Wednesday Night Live 16 April 2025

In this episode, we analyze the political economy of autism through Toby Rogers' insights, linking rising prevalence rates to environmental factors, as noted by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. We highlight alarming global statistics, the staggering economic costs of autism spectrum disorder, and the lack of government action on toxic exposures. Engaging with audience experiences, we discuss the emotional toll on families and the societal stigma surrounding mental health. The conversation touches on ADHD diagnoses and parenting anxieties, emphasizing the need for compassionate dialogue and community engagement to address autism and mental health challenges.

00:00:00Good evening. Welcome to Wednesday Night Live. Hope you're doing well.
00:00:04Voice is returning to normal. 16th of April
00:00:072025. And we are on the Wednesday Night Live.
00:00:13I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume the audio and video
00:00:16going well.
00:00:21Going well. Testing.
00:00:25Testing 1, 2, 3. Testing 1, 2, 3. All right.
00:00:28All right. Just going to double check. And that looks good. All right.
00:00:32So, I wanted to
00:00:35we'll do your questions and comments, of course, as always.
00:00:38But Toby Rogers, the political economy of autism
00:00:41is something that was posted. This is
00:00:45kind of out of date. It's 2019.
00:00:49So, it's six years ago. But the numbers
00:00:53the numbers kind of blew my mind.
00:00:56And it blew my mind. Again, this is
00:00:59old. And Robert F. Kennedy Jr. just did a whole
00:01:04press conference today saying that they're weeks away from, I think, getting the
00:01:08kinds of data that is going to point the way towards
00:01:12the cause of the
00:01:14astonishing increases in
00:01:16autism over the past, say, half century.
00:01:19And he says he's convinced it's environmental.
00:01:23Who knows what that means? I think most of us have some idea what that means or what might mean.
00:01:27But I just think it's absolutely astounding.
00:01:31So, that's, again, this is 2019.
00:01:34The numbers blew my mind.
00:01:36And, of course, they're worse now.
00:01:38So, he wrote, autism is a global epidemic.
00:01:41An estimated
00:01:41one in 40 children in Australia,
00:01:45one in 64 children
00:01:47in the UK,
00:01:48and one in 36 children
00:01:49in the US have an autism
00:01:51spectrum disorder, or ASD.
00:01:55This is an
00:01:55enormous increase
00:01:56from the first known autism prevalence study
00:01:59in the US in 1970 that established
00:02:01an autism prevalence of less than
00:02:031 per 10,000.
00:02:06Several studies have shown
00:02:07that changes in diagnostic criteria
00:02:09account for only a small fraction
00:02:10of the increased
00:02:11prevalence.
00:02:13And I think
00:02:13Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
00:02:16did reference that they
00:02:17went back and
00:02:18retested everyone from an old study
00:02:20and found that they'd only missed
00:02:21one kid.
00:02:23Sorry, that's
00:02:24not the most detailed summary
00:02:26of a scientific study, but
00:02:27so
00:02:29this
00:02:31I knew these numbers in
00:02:33general, but he goes on to write
00:02:35families of children on the spectrum
00:02:37face extraordinary
00:02:39additional expenses
00:02:40and decreased earnings
00:02:42as one parent
00:02:43often becomes a caregiver.
00:02:46Autism
00:02:46autism
00:02:48costs the US
00:02:49268
00:02:51billion dollars
00:02:531.5% of GDP
00:02:54in 2015.
00:02:55If autism continues
00:02:57to increase
00:02:58at its current rate
00:02:59autism will cost
00:03:00the US
00:03:01over a trillion
00:03:02dollars
00:03:03or 3.6%
00:03:04of GDP
00:03:04in 2025
00:03:05as a point of comparison
00:03:07he says
00:03:08US Defense Department
00:03:09spending
00:03:10is 3.1%
00:03:11of GDP.
00:03:14Wow.
00:03:18That is wild.
00:03:20He goes on to write
00:03:20over the last decade
00:03:22several groups of leading
00:03:24epidemiologists
00:03:25doctors
00:03:25and public health experts
00:03:26have published consensus
00:03:27statements declaring
00:03:28that toxicants
00:03:29in the environment
00:03:29are contributing
00:03:30to the rising prevalence
00:03:31of neurodevelopmental
00:03:33disorders including
00:03:33autism.
00:03:36Beyond the consensus
00:03:37statements
00:03:37a range of independent
00:03:38researchers have
00:03:39identified many
00:03:39additional factors
00:03:40that appear to increase
00:03:41autism risk.
00:03:42Given rising prevalence
00:03:43rates and the
00:03:44extraordinary impacts
00:03:44of ASD on individuals
00:03:46families and communities
00:03:47what explains why
00:03:48public health
00:03:49authorities thus far
00:03:50have failed to ban
00:03:50or restrict toxicants
00:03:52that may have been
00:03:52shown to increase
00:03:53autism risk?
