Recommended tempo for this piece is 66 bpm, although the exam books states that students may prefer a slightly slower tempo of 60bpm. A good legato (smooth) touch is required throughout, with the usual mixture of contrasting dynamics to watch out for.
Use of the sustain pedal is encouraged throughout. (The sustain pedal is also sometimes known as the damper pedal) There are numerous markings in the music (look for the signs “Ped.”) which indicate when you should press and release the pedal.
When playing any piece of music using pedalling it is usually very important to achieve a sustained effect without making the piece sound too muffled, so it’s a good idea to practice just playing the left-hand part whilst using the pedal and listening to hear if you can achieve a clear sustained but clear sound.
Unusually for exam pieces, REPEATS ARE REQUIRED IN THIS PIECE! Be careful to play the repeat on bar 1 as pp (very soft) instead of p (soft) when playing for the second time. This only applies to the opening three bars, and then all of the following dynamic markings apply.
