00:00And I think a lot of people actually found out about Barstool Sports through that because we were, again, we were ahead of everybody.
00:08We were literally reporting things, be like gunfire in the streets in Watertown on a specific street.
00:15And like 20 minutes later, the news would report it. It's like we're already on to the next.
00:20We had footage that nobody else had. We were on like CNN news or on global news of the actual gunfight
00:27because it was being done outside of Stooley's fucking bedroom window.
00:32Oh my God, something blew up. Something blew up. Oh my God, something happened.
00:37Yeah, I mean, nobody knew what was going on, obviously.
00:40I want all the SWAT teams to go back to the base right now and get their rifles, get their gear.
00:46I mean, obviously, it's your hometown, so you know a lot of people. It was just crazy. The whole thing was crazy.
00:50We don't need more evidence there. We need some more evidence.
00:54Nobody knew what happened. I mean, people knew what happened, but nobody knew what happened.
00:59It was just pretty much chaos.
01:01It was very loud. The ground shook. You could just feel it going down through you.
01:06It was more like this was very real, like something major happened.
01:09I saw one guy with his legs gone at the knees, some ankles and feet missing,
01:14shrapnel wounds on people on the sides of the head.
01:16It was just surreal.
01:17We still do not know who did this or why, and people shouldn't jump to conclusions before we have
01:34all the facts. But make no mistake, we will get to the bottom of this, and we will find out who did
01:41this. We will find out why they did this.
01:43Well, you started getting more info on it, and obviously it was nuts.
01:48Start seeing the footage roll in, start seeing the pictures, and it was just crazy.
01:56Something just blew up.
01:57Run! Run! Go!
02:05Right now, you're looking at live footage at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.
02:10There was some sort of explosion.
02:11Hey! There's got to be people coming up!
02:15The comedy was gone. We were covering it as best we could, updating people with pictures,
02:26things we were hearing, events. So we were just making sure the pictures were real, what we knew
02:32we were putting out there was real. We were covering it as something that hit very close
02:37to home, and getting information out the best we could.
02:39We're interrupting your program because there have been two explosions today at the Boston Marathon.
02:44Two explosions near the finish line just a short while ago. You see the scene right there.
02:49Explosions right by the finish line. The winners had passed several hours before.
02:54Some stragglers were coming by, but several people on the scene are said to be injured in Boston today.
03:00Of course, the Boston Marathon, one of the premier sporting events in the country.
03:04We were covering it as give information that if you were home, you'd want access to.
03:09Like, what's happening? What are the reports? How many people were injured?
03:13Who did it? What? All of it. It wasn't premeditated. It wasn't anymore, I don't think.
03:23Hitting home because I'm from Boston, we're there. We just had access to more information
03:27because we're a Boston company, so a bazillion of our fans were at this event, following this event,
03:33watching it, access to people involved. So we just were accumulating a ton of information.
03:39A guy named Dave Portnoy who runs a site called Barstool. Now, Barstool is a site you can like it, not like it.
03:45It makes me laugh pretty much every day because I'm sophomoric in my humor, I suppose.
03:50But his site is Boston-centric. He's a Boston guy. And here's a guy who's not in the news-breaking business,
03:56but he's got a police scanner on in Boston, and he's just tweet after tweet after tweet.
04:00The pictures came out first of the two suspects, and so everyone's kind of on the edge because they're
04:08out loose, and on the loose, you didn't know what was happening next. Somebody sent me a police scanner
04:14to listen to, and it was around MIT. Something very odd was going on on the police scanner,
04:21and I don't know why they sent it to me. I don't know why I was listening to it in real time, but I was.
04:25I listened on the police scanners. Dan joined in on it, and we were just tweeting
04:55what we'd hear.
04:56So the Barstool manhunt, funny enough, that was actually the week that I went full-time.
05:04Dave wore me down. He asked me to go full-time in September. I said, no. He asked me to go full-time
05:09in December. I said, no. I think he asked me again in February. I said, okay. I picked a date
05:14where I gave my two weeks notice to my job. If I had been working my old job, I wouldn't have been
05:20able to manhunt, but it happened to be that was the first time that I was working from home. I think
05:26I was in bed, and I was scrolling Twitter, and I saw this, and I'm a huge cops fan, dog to bounty
05:32hunter, police. I've been on police scanners before. I love police scanners. People were sending us
05:38scanners to listen to, and I just got up, and I listened to the scanner and reported as it went down.