00:03:56He says
00:03:56I argue
00:03:57that autism
00:03:59is not only
00:03:59a public health
00:04:00issue
00:04:00it also represents
00:04:01a crisis
00:04:01of political economy
00:04:03in this thesis
00:04:04I will show
00:04:05that capitalism
00:04:05has transformed
00:04:06science and medicine
00:04:07from a focus
00:04:08on use values
00:04:09to a focus
00:04:10on exchange values
00:04:11regulation
00:04:11is largely
00:04:12a reflection
00:04:13of political power
00:04:13not scientific
00:04:14evidence
00:04:14and cultural
00:04:16and financial
00:04:17capture
00:04:17are blocking
00:04:18the sorts
00:04:18of regulatory
00:04:19responses
00:04:19that are necessary
00:04:20to stop
00:04:20the autism
00:04:21epidemic
00:04:21and
00:04:23if you want
00:04:25to look for
00:04:26this
00:04:26I found it
00:04:27on X
00:04:28it's called
00:04:29The Political
00:04:29Economy of Autism
00:04:30by Toby Rogers
00:04:33it's well worth
00:04:35well worth reading
00:04:37it's obviously
00:04:38you can imagine
00:04:38chock full of acronyms
00:04:39but well worth reading
00:04:41and
00:04:46let me just
00:04:47I'm going to ask
00:04:49this
00:04:50as a whole
00:04:52oh dear
00:04:54I seem to have
00:04:55lost my
00:04:55what do you just
00:04:56have to cycle
00:04:56through all the tabs
00:04:57to get the
00:04:58to get the icons
00:04:59back right
00:05:00control tab
00:05:01control tab
00:05:02swirly
00:05:04swirly
00:05:04swirly
00:05:05and here we go
00:05:07because I'm curious
00:05:10I mean this
00:05:10was all the data
00:05:11as of 2019
00:05:12and
00:05:14where is it at
00:05:15now
00:05:15it's got to be
00:05:18even wilder
00:05:18yeah okay
00:05:20let's
00:05:21crock it
00:05:21when I hear
00:05:24that
00:05:24rock and roll
00:05:25all right
00:05:26what
00:05:27percent
00:05:28of
00:05:29US
00:05:29GDP
00:05:31is
00:05:33autism
00:05:34costs
00:05:34that's not the
00:05:35most elegant way
00:05:36to put it
00:05:38that's 2015
00:05:45hmm
00:05:47oh so his
00:05:502025 projections
00:05:534.4
00:05:55461 billion
00:05:56range
00:05:56276 to
00:05:57over a trillion
00:05:58yeah
00:05:59okay so he took
00:06:00the very high end
00:06:01of that
00:06:01and it looks like
00:06:05the study that
00:06:06said costs could
00:06:07reach a little
00:06:07over a trillion
00:06:08or 3.6
00:06:09has been
00:06:10retracted
00:06:11so it's just
00:06:11important
00:06:12so given the
00:06:142025 projection
00:06:15of 461 billion
00:06:16and an estimated
00:06:17GDP of 25 trillion
00:06:18autism costs
00:06:19likely represent
00:06:201.82 percent
00:06:21of US GDP
00:06:21wow
00:06:23that's
00:06:26jaw-dropping
00:06:28to me
00:06:28and of course
00:06:30of course
00:06:30of course
00:06:31that is
00:06:33just
00:06:35the financial
00:06:36costs
00:06:36the emotional
00:06:37costs
00:06:37are
00:06:38absolutely
00:06:39wild
00:06:40so let's get
00:06:43to your comments
00:06:44and questions
00:06:44somebody says
00:06:47I wonder if
00:06:48some part
00:06:48of the rise
00:06:48in autism
00:06:49is the result
00:06:49of the shift
00:06:50in the priorities
00:06:51of education
00:06:51in civilizations
00:06:52with large amounts
00:06:53of specialized labor
00:06:53don't think
00:06:55that would be it
00:06:56I don't think
00:06:57that would be it
00:06:57I mean
00:06:59mothers and fathers
00:07:01are older now
00:07:02maybe that
00:07:02has an effect
00:07:03there are
00:07:04could be
00:07:05environmental toxins
00:07:05I know the vaccines
00:07:06are in the targets
00:07:08for a lot of people
00:07:09so
00:07:11it's some wild
00:07:16wild numbers
00:07:17and
00:07:18do you know
00:07:21do you know
00:07:21a family
00:07:21with somebody
00:07:23who has autism
00:07:24do you know
00:07:25a family
00:07:25with somebody
00:07:26who has
00:07:26a child
00:07:28or I guess
00:07:28it could be anyone
00:07:29who has autism
00:07:30or it's
00:07:31it's a spectrum
00:07:33right
00:07:33I get there's a spectrum
00:07:34but I'm just curious
00:07:35whether you know
00:07:36people like that
00:07:37a kind of

00:11:53just to have

00:14:55will bring the

00:14:56halt now
00:14:58what's worth
00:14:59content the
00:14:59first 30% of
00:15:00any video contains
00:15:01no worthwhile
00:15:01information I'm
00:15:03not saying that's
00:15:04entirely right
00:15:04have you seen
00:15:12this I'm
00:15:16obviously not an
00:15:23expert in this
00:15:23but it's pretty
00:15:24wild to see the
00:15:25blowback that's
00:15:26coming out of
00:15:26China for these
00:15:27tariffs I don't
00:15:29know if you've
00:15:29seen these
00:15:29videos it's
00:15:30wild you just
00:15:31you never know
00:15:32what's coming in
00:15:32out of left
00:15:33field or right
00:15:33field so what's
00:15:34wild is I think
00:15:37that a lot of
00:15:38the Chinese
00:15:39manufacturers have
00:15:40contracts that
00:15:41say you can't
00:15:42talk about who
00:15:42you're manufacturing
00:15:43for like if
00:15:44you're manufacturing
00:15:44for Hermes or
00:15:47something like
00:15:47that you can't
00:15:48say who you're
00:15:48manufacturing for
00:15:49and I think the
