00:00One year on from the deadly Bondi Junction stabbing attack and the pain still remains.
00:10At a sombre ceremony today, a temporary memorial was unveiled to honour the six people killed on April 13, 2024.
00:20It's a very sad moment for us, but we are here and we are proud of our brother.
00:27He tried to save the humanity, so we want to keep his name alive, so we kept his name on our hearts.
00:34It's a tough day, it's really, really hard, but with support of New South Wales government and police and the community,
00:44it's making it much more easier to handle this day.
00:50Inspector Amy Scott shot and killed Joel Couchy, ending his rampage.
00:56Today, she paid her respects to the victims alongside the police commissioner.
01:01She's a very brave person. We appreciate what she did.
01:05She stopped this terrible thing, what was going on, and she saved many, many lives.
01:10Leaders from all levels of government also lay tributes.
01:14I spoke to some people who said this is the first time they've been back here,
01:17and I think it is really important to mark this because I think this is part of grieving and part of trying to manage and deal with what has happened.
01:26In the weeks after the attack, the Premier announced a permanent memorial.
01:31He says that hasn't been forgotten.
01:33That will definitely take place, but you'd appreciate we need to do that with the families.
01:38We want to make sure that it's appropriate.
01:40As the community continues to grieve, authorities are preparing for a five-week coronial inquest scheduled to start later this month.
01:48That will examine a number of things, including the coordination of the emergency response on the day
01:53and potential failings in the mental health system in the lead up to the attack.
01:58We've also got major inquiries that are taking place in Sydney and in New South Wales
02:02so that we can learn the lessons and do whatever we can to ensure that more families don't go through the pain
02:09that these six families have gone through and those that were injured or came to the rescue.
02:13We've obviously got the coroner's matter coming up, which will be confronting for a lot of people,
02:19but certainly a day that first responders from wherever they came from will never forget.
02:25A painful memory, now a dark mark in the city's history.