05:45I think I gained, like, 20,000 followers in basically 24 hours, which is a ton for that
05:50early of Twitter. Stayed up for 24 hours straight. It started last night at 10 o'clock. I got on the
05:59scanner when the first thing happened, like MIT, that was totally unrelated, and then I just got
06:05addicted to the scanner, and I have not left my chair since. Let's talk about these scanners for a
06:12second. The fact that these scanners are even in existence and possible, and that the whole
06:18fucking world knows what the police are doing right now is kind of fucking scary, no? When has
06:22this ever happened? Like, you could just listen on a scanner. You could do it all the time. Really?
06:28So here's my thing. I think I might secretly be addicted to the scanner, and this might be my new
06:33thing. Like, I might just be doing scanners now. You know, it's not a funny situation, but I think we
06:42covered it in a way that's just so unique to Barstool that we were able to be serious, but also,
06:48you know, crack some jokes to kind of lighten the mood for people. One of the best parts of this is
06:53Dave, like, getting hands on, like, him wrestling and, like, basically just hammering him for being a bad
07:02wrestler. Like, hashtagging this kid Gleason who beat him twice in the state tournament or something.
07:09That's so perfect. Dave tweets about him like he's a famous person. Is he what I should know?
07:16Gleason's kid beat him in the winner's bracket and the loser's bracket. He was like, how tough can he be?
07:22Gleason beat him twice. They got a picture of Gleason, and Gleason's like, they were wrestling at,
07:28like, 112 pounds or something. It was ridiculous. Dave had nosebleeds. Who, now, admittedly, like we
07:34said, he does get them pretty consistently. He does get nosebleeds a lot, but this one, given
07:41the circumstances, is, wow, probably the scariest of all time. He legitimately looks like he has, like,
07:48age or something. He's, like, sweating. The nosebleeds is a fun thing, but the hair and the grease and
07:53the shiny face, he looks like he's on Death Storm.
07:56It was from the opening seconds of the chase of the two terrorists that I was listening to it.
08:09Because we didn't know it was related to the terrorists at all. That's why I don't even know
08:13why I was listening to it in the first place. Whatever it was, I listened to on the police
08:18cannons. The opening seconds of when the brothers were found and being chased with the gunfire in
08:27Watertown, all the way through the entire manhunt. I mean, all the way through it.
08:32I feel like we have them. I just do.
08:35All right, take care. Keep plugging away over there.
08:39I've been up, yeah, 27 hours, and I honestly, at this point, I'm pot committed. Like, I can't stop
08:46if we don't find them. And we did a pretty good job, Dan and I, of being very serious,
08:52but mixing in some lighter moments. I mean, it was like an all-day thing. It was like 24, 30 hours.
08:57You know, occasionally we cracked jokes, and it was just a surreal 24 to 30 hours of manhunting
09:04terrorists. This guy pulled over a cab with three guys in it. The cop's name was Mike, and they're
09:10like, Mike, is this the suspect we're looking for? And as Mike's about to answer, it just went blank
09:15for, like, a solid, like, three minutes. And then when it came back, it was like nothing
09:19had happened. And it was just, Mike had dropped the ball so bad, and everyone was so pissed
09:24at Mike.
09:25They have explosives, some type of grenades. They're in between the houses down here.
09:30Drop the fire, drop the fire.
09:31Loud explosion, loud explosion, loud explosion.
09:37Short by foot.
09:38We had the terrorist being operated on on the table. We had him. Like, we had his image,
09:45we had what he looked like, the shape he was in, everything. It was sent by somebody who
09:50worked at the hospital to us, and it was as real as real gets. Still have never seen that
09:54photo published anywhere else. Like, the moments they caught him in the hospital. We just had
09:59so much information. We knew what was happening before anybody else.
10:02And I was like, okay. I took Stella out for a walk, because she literally was just sitting
10:07next to me for the entire time. Just like, dude, are you going to fucking leave this computer
10:12and this police scanner? So I took her for a walk, and while I'm on the walk, I'm scrolling
10:16Twitter, and boom, they got him.
10:18Sir, be advised, that subject is in custody. Again, he is in custody at this time.
10:22Great job. Good job, dispatchers.
10:25Dispatchers were awesome.
10:27So ZOD units, SWAT teams, all command staff, excellent job. Excellent job.
10:31Boston operations, 2056.
10:33General officers, prior to UCC, we have our second suspect of the Boston Marathon bombing in custody.
10:40Again, we have our second suspect in custody in Watertown.
10:44Courageousness and their tenacity in solving this vicious crime that occurred in that city.
10:50It's a proud day to be a Boston police officer. Thank you all.
10:54Thank you, Commissioner.
10:55And I remember after the whole thing, I had been up for, I don't know, 36, 40.
11:02It was actually, no, I was up for like 48 hours, wherever it may have been.