00:15:49government has
00:15:50liberated them
00:15:51from these
00:15:52contracts and so
00:15:53now you've got
00:15:53all of these
00:15:54Chinese manufacturers
00:15:55who are out
00:15:56there and
00:15:57they're saying
00:15:57oh you know
00:15:59here's how much
00:15:59it costs us to
00:16:00manufacture it
00:16:01costs us $300
00:16:01and then you
00:16:03buy it for $10,000
00:16:04like look at this
00:16:05markup it's
00:16:05crazy and you
00:16:07know I did not
00:16:08have that in my
00:16:09tariff bingo
00:16:10card that the
00:16:13Chinese manufacturers
00:16:14were going to end
00:16:15up toasting the
00:16:17reputation of the
00:16:21high-end manufacturers
00:16:23or high-end
00:16:24retailers in
00:16:25America and you
00:16:26can see just
00:16:26endless endless
00:16:27amounts of these
00:16:29videos with I
00:16:32think quite a
00:16:33significant amount
00:16:34of glee

00:18:53that I've heard about

00:19:40refreshing oh it's
00:19:41good to hear but I
00:19:41think you mean
00:19:42breastfeeding raising
00:19:43IQ
00:19:44yeah 193 bucks a
00:19:47month yeah it's back
00:19:48in the day man
00:19:49back in the day
00:19:50I remember when I
00:19:53first came to
00:19:53Canada in 1977
00:19:551977
00:19:57candy bar was a
00:20:00dime 10 cents
00:20:02all right government
00:20:12spent 1.3 trillion in
00:20:13the past six months
00:20:14how can doge
00:20:15compete with that
00:20:16yeah well it's
00:20:18it's pretty tough to
00:20:19pay whack-a-mole
00:20:20with government
00:20:20spending right
00:20:21I mean the best way
00:20:24to lower spending is
00:20:25to cut off things
00:20:26from the source
00:20:26but that's pretty
00:20:29tough
00:20:29here's another little
00:20:37interesting fact
00:20:37after all the
00:20:39employees go home
00:20:39tall office buildings
00:20:40get just a little
00:20:42taller
00:20:42a 1,300 foot tall
00:20:44skyscraper shrinks
00:20:45about 1.5 millimeters
00:20:46under the way to
00:20:4750,000 occupants
00:20:48assuming they weigh
00:20:49about the human
00:20:50average
00:20:50isn't that wild
00:20:51little things I'd
00:20:54never really thought
00:20:55of
00:20:56and there was a
00:21:01pose that said
00:21:01did you know you
00:21:02should always wash
00:21:03your bread before
00:21:03you eat it
00:21:04I'm like I'm afraid
00:21:05that's a hard no
00:21:06daddy likes it
00:21:08crunchy
00:21:09all right
00:21:20see your questions
00:21:21comments
00:21:21yeah I don't know
00:21:28how people just
00:21:29drug kids for these
00:21:31descriptive based
00:21:32behavioral disorders
00:21:33I mean the drugs are
00:21:35real but
00:21:35the disorders are
00:21:37just descriptions
00:21:38not a not a good
00:21:41there's no blood
00:21:41test for this
00:21:43stuff as a whole

00:22:10plug into their
00:22:10friend network
00:22:11worked the same

00:23:15who didn't succumb
00:23:16went down do your
00:23:17own research rabbit
00:23:18holes and also by
00:23:20and large went
00:23:21mad he writes
00:23:22and everyone was
00:23:24forcibly hooked on
00:23:25screens you know
00:23:26those addiction
00:23:26studies where you put
00:23:27rats in cages and
00:23:28let them have all the
00:23:28heroin they want
00:23:29turns out it's a
00:23:30combination of cage
00:23:31and heroin that's
00:23:32addictive the rat is
00:23:33bored it has nothing
00:23:34to do and it is
00:23:35lonely but here this
00:23:37morphine laced water
00:23:38will make it all go
00:23:39away for a while
00:23:40that was done to
00:23:43every single one of
00:23:44us we were turned
00:23:45into screen junkies
00:23:47I'm swiping this on
00:23:48my screen now instead
00:23:49of talking to people
00:23:50sound familiar
00:23:50we went from a world
00:23:54with an active social
00:23:57flow dysfunctional as
00:23:58it was and let's
00:23:59face it it was the
00:24:01effing ganges of
00:24:02social rivers at
00:24:02least it was there
00:24:03at least we were
00:24:04sort of connected to
00:24:05the people in our
00:24:05physical presence
00:24:06then we crossed the
00:24:10river Styx and
00:24:11emerged into a world
00:24:12of shades lonely
00:24:14crazy people who
00:24:15can't talk to one
00:24:16another even if they
00:24:17wanted to which they
00:24:18largely don't because
00:24:18they no longer have
00:24:19anything in common
00:24:20with all these
00:24:21strangers surrounding
00:24:21them except for the
00:24:23screens and the
00:24:25loneliness the leaf
00:24:28waters were poured
00:24:29down our throats
00:24:30whether we wanted
00:24:31to drink them or
00:24:31not the old world
00:24:34human world faded
00:24:36from our memories
00:24:36like morning mist
00:24:37and now we wander a
00:24:39gray and barren waste
00:24:41unrecognized and
00:24:43unrecognizing searching
00:24:45for something we no
00:24:46longer even really
00:24:47know how to
00:24:48articulate I mean a bit
00:24:52strong of course and
00:24:53but yeah very well
00:24:58written
00:24:58hey Steph could you
00:25:07briefly share your
00:25:07thoughts on the
00:25:08substance movie and
00:25:09why it sucks ass I
00:25:11think it sucks because
