Bill et Stan, deux étudiants en route pour Los Angeles, arrivent dans un petit village de l'Alabama. Là, ils sont immédiatement arrêtés et jetés en prison, accusés de meurtre. Abasourdis, les deux jeunes gens font tout de suite appel au cousin de Bill, Vinny, un avocat novice qui parle comme un charretier. Le juge local, le colérique Chamberlain Haller, manifeste quelque agacement. Mona Lisa, la fiancée de Vinny, affligée par les bourdes commises par son héros, n'est pas loin de partager ses réserves. L'affaire risque de ne pas se dérouler au goût de Bill et Stan. Les deux étudiants craignent que leur avocat ne leur nuise sans le vouloir...
