00:00So I had no problem with fights. I was ready to level them, and he was probably ready to scratch me up.
00:06Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at actors whose careers collapsed under scandal,
00:11but only after they cultivated a bad reputation.
00:13Your anger and your hate, I think, is coming off as erratic to people.
00:16Passion. My passion.
00:19James Corden.
00:20I'm the cat they all greet as I walk down the street in my coat of fastidious black.
00:27From Gavin and Stacey to many animated and musical blockbusters, James Corden worked hard on a lovable image,
00:34but many felt that he was working too hard.
00:36Corden's obtrusive interview style especially rubbed them the wrong way.
00:39Well, in 2019, a Reddit user recounted witnessing Corden verbally abuse a restaurant waitstaff.
00:45This behavior got him banned from a restaurant in 2022.
00:48I didn't get up out of my seat. I didn't call anyone names or use derogatory language.
00:55I've been walking around thinking that I hadn't done anything wrong, right?
00:59But the truth is, like I have, I made a rude comment, and it was wrong.
01:03It was an unnecessary comment. It was ungracious to the server.
01:08And just before he left the Late Late Show, Corden was ousted as a control freak
01:12by a director on the game show A League of Their Own.
01:14Do you want to tell us a bit about that?
01:16My 1799.
01:16That's right, I don't give a s***.
01:17With his wholesome brand unraveled, Corden has fallen from the spotlight.
01:21Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy? Not according to longtime critics.
01:24That I've ever upset anybody, ever, it was never my intention.
01:30It just wasn't. And I love that restaurant. I love the staff there.
01:34I hope I'm allowed in again one day so when I'm back in New York,
01:39I can go there and apologize in person, which is something I will absolutely do.
01:44Ezra Miller.
01:45Maybe there wasn't that much acting in the chilling breakout performance of We Need to Talk About Kevin.
01:49And finally, once you've sucked up an entire bottle of wine, you can go all gooey-eyed
01:53and say how nice it is to spend quality time together.
01:57You can scooch over and put your arm around my shoulder and give it a little squeeze.
02:02Ezra Miller went on to score acclaim in such big roles as The Flash in the DCEU.
02:07Their public image, however, was blemished by eccentric behavior and a volatile lifestyle.
02:11The world took notice in 2020 when Miller was filmed attacking a woman in Iceland.
02:23Two years later, a series of disorderly conduct complaints in Hawaii
02:26culminated in leaked body cam footage of Miller yelling at police during an arrest.
02:31To leave, police say Miller threw a chair that struck a female in the head,
02:35resulting in a half-inch cut on her forehead.
02:37It's the latest of several run-ins with the law for The Flash star just over the past month alone.
02:43Their disgrace would be cited as a factor in the franchise-killing flop of 2023's The Flash.
02:48I know sex exists. I've just never experienced it.
02:52Of course, Miller's former fans knew this meltdown was a long time coming.
02:56James Woods.
02:57I want you to understand that I am looking out for you in this thing, okay?
03:01You're going to get yours back. You're going to get back first.
03:03Noted for decades for his raw talent and intellect, James Woods is also known for saying some not-so-smart things.
03:09His behavior, particularly with women, was a source of controversy long before his outspoken conservative views.
03:15Well, the jury disagreed, didn't they?
03:17But if it's any consolation, you look really hot in that suit.
03:21Dream on.
03:21I will.
03:22Woods is at least agreeable in his claim that it's wrong for actors to be blacklisted over their political beliefs.
03:27However, bigoted comments and conspiracy theories on social media are a different story.
03:32Since the Trump era, Woods' statements have steadily drifted further to the right and even into violent rhetoric.
03:37He has not been on the screen since 2017.
03:40I am so sorry about all this, man.
03:41You know, I don't even know what I was thinking.
03:45I can't even sing. You know that.
03:47Woods may be a political martyr for some, but others feel that his hot-headedness has just caught up with him.
03:52Kevin Spacey.
03:52The public was shocked when Oscar winner Kevin Spacey was accused of serial sexual assault in 2017.
03:58Even now, there's little talk about how rumors long persisted in the industry.
04:02Rosie O'Donnell tweeted,
04:04We all knew about you, just as allegations were starting.
04:07There may also be something to a 2005 episode of Family Guy in which Stewie streaks while shouting,
04:12Help! I've escaped from Kevin Spacey's basement!
04:15Help! I've escaped from Kevin Spacey's basement! Help me!
04:18Finally, Anthony Rapp, Spacey's initial accuser, had described being assaulted by an unidentified actor in a 2001 interview with The Advocate.
04:26Rapp said in a statement to E.T., quote,
04:28I came forward with my story standing on the shoulders of the many courageous women and men who have been speaking out
04:34to shine a light and hopefully make a difference as they have done for me.