00:25:12it has little dialogue
00:25:13and runs like a
00:25:14cheesy movies music
00:25:14video also that it
00:25:16uses nauseating
00:25:16fisheye lens close-up
00:25:17shots like the one of
00:25:18the guy eating shrimp
00:25:19he's the gross
00:25:20bad guy isn't he
00:25:22haven't we made it
00:25:24obvious enough that
00:25:24he's the gross bad
00:25:25guy yeah that is
00:25:28it's a horror of the
00:25:32flesh it's the horror
00:25:33of hedonism it's the
00:25:36horror of chasing
00:25:37nerve endings and
00:25:39dopamine rather than
00:25:40virtue and love
00:25:41and I you know
00:25:48everyone said
00:25:49D'Amour was great
00:25:50she's just frozen
00:25:51faced I guess a
00:25:52little bit irregularly
00:25:53that way so
00:25:54but yeah it was it's
00:25:57it's the horror of
00:25:58living for the flesh
00:26:00which is seductive to
00:26:02the young and
00:26:03destructive to the
00:26:03aged
00:26:04somebody says I'm a
00:26:09regular at a hipster
00:26:10cafe should I be
00:26:11honest with the
00:26:12barista and tell him
00:26:14what I really think
00:26:14or avoid talking
00:26:15about big issues or
00:26:16should I avoid being
00:26:16a regular at a
00:26:17hipster cafe I mean
00:26:19I think in general be
00:26:20honest with your
00:26:21thoughts and feelings
00:26:21with people as a
00:26:23whole but you know
00:26:24obviously be prepared
00:26:25for blowback but
00:26:25all right
00:26:31Gagusta says hi
00:26:36Steph I hope all is
00:26:37well I just
00:26:39experience I just
00:26:41experienced one of
00:26:41those heartbreaking
00:26:42things in my life
00:26:43sorry to hear that
00:26:44I'm really close with
00:26:45my younger cousin he
00:26:46is 18 year old male
00:26:47and I'm a 25 year old
00:26:48female he was drunk
00:26:50for the first time and
00:26:51had a really aggressive
00:26:53flip where he was
00:26:55saying really nasty
00:26:56stuff to his dad and
00:26:58people were holding
00:26:58him so he wouldn't
00:26:59hurt him he was never
00:27:01aggressive like that in
00:27:02front of me when I
00:27:03tried stepping up he
00:27:04called me a whore
00:27:06tried to hurt me but
00:27:07people were holding
00:27:07him what do you
00:27:09think I should do
00:27:09oof I'm sorry to
00:27:12hear that that's
00:27:13that's a very tough
00:27:15situation
00:27:16so of course
00:27:22alcohol is a
00:27:25disinhibitor
00:27:25the Latin in vino
00:27:27veritas
00:27:28in wine there is
00:27:30truth
00:27:31in wine there is
00:27:32truth
00:27:33so I imagine that
00:27:38he has had some
00:27:39big difficult ugly
00:27:42nasty significant
00:27:43issues with his
00:27:44father and they've
00:27:45been bottled up in
00:27:46this wall of denial
00:27:48and avoidance and
00:27:50what has happened is
00:27:51the alcohol has
00:27:55dissolved some of the
00:27:55ego barriers between
00:27:56the trauma and the
00:27:57expression
00:27:58and the
00:28:01so if you
00:28:06if you bottle up
00:28:08aggression for too
00:28:09long it's going to
00:28:10come out in random
00:28:10and often destructive
00:28:13ways
00:28:13so I would say
00:28:16when I mean I
00:28:18assume he's calmer
00:28:18now right the
00:28:19alcohol has passed
00:28:20so what I would do
00:28:21if I were in your
00:28:22shoes and again I'm
00:28:23really sorry for the
00:28:24situation what I
00:28:25would do if I were in
00:28:25your shoes is I would
00:28:26sit down with him and
00:28:27say tell me what
00:28:29was going on for you
00:28:31I mean I'm sure you
00:28:32remember some of it I
00:28:33don't know how drunk
00:28:33he was oh he was
00:28:35drunk so he didn't
00:28:35just have a couple of
00:28:36drinks he was drunk
00:28:36so yeah what do you
00:28:38think was going on
00:28:38where was that coming
00:28:39from what do you
00:28:40think tell me tell me
00:28:42about the thoughts
00:28:47behind the words or
00:28:50even deeper tell me
00:28:52about the memories
00:28:53behind the feelings
00:28:54behind the thoughts
00:28:54behind the words
00:28:55relentless curiosity is
00:29:00one of the most
00:29:00powerful things in the
00:29:01world just relentless
00:29:02curiosity just just keep
00:29:04asking just keep asking
00:29:06I mean and don't take
00:29:09offense I mean I'm sure
00:29:11you don't need to have
00:29:12me say that to you but
00:29:13you know I mean he
00:29:14called you a whore it's
00:29:15a terrible thing to say
00:29:16he was drunk and we can
00:29:21forgive people what they
00:29:22say when they're first
00:29:23drunk because he didn't
00:29:24know this was going to
00:29:25happen he didn't know
00:29:26this was going to be his
00:29:26experience and so I
00:29:29think forgiveness is
00:29:30important don't take it
00:29:31personally it's something
00:29:33talking that's not his
00:29:36kind of conscious mind
00:29:37if that makes sense and
00:29:40yeah just just keep
00:29:41asking keep asking what
00:29:43was going on for him
00:29:47what he was thinking
00:29:47get back into politics
00:29:51Steph I don't think I
00:29:54will I appreciate the
00:29:56feedback let's see here
00:30:01yeah just ask a bunch of