11:06I went to meet my friends at Declan's in Old Town, and I had two beers, and I was hammered
11:13because I was so tired and so out of it.
11:15But yeah, it was surreal.
11:17And I think a lot of people actually found out about Barstool Sports through that.
11:23Because we were, again, we were ahead of everybody.
11:26We were literally reporting things, be like gunfire in the streets in Watertown on a specific street.
11:33And like 20 minutes later, the news would report it.
11:36It's like we're already on to the next.
11:37We had footage that nobody else had.
11:41We were on like CNN news or on global news of the actual gunfight because it was being
11:46done outside of Stooley's fucking bedroom window.
11:49And that's the beauty of what we do.
11:52Like we just boiled it all down.
11:53We know when to be serious, but we also have a really good knack of how to crack a joke to
11:57lighten the mood, especially on the internet.
11:59We can refer, I think we're going to ask about it, so you can like pull it like, I would
12:03definitely get another one of those, too.
12:06You know, so.
12:08That's close.
12:09You know, that's.
12:13Yeah, that's bright.
12:15I just sat there, I was like, dude, I can't see anything.
12:17No.
12:18Is that still really bright?
12:19No, that's fine.
12:20I'll tolerate it.
12:20I'll deal with it.
12:21We requested email stories, and then Mark Fuccarelli, his sister, or was it his girlfriend,
12:27one or the other, sent him the story about his plight.
12:32You know, he was caught in that awful position of, do I cut my leg off and get an extra million
12:37dollars because every limb he loses is a million, or do I keep it and not get as much money?
12:42He needs to make all these renovations on his house.
12:44He was a North Shore guy.
12:46He was a barstool type guy.
12:48It was pretty obvious once we got more information that he was the right pick for us.
12:53They say, I am the last Boston Marathon victim to go home.
12:56But just because I'm going home today, by no means does that road for me over, I, like
13:06many other survivors, still have more surgeries and other procedures to go through.
13:09I went to the Boston Marathon with a group of friends to support a friend of ours that
13:13was running that day.
13:15He was a just retired military Marine.
13:17He was running an honors soldier that he had served with.
13:22And so we went to the marathon, witnessed the first bomb go off.
13:28And then 13 seconds later, the second bomb went off.
13:30It was right next to my right leg against a tree.
13:33What's the first thing I want to do when I get home?
13:36Just sit down because my foot's hurting.
13:38Just be with my boy.
13:42You know, I want to be with all my friends, all my family.
13:45I was severely, severely injured.
13:48Bleeding out.
13:49Went through numerous surgeries.
13:50Spent 55 days in Mass General Hospital.
13:54Hundreds of surgical procedures.
13:57High 40, 50 surgeries.
13:58After a year vending out of the Boston hospitals, I spent another year traveling, trying to
14:05find doctors to recreate, fix my left leg, trying to still salvage my left limb from the
14:11pain.
14:11You know, when I woke up in the hospital originally, I wanted my laptop to pay my bills, live check
14:18to check.
14:19Had a fiance that was just finished up nursing school, just started being a nurse.
14:24And I was in the process of getting my real estate license, and I needed to pay bills,
14:29so I requested my laptop when I was in the ICU.
14:33You know, my family told me, don't worry about it.
14:35There are people out there raising money and helping out, and you just need to worry about
14:39living and making it through the next couple days.
14:44Then I came home, and I got a phone call from Dave with Basketball Sports saying that,
14:51hey, you know, I got a check for you, I want to come give you if that's all right.
14:56Went, met with him, heard his story, it was surreal to hear his story.
15:00Like, he wasn't one of these guys like, oh, this is great, my life is going to be awesome.
15:04He was like, fucking my whole life fucked up over this thing.
15:07Right, like you knew, you knew what happened.
15:10I knew it was a bomb when the first one went off.
15:14We knew it was, something's going on, this is something bad.
15:18We just had that feeling, we saw a cloud of smoke and the debris, and it was a, boom,
15:23real quick, boom, looked.
15:24We all looked around each other and were like, that's not good.
15:26All of us were in a circle at this, looking at each other.
15:28So he's like, get in the street, get in the street.
15:30And that's where I ran towards the street.
15:33That's where the phone was, right on the edge of the street and sidewalk.
15:37So I ran right into it.
15:38You know, some of the more publicized victims were getting, you know, more money,
15:42and there were weird requirements on how people qualified.
15:47If you lost two limbs, you got X amount, three limbs, whatever.
15:50It was all over the map.
15:51And, you know, it was so central to what we were doing.
15:55I thought if we put shirts on sale and donated to one person individually who maybe needed
16:02more money or could use more money or wasn't getting it fast enough or somehow didn't qualify
16:07correctly for the one fund, we could make a difference at least in one person's life.