04:37More than 30 accusers and several legal victories later, Spacey's guilt is still not formally confirmed.
04:43Still, the scale of the allegations and the state of his career suggest another dark open secret in Hollywood.
04:48I hope that everyone who's dealing with these sorts of situations does feel the courage to come forward.
04:58Johnny Depp.
04:59Neither actor survived the court of public opinion after Depp vs. Heard in 2022.
05:03Outside the courtroom, it was pandemonium and fodder for the tabloids, a viral sensation leaning heavily in support of Depp.
05:12I think the vast majority of this trial was played out on social media.
05:17I think that this trial is an example of that gone haywire, gone amok.
05:23Amber Heard's loss and history of abusive behavior may have changed her fans' tune,
05:28but ex-husband Johnny Depp is no stranger to backlash.
05:31His bad boy image has been supplemented by arrests and lawsuits for violent behavior as far back as 1989.
05:38In recent years, scandals have included glib threats toward President Donald Trump.
05:42I apologize for the bad joke I attempted last night in poor taste about President Trump.
05:47It did not come out as intended, and I intended no malice.
05:51And ex-girlfriends Ellen Barker and Jennifer Grey have publicly spoken about his volatility.
05:55Getting into alleged fights in bars and skirmishes with cops.
06:00Quote, he'd started missing his flights home to L.A. having overslept.
06:04Or when he did come home, he'd be crazy jealous and paranoid about what I'd been up to while he was gone.
06:10Only after Heard's op-ed piece in Depp's defamation suit was he burned by Hollywood.
06:15The scandals sparked discussions not only about domestic abuse and gender dynamics,
06:19but also recognizing disturbing patterns in our favorite stars.
06:22Lindsay Lohan
06:23Downward spirals are sadly common among child actors.
06:26Lindsay Lohan seemed to be an exception, until her transition into more adult pieces was derailed by scandal.
06:32After surviving an overdose at age 18, she spent most of her 20s in and out of rehab for substance use disorder.
06:37What do you think, maybe I could just have one drink?
06:40Have you been there?
06:41No, I have, no, because I know that I can't.
06:44And that's what helps me, that's what teaches me not to.
06:46You know that you cannot.
06:47Right.
06:48Not even one?
06:49I play out the whole story of what I've put myself through when I do.
06:52And how that, how that just takes me here.
06:56Multiple arrests for disorderly conduct further fueled extensive tabloid coverage.
07:00Meanwhile, what work she could get tended to be low profile and critically panned.
07:04All artists feel that way. It's normal.
07:07No, I, I want to quit.
07:10The once wholesome Lohan suffered one of the most talked about celebrity downfalls of the 2000s,
07:15foreshadowed by personal history and the trappings of stardom at a young age.
07:18My main objective is, you know, to maintain my sobriety.
07:21Okay.
07:22And that's what, that's...
07:23And have you been sober since we last met?
07:25Yes, I have, yeah.
07:25Hello, let's celebrate that. That's where you are right now.
07:30She's been sober since 2013 and is steadily rebuilding her career and public image.
07:35Honey, I don't know your life.
07:38Why did you waste time insulting me?
07:41Why did I waste time judging your hair? This is not a competition.
07:45It kind of is, though.
07:46Shia LaBeouf.
07:47From polarizing genre fare to acclaimed dramas and subversive art,
07:51Shia LaBeouf has always been a perplexing talent,
07:54but his public image has been condemned by everyone, including the actor himself.
07:57His volatile behavior and substance use disorder have led to many disturbing public incidents.
08:08Viral videos of arrests, public meltdowns,
08:11and even violence obliterated LaBeouf's mainstream bankability.
08:15Even the art film industry mostly abandoned him
08:17after ex-girlfriend FKA Twigs sued him for severe abuse.
08:21FKA Twigs says she filed this lawsuit
08:23and is speaking out to help women in abusive relationships.
08:27He would often just start having an argument with me in the middle of the night,
08:32start accusing me of doing all sorts of things, planning to leave him in my head.
08:38He'd wake me up and tell me I was disgusting, that I was vile.
08:41It was a more gradual process than some feel he deserved.
08:44LaBeouf has expressed great remorse since committing to Christianity and sobriety in the 2020s.
08:48Still, he'd be the first to admit that he's blown too many chances for the public's comfort.
08:52Don't you see what we built? This is the dream.
08:55The unwanted, the unneeded, the uneducated.
08:56We're all together now. Power to the people.
08:58Power to the people!
08:59Chevy Chase
09:00Edgy and sardonic humor has cultivated a huge fan base for Chevy Chase.