00:30:04questions and do your
00:30:07very best to just be
00:30:08open-hearted open-minded
00:30:09and not judgmental
00:30:11all right somebody says I
00:30:14was at a friend's house who
00:30:15has three kids all under
00:30:17four years old the youngest
00:30:18child roughly 14 months she
00:30:20cannot talk yet but can
00:30:21communicate when she
00:30:23doesn't get her way she
00:30:23will lay down on the
00:30:24floor and cry in obvious
00:30:25protest I noticed she's
00:30:27also very demanding at
00:30:28dinner I'm not blaming her
00:30:29at all for the behavior
00:30:31because I think she's just
00:30:33doing what is most
00:30:34effective to get what she
00:30:34wants it was strange to me
00:30:36because my daughter never
00:30:37did that and my friend
00:30:38doesn't believe me any
00:30:39advice yeah yeah
00:30:45children people think that
00:30:59children escalate until they
00:31:00get what they want I don't
00:31:02think that's true at least not
00:31:03in my experience and I've had a
00:31:05lot of experience with kids
00:31:06you probably remember I've
00:31:07worked in a daycare for many
00:31:08years as a teenager children
00:31:10and most people they don't
00:31:12escalate until they get what
00:31:14they want they escalate until
00:31:16they feel heard
00:31:17you I mean the difference is
00:31:24really important this is why
00:31:26listening is so powerful if
00:31:29people feel heard they mind a
00:31:32lot less being told no if
00:31:34people are told no without
00:31:35feeling heard they escalate in
00:31:37general
00:31:38so people think that oh well
00:31:45if I listen to my kid my kid
00:31:46wants a cookie right if I
00:31:49listen to my kid I gotta give
00:31:51her a cookie so they just they
00:31:54don't even listen and then the
00:31:55kid escalates
00:31:56having a tantrum or something
00:31:59but if your kid wants a cookie
00:32:01you can absolutely listen to
00:32:03that you can absolutely
00:32:04sympathize with your kid
00:32:06wanting a cookie and you can
00:32:09say no cookie if the kid is
00:32:11heard and understood it deflates
00:32:14the escalation I mean this isn't
00:32:18true for everyone at all times
00:32:19obviously but with kids in
00:32:21particular if they feel heard they
00:32:23tend to de-escalate
00:32:24Jared says true for people
00:32:31calling into customer service
00:32:32line being heard is worth three
00:32:33solutions yeah that's a great
00:32:36point feeling heard is lacking how
00:32:38would you show a 14-month-old that
00:32:39she was heard
00:32:40well you'll have to give me the
00:32:45scenario of what she's complaining
00:32:46about
00:32:47but I mean obviously comfort is key
00:32:50if you comfort the child then
00:32:53you're showing that the child's
00:32:55upset means something to you
00:32:56you know I mean I've mentioned
00:32:57this before and I think I wrote
00:32:58about this in peaceful parenting
00:32:59peacefulparenting.com
00:33:00please share the book but
00:33:03I when my daughter would be in the
00:33:09store you know they put all of
00:33:10this evil right fruit colored candy
00:33:12at eye level for kids right and my
00:33:17daughter would be like I want I
00:33:19want the candy and I'd be like
00:33:21yeah it's really looks great
00:33:23doesn't it I want the candy too I
00:33:24could I could scoop that whole
00:33:25thing up I could eat the whole
00:33:26thing I would I would even eat
00:33:27the wrappers I wouldn't care I
00:33:29would just pass those through and
00:33:32so I empathize and sympathize I
00:33:34said yeah I mean I have to say no
00:33:36to candy I like it too much I have
00:33:38to say no to candy and so you're
00:33:43modeling you understand that they
00:33:45want the candy you understand that
00:33:46it's attractive that it's
00:33:47appealing that you're drooling even
00:33:49thinking about it so when kids want
00:33:56something you can empathize with them
00:33:58wanting it yeah whereas people think
00:34:02that the kid says I want candy and the
00:34:07parents then say well you can't have
00:34:09the candy but the kid's saying I want
00:34:13the candy not give me the candy now if
00:34:17the kid's saying I want candy you can
00:34:19say I completely understand I want
00:34:24candy too I want candy all right so I
00:34:30empathize with the feelings so that the
00:34:32kid feels understood and hurt and
00:34:33de-escalation is almost always the
00:34:35result
00:34:35so he says when I was over she was
00:34:41pointing and demanding stuff to hold
00:34:42just various things the parents were
00:34:44just refusing yeah so you I mean
00:34:47particularly with toddlers you just
00:34:49have to multitask so if she's pointing
00:34:52at something on the shelf you're
00:34:53chatting away as the parent you go get
00:34:55the thing from the shelf and you give
00:34:56it to the kid right there's there's no
00:35:00reason to say no I mean you you say
00:35:03yes as much as possible to your kids
00:35:08wouldn't you I mean you say yes as much
00:35:12as possible to your wife you say yes as
00:35:15much as possible to your boss you say
