald Trump, Donald Trump.
35:19There you go.
35:19Blue, 85.
35:21Blue, 85.
35:22It's hot.
35:22It's man-to-man.
35:22Easy, 82 Cowboy.
35:2482 Cowboy, Silva, Silva, it's hot.
35:26Good.
35:26Okay, one more time.
35:27Snug Right Shorty, let's go.
35:28Dummy count.
35:29Hey, hey, Snug Right Shorty, Freddie, Freddie.
35:30Snug Right Shorty, Donald Trump.
35:32Donald Trump, here we go.
35:33It's hot.
35:33Blue, 85.
35:35Blue, 85.
35:36It's hot.
35:36It's cover two.
35:37Hey, easy, easy.
35:3872 Yahoo.
35:3972 Yahoo.