16:10So we asked for people who were affected to send us emails, stories.
16:16We wanted to help somebody we thought was a stoolie, somebody, you know, who would be one
16:20of us.
16:21So that is how we went about soliciting recommendations or who really needed help.
16:26The firefighter that came to me, and actually he was the first one to put a tourniquet on,
16:32he said I handed him my foot.
16:37So I had to set up and grab my foot.
16:39I don't recall it, but he said I handed it to him, like,
16:44that's not going to help me.
16:47Put it down.
16:47I said to him when he first came to me, I don't want to die.
16:50I have a son and a fiancé that I want, you know, and I want to make it back home to him.
16:57The guy said just stick with that, you know, so that the nurse, you just stay with that.
17:01Think about your fiancé, Mark.
17:02Think about your little boy.
17:03Think about your fiancé.
17:05And that literally is all I thought about.
17:07So we raised the money, $250,000, and presented him the check.
17:11Give me the check, and to be honest, we did nothing.
17:14I mean, we had the website, we had the phone, so it's all, you know, the readers who wanted
17:19to do what we're looking.
17:20I appreciate the readers.
17:21It's, you know, hopefully it helps with whatever you were saying.
17:27Are you kidding me?
17:28No, that's what we raised.
17:29That's right.
17:31So, that's, wow.
17:33So the check, I thought it was $2,500, and then next thing you know, it's, wait, $25,000, wait,
17:39no, it's $250,000 check.
17:42Oh, Jesus, you know.
17:44You know, we were kind of trying to help a guy that fit what our readers would be like.
17:49You kind of, you know, you could have been one of us, you could have been me, you could
17:52have been any of our readers.
17:52So, we were just trying to find something that guys could make a difference with.
17:57That's why they bought the shirts.
17:59He said it pretty much came down to the difference of, you know, what people said, what I'd do
18:02with the money.
18:03And he really wanted to make a substantial difference in somebody's life.
18:08And breaking it up into smaller paychecks wouldn't have really made a significant difference
18:12in someone's life.
18:14But, yeah, that's going to make a difference.
18:16That's what we want to do.
18:17That's what all the readers did.
18:19Wow.
18:20You know, the whole works.
18:21That's crazy.
18:23Oh.
18:24It's, like I said, it's, as much as I'd love to take credit, it's just all the readers.
18:28And again, it's like, just know what this, this shit you've been through.
18:33It's huge.
18:34He was the right guy to give the money to.
18:36We helped.
18:36He put it towards his new house.
18:39And then we did a bunch of events with him as well and supported him.
18:42I haven't talked to him a little bit.
18:43But, yeah, it was, um, it was a great cause.
18:46And, you know, the bar, people always thank me.
18:48It's like the Barstool people raised all the money and did a great job with it like they
18:52always do.
18:53We're sitting in the project that that $250,000 helped me with is my house.
19:00And that's what my family and other people that he interviewed said Mark would purchase
19:05a house for his family.
19:07And, uh, that would make a difference.
19:09And my life has definitely taken a turn for the different, but also so much for the better.
19:14You know, and like I said, the support from stoolies and everybody out there, complete strangers
19:20from radio listeners of Brighill and, like I said, and just viewers of the Barstool sports.
19:26And it's just been amazing.
19:28So, I mean, that just shows character in somebody as well as the stoolies in there, the viewers
19:33of Barstool sports because they didn't have to buy this shirt.
19:37You know, they didn't have to buy this shirt to support someone that they had no idea who
19:45the money was going to go to.
19:46But as, you know, just genuinely kind, generous people, they didn't know who the money was
19:53going to go to.
19:54And they still donated.
19:55And they raised over $250,000.
20:07Second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings in custody, and that's according to the Boston
20:20police.
20:21So, that is certainly good news.
20:25Let the good people of Boston get back to normal.
20:29Just announcing to the crowd the fact that the Boston police and I were handed the second
20:33suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings.
20:36We are all thrilled to hear that.
20:39This is our fucking city.
20:44And nobody's going to dictate our freedom.
20:48Stay strong.
20:49Well, it should be pretty clear by now that they picked the wrong city to do it.
20:53Not here in Boston.
20:55Not here in Boston.
20:56We've all gotten to know Jeff Bauman over the last couple of weeks in Boston.
21:02And the victim of the Marathon bombing is Carlos Arradondo.
21:06Brought him out as he did from the finish line and brought him out here to the pitcher's
21:12mound to throw out the first pitch.
21:13USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA
21:43permit darkness and hate to triumph over our civic faith. That cannot happen, and it will not.