09:05It hasn't exactly won many fans in the industry.
09:07Chase is notoriously difficult to work with for his ego, pranks, and highly inappropriate gestures.
09:13And he slapped me across the face, like, like, really hard.
09:21So hard that I saw red.
09:24Like, my first instinct was like, I'm gonna punch Chevy Chase.
09:28And, uh, you know, of course I didn't.
09:30For decades, the public has been well aware of his feuds and antics.
09:34They just didn't take that very seriously until his attempt to reach a new generation of fans with community.
09:38Chase was instead dismissed from the popular sitcom,
09:40due to hostilities that his former castmates have been very vocal about.
09:44There was an incident that happened.
09:46Why?
09:46I don't know, sir, I hope.
09:47Oh, well, uh, he made, uh, some remarks that were, uh, deemed to be racist.
09:55Uh, a comment that he made.
09:57And I think that was kind of it.
09:59He has responded in kind, but makes no apologies for his behavior.
10:03If Chase's reputation has burned bridges through the years, he's now practically blacklisted.
10:07Phil, he's like 6'1".
10:08Right.
10:09I'm like 6'3 and a half at the time.
10:11Right.
10:11And, uh, and John puts his hands on the door to block it off.
10:15And, and as I remember, I, I might've thrown a glancing punch off to his forehead.
10:19Wow.
10:20And Billy, I think, might've hit him in the back of the head.
10:22So, John was the one.
10:23He's not at all.
10:24Yeah.
10:25John broke it up.
10:26John broke his head up.
10:28Steven Seagal.
10:29The combativeness that made Steven Seagal a star with audiences made him a pariah among colleagues.
10:33His on-set abuses, particularly with stunt performers, hold nothing for the off-set ones that took decades to bring him down.
10:40Allegations of sexual harassment go all the way back to 1991.
10:44Several other women have accused Seagal of inappropriate behavior, including Juliana Margulies, Jenny McCarthy, Portia de Rossi, and Inside Edition's Lisa Guerrero when she was an aspiring actress.
10:55Though Seagal has been consistently lucky in court, he has a bizarre history of dishonest branding.
11:00The sheer volume of controversy steadily eroded his status until he was driven into obscurity amid the hashtag MeToo movement, an expression of extreme political views.
11:09Listen carefully, Mr. Seagal.
11:12Some things are more important than money.
11:16Seagal's friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin is particularly unsettling.
11:20Of course, the always divisive action icon's collapse has been a quiet process for some time.
11:24But I've worked with a lot of action stars who are now washed up, so that was easy for me to pick who that character would be.
11:32Uh-huh.
11:32Name names.
11:33Yeah, well, who is...
11:34Other name names?
11:35Who in mind?
11:35I know what you're thinking of, so...
11:37Yeah.
11:38All right, and Steven Seagal, I base it on.
11:40Ooh!
11:41Well, he's a bully, so I'm okay with that.
11:43Yeah.

11:59Charlie Sheen.
12:00Granted, a downfall is to be anticipated when there have been several.
12:04Charlie Sheen spent the 90s entrenched in controversy for his personal life, particularly his substance use disorder.
12:10And then what?
12:10What's the cure?
12:11Medicine?
12:12Make me like them?
12:13Not gonna happen.
12:15I'm bi-winning.
12:16I win here and I win there.
12:18Now what?
12:19If I'm bipolar, aren't there moments where a guy, like, crashes and is, like, in the corner, like, oh my god, it's all my mom's fault?
12:25Shut up.
12:26Shut up.
12:27Stop.
12:27Move forward.
12:28His love life has included many adult film stars and violent incidents.
12:32Sheen's film career was practically over by the time he bounced back with the hit sitcom Two and a Half Men.
12:36I make a lot of money for doing very little work, I sleep with beautiful women who don't ask about my feelings, I drive a jag, I live at the beach, and sometimes in the middle of the day, for no reason at all, I like to make myself a big pitcher of margaritas and take a nap out on the Sunday.
12:52But after years of further scandal and disturbing political claims, his feud with showrunner Chuck Lorre resulted in his termination in 2011.
12:59Sheen has been sober since 2017, but his past continues to haunt his career.
13:03Despite a history of comebacks as well, no one expects the next one to last for very long.
13:07Are you confident of that?
13:09Absolutely.
13:10Yeah.
13:10Yeah, I mean, sociopathically optimistic at times, but people call it delusional.
13:18But that's all right, if I'm not confident or optimistic about it, then no one else will be.
13:23What are some other acting career derailments that you saw coming a mile away?
13:26Speak up in the comments.
13:27I regret nothing.
13:28The past doesn't exist and the future doesn't yet.
13:33So why don't we focus on this instant.