00:35:17yes as much as possible I mean how many
00:35:19questions do I not answer like one percent
00:35:20of questions I don't answer so with with
00:35:25with your kids you you say yes as much
00:35:28as possible
00:35:28Jimmy says hey we have elections coming
00:35:35up here in Australia do you personally
00:35:37think financially supporting a political
00:35:38party is a good way to spend your money
00:35:39thanks I mean I really can't answer
00:35:42that I'm a Bitcoin guy I can't answer
00:35:46what is a value to you
00:35:47what would be your response if someone
00:35:52looks really sad when they're talking
00:35:54to you would you not mention it sure
00:35:56yeah I mean it's kind of distracting if
00:35:59you don't right if somebody's like
00:36:01really you know sad and hollow-eyed and
00:36:03then
00:36:07it'd be kind of distracting and
00:36:13dissociating to not notice that well
00:36:15just you know pause for a second
00:36:16you seem to be coming down something
00:36:19you want to talk about or anything
00:36:20that I can do to help but yeah you
00:36:24should mention it it's a cry for help
00:36:27or cry for recognition or a plea for
00:36:29understanding or curiosity or something
00:36:32like that
00:36:34all right
00:36:42what did I miss oh yes uh freedomain.com
00:36:48somebody says I recently re-watched
00:36:50Blue Velvet since you had mentioned the
00:36:52opening scene as you may know from the
00:36:5570s onward Lynch lived in Los Angeles
00:36:57do you think some of his portrayal of
00:36:59American society in this movie is informed
00:37:00by his life in Hollywood
00:37:01incidentally I was horrified to find
00:37:04he had a relationship with the lead
00:37:04actress
00:37:05yes
00:37:08um
00:37:09David Lynch
00:37:10you know dove into the dregs he just
00:37:12he went straight to the dregs to the
00:37:14biting insects underneath
00:37:15uh the grass
00:37:17and
00:37:18I talk about this more in the
00:37:23French Revolution like you leave
00:37:25the wounded behind in society you leave
00:37:28the wounded behind at your very great
00:37:29peril very very very great peril
00:37:33there's almost no spirit more spiteful
00:37:42aggressive and sometimes hateful than
00:37:45the spirit
00:37:48left behind on a broken refuse of
00:37:51childhood while society marches ahead
00:37:53in joy and glee
00:37:54the urge to
00:37:57backstrike
00:37:58is almost overwhelming
00:38:00and
00:38:04did the equation
00:38:06and we saw this played out in the
00:38:08French Revolution other revolutions as
00:38:09well
00:38:10the playbook is something like this
00:38:12if you leave me behind
00:38:15you're worthless to me
00:38:18you mean nothing to me
00:38:20if you leave me behind
00:38:23if society moves ahead
00:38:26and leaves
00:38:28the victims of child abuse behind
00:38:30or blames them
00:38:30for their own
00:38:32dysfunctions
00:38:32if society marches on
00:38:35and leaves
00:38:37the broken behind
00:38:39they're broken
00:38:42will break back
00:38:43they will break society back
00:38:45a lot of vengeance in that
00:38:47timpool posted about a successful phd woman who traveled the world says she's missing something from her life
00:39:16family
00:39:17you're missing your family
00:39:18billions of years of evolution
00:39:19and one day feminists just decided we can live without family
00:39:22so this woman wrote
00:39:26let me just zoom this up a little
00:39:28apparently
00:39:33apparently I can't zoom
00:39:34alright
00:39:34something is missing from my adult life
00:39:37I don't know what it is
00:39:3831 year old female
00:39:39so I did the crazy things
00:39:41I worked my ass off
00:39:43through 12 years of education
00:39:44and training
00:39:45through to my phd
00:39:46I've traveled to like
00:39:4730 plus countries
00:39:48have a few
00:39:49close-ish friends
00:39:51a 15 year monogamous relationship
00:39:53with a man
00:39:53that makes me laugh
00:39:54every day
00:39:55I've pulled myself out of poverty
00:39:57and feel like I've accomplished
00:39:58a lot of my initial goals
00:39:59the others will take time
00:40:00I have a
00:40:03good paying
00:40:04but stressful job
00:40:05that takes up
00:40:05most of my time
00:40:06most days I get up
00:40:07at about 5am
00:40:08come home at about
00:40:097.30 or 8pm
00:40:10make dinner
00:40:11go to bed
00:40:11on the weekends
00:40:13I
00:40:13I don't really know
00:40:15what to do
00:40:16besides groceries
00:40:17chores and meal prep
00:40:18it just feels like
00:40:19something is missing
00:40:21I'm bored
00:40:24despite how hectic
00:40:24my life is
00:40:25I don't have time
00:40:27or resources
00:40:27to start a family
00:40:28I make good money
00:40:29but not enough
00:40:29to pay for childcare
00:40:3012 hours a day
00:40:31I don't live in an area
00:40:33with any sense of community
00:40:33with my schedule
00:40:35there are no classes
00:40:36or activities
00:40:36I can join in my area
00:40:38I'm not religious
00:40:38so I suppose
00:40:40there isn't a spiritual aspect
00:40:41of my life either
00:40:42is this really
00:40:44what adulthood
00:40:45is?
