00:00Some of the best memes are the simplest ones. The word yogurt sounds like someone saying yo
00:04to someone named Gert. This simple joke has evolved into a huge meme on TikTok from which
00:08new slang is being coined, like gerting, which isn't what it sounds like. The joke was seemingly
00:12first shared to Twitter by several users in 2012, but these could just be cases of parallel thinking
00:17because it doesn't take a mastermind to come up with this one. But what you really want to know
00:21is why and how it's going viral now. There was a video posted at the end of March 2024 that
00:25largely started the meme's viral craze on TikTok. It was shared by user Aboyo, showing baby
00:30versions of the penguins of Madagascar with the joke overlaid in text. The style roughly
00:34fit the Jug Talk style of video, evident in its stretched frame and overblown 808 audio.
00:40The video acquired over 700,000 views over the next month and kicked off a meme where users
00:45had Gert responding to yo Gert in all sorts of ways, usually referencing other popular
00:50Jug Talk slang, like the incorrect usage of the abbreviation TS or SYBAU, which stands for
00:56shut your b**** up. As it spread, it morphed into a sort of phrasal template where users
01:00would post similar jokes with other words that could sound like greeting someone, like support,
01:04for example. So what is Gerting then? The Jug Talk layers continued to pile up as users
01:09incorporated yet another popular Jug Talk meme. What they're doing is very smart but very dangerous.
01:14This phrase is usually paired with images of animals or other meme subjects in the Jug Talk video
01:19format. Memers would start incorporating this phrase into their yogurt memes, to the point
01:23where Jdog157 would post one claiming that Gerting was a new slang term, meaning doing something
01:28very smart that is also very dangerous. Jdog thinks everyone should use this term, and a lot of
01:33memeers have.