00:40:49just
00:40:50working and
00:40:51coming home
00:40:53until you can afford
00:40:54to retire
00:40:55I just keep trying
00:40:57to get back
00:40:57into the things
00:40:58I used to enjoy
00:40:59but I just feel so
00:41:01uninterested
00:41:03and apathetic
00:41:04video games
00:41:05aren't doing it
00:41:06I can't get into
00:41:07new books
00:41:07I'm increasingly
00:41:09distancing myself
00:41:10from doom scrolling
00:41:10on social media
00:41:11I'm not permitted
00:41:13to take vacations
00:41:13at my job
00:41:14so anything
00:41:15but work specific
00:41:15travel is off the table
00:41:16I'm an American
00:41:18scientist
00:41:20so life is
00:41:22quite stressful
00:41:23right now
00:41:23from multiple angles
00:41:24but it feels like
00:41:25this has been going on
00:41:25for at least a year
00:41:26I just
00:41:28don't know
00:41:31what else to do
00:41:32or look forward to
00:41:33it's a very
00:41:35unsettling
00:41:36hollow
00:41:37feeling
00:41:38I needed my fix
00:41:57buy Steph's books
00:41:58freedomain.com
00:41:59slash books
00:41:59I mean
00:42:00they're mostly free
00:42:01but I appreciate that
00:42:02become an American
00:42:04Steph
00:42:04well let's see
00:42:06I'll just check
00:42:07and see if the
00:42:07five million dollars
00:42:08for Trump's gold card
00:42:09has been deposited
00:42:10we'll see
00:42:12we'll see
00:42:13yeah
00:42:16that
00:42:16was a great line
00:42:18from Shadowlands
00:42:19with Anthony Hopkins
00:42:21and Deborah Winger
00:42:21where Anthony Hopkins
00:42:23plays
00:42:23C.S. Lewis
00:42:25I think
00:42:26and
00:42:26you get a sense
00:42:31of futility
00:42:31sense of waste
00:42:32of course
00:42:33the academics
00:42:34the old academics
00:42:34just feel
00:42:35pointless
00:42:36I'll tell you that
00:42:38I've
00:42:39I've experienced
00:42:40a lot of things
00:42:41in my life
00:42:42a very
00:42:42interesting
00:42:44and
00:42:45rich life
00:42:45I have
00:42:46experienced
00:42:47a lot of things
00:42:47in my life
00:42:48but I have not
00:42:51experienced
00:42:51that kind of
00:42:52emptiness
00:42:52at least not
00:42:53that I can recall
00:42:54I'm sure occasionally
00:42:55but nothing
00:42:56that I can really
00:42:57nothing I can really
00:42:58recall
00:42:59yeah
00:43:02do you guys
00:43:04have that
00:43:04what this woman
00:43:06is talking about
00:43:07this sense of
00:43:07repetition
00:43:08waste
00:43:09emptiness
00:43:09I mean
00:43:13I think if you're
00:43:14a scientist
00:43:14and you forego
00:43:15having children
00:43:15because you're
00:43:16gonna
00:43:16work on some
00:43:18you know
00:43:18big advancement
00:43:19or but
00:43:19if it's just
00:43:21a bunch of
00:43:22make work
00:43:22government
00:43:24normie slop
00:43:26I don't know
00:43:27I think it's
00:43:28pretty hard
00:43:29I think deep down
00:43:30people process
00:43:31whether they're
00:43:31adding virtue
00:43:32and goodness
00:43:32to the world
00:43:33or not
00:43:33and
00:43:36if you're
00:43:39not adding
00:43:39goodness to the
00:43:40world
00:43:40in some manner
00:43:41I think you're
00:43:43just gonna
00:43:43do a slow burn
00:43:45into
00:43:46inconsequentiality
00:43:47in your mind
00:43:48we're here to do
00:43:49good
00:43:49it's the one
00:43:50thing that we
00:43:50can do
00:43:51that
00:43:53no other creature
00:43:54can do
00:43:54is good
00:43:54it's the one
00:43:56thing
00:43:56one thing
00:43:58do you think
00:44:06this is true
00:44:07this is from
00:44:07Amy Therese
00:44:08she wrote
00:44:08I believed
00:44:08for a long
00:44:09time
00:44:09that most
00:44:10people shy
00:44:11of psychopaths
00:44:12could be
00:44:12reasoned with
00:44:13but many
00:44:13ordinary people
00:44:14can't
00:44:15the things
00:44:15they say
00:44:16in conversation
00:44:16aren't their
00:44:17own considered
00:44:17responses to
00:44:18the queries
00:44:19of their
00:44:19interlocutor
00:44:21sorry
00:44:21often they are
00:44:23a pastiche
00:44:23of other
00:44:24people's
00:44:24half-masticated
00:44:25thought
00:44:25they don't
00:44:25really understand
00:44:26they just
00:44:26chew them up
00:44:27swallow and
00:44:27regurgitate them
00:44:28on call
00:44:29like Pavlov's
00:44:30dog
00:44:31when something
00:44:31similar is
00:44:32discussed
00:44:32well that's
00:44:33Ayn Rand's
00:44:34second-handers
00:44:34right
00:44:34social metaphysicians
00:44:35there's a big
00:44:46debate
00:44:46that's going on
00:44:47comes out of
00:44:48the Douglas Murray
00:44:49and Dave Smith
00:44:50debate
00:44:50and just for
00:44:54theory
00:44:54I've been quite
00:44:55fascinated with
00:44:56for many years
00:44:57it's a very
00:44:58sort of
00:44:59I mean
00:45:00in this
00:45:00sort of
00:45:00status concept
00:45:01it would
00:45:01still apply
00:45:02in a
00:45:02free society
00:45:03in a
00:45:03voluntary
00:45:03society
00:45:04but
00:45:05I do
00:45:07find
00:45:08just for
00:45:08theory
00:45:08very
00:45:09interesting
00:45:10yeah
00:45:11bombinthebrain.com
00:45:12thanks
00:45:12Karis
00:45:13yeah
00:45:13bombinthebrain.com
00:45:14it's very
00:45:14important
00:45:14alright
00:45:18so let me
00:45:18just get to
00:45:19your questions
00:45:19I have
00:45:24wide
00:45:24anxious
00:45:25eyes
00:45:25when talking
00:45:25to people
00:45:26often
00:45:26do you
00:45:26think
00:45:26allowing
00:45:27myself
00:45:27to feel
00:45:27more
00:45:27emotion
00:45:28when talking
00:45:28to people
00:45:28will help
00:45:29prevent that
00:45:29oh like
00:45:31Kash Patel
00:45:32has that
00:45:32sort of
00:45:33slight
00:45:33deer in the
00:45:34headlights
00:45:34look when
00:45:35talking to
00:45:35people
00:45:35I had that
00:45:37too
00:45:38I think
00:45:38my pupils
00:45:39my eyes
00:45:39would dilate
00:45:40I would see
00:45:40that when I
00:45:41was up
00:45:41giving speeches
00:45:42I just
00:45:42a little
00:45:44scary
00:45:44but
00:45:45wide
00:45:47anxious
00:45:47eyes
00:45:48when talking
00:45:48to people
00:45:48but you
00:45:50do that
00:45:50as a
00:45:50mark of
00:45:51submission
00:45:51if you're
00:45:52talking to
00:45:52people
00:45:53and your
00:45:53shoulders
00:45:53are up
00:45:54you're doing
00:45:56that as a
00:45:56mark of
00:45:57submission
00:45:57so you
00:46:00should probably
00:46:01stop signaling
00:46:02submission to
00:46:03people
00:46:03you don't have
00:46:05to narrow
00:46:06your eyes
00:46:06and use
00:46:06tough guy
00:46:07voice
00:46:07but I
00:46:08would say
00:46:08calm down
00:46:10the startled
00:46:11deer response
00:46:12and people
00:46:13who are
00:46:13physically
00:46:14relaxed
00:46:14signal
00:46:16equality
00:46:16people who
00:46:17are tense
00:46:17signal either
00:46:19dominance or
00:46:20submission
00:46:20but people
00:46:22who are
00:46:22physically
00:46:22relaxed
00:46:23you're
00:46:23signaling
00:46:24a comfort
00:46:25level and
00:46:26a win-win
00:46:26negotiation
00:46:27situation
00:46:28so
00:46:31as far as
00:46:32you know
00:46:33I'm a big
00:46:34fan of
00:46:34body work
00:46:35not the
00:46:36store
00:46:36I'm a big
00:46:37fan of
00:46:37body work

00:46:42aromatherapy
00:46:44tai chi
00:46:46all kinds
00:46:47of things
00:46:48it's
00:46:49especially
00:46:49you know
00:46:50we who
00:46:51are in
00:46:51this kind
00:46:52of
00:46:52conversation
00:46:52we do

00:47:00reaches
00:47:01of ultimate
00:47:01ideals
00:47:02and
00:47:03it's

00:58:11the

00:58:13is
00:58:13what
00:58:16do
00:58:16you
00:58:17do
00:58:17like
00:58:17if
00:58:18you
00:58:18have
00:58:18two
00:58:19armies
00:58:20facing
00:58:21each
00:58:21other
00:58:21across
00:58:22the
00:58:22battlefield
00:58:22you know
00:58:23sort of
00:58:23trench warfare
00:58:23style
00:58:24or Napoleon
00:58:24style
00:58:25and they
00:58:25clash
00:58:26together
00:58:26and there's
00:58:26no civilians
00:58:27around
00:58:27and so
00:58:28on
00:58:28we
00:58:31accept
00:58:31and
00:58:31understand
00:58:31that
00:58:33this
00:58:36is war
00:58:37and
00:58:38there's
00:58:38no
00:58:38problems
00:58:39I mean
00:58:39obviously
00:58:40there are
00:58:40problems
00:58:40but there's
00:58:41no
00:58:41foundational
00:58:41moral
00:58:42problems
00:58:42because
00:58:43there aren't
00:58:43civilians
00:58:43in the
00:58:44environment
00:58:44so it's
00:58:45just
