00:00:00It's me, Ali Mabano. We've been communicating over text message. I'm the graduate assistant here.
00:00:06Yes, hi, Elliot.
00:00:07Welcome to Carbondale, or I guess welcome back, right? Because you went here, right? Obviously, that's why you're here.
00:00:14Yeah.
00:00:15I'm here for whatever you need this weekend. Tour guide, chauffeur, general, companionship, and I have your itinerary printed out right here.
00:00:23Oh, great, great.
00:00:24I'm a big fan of yours. I bought your book. I haven't read it yet, but I will.
00:00:30Oh, cool. Thanks for buying it.
00:00:31I thought it would be awkward if I didn't.
00:00:34Yeah, yeah, I guess.
00:00:35Oh, this is me. I'm going to take you to the bed and breakfast first, if that's okay.
00:00:40Sure.
00:00:41Great, great.
00:00:46Oh, thank you.
00:00:48Oh, I got it.
00:00:49You sure?
00:00:50Yeah.
00:00:51You good?
00:00:52Yes.
00:00:54Okay.
00:01:24Oh, man. That was my old house.
00:01:28Yeah?
00:01:40I kind of remember this place.
00:01:42Yeah?
00:01:55Okay. You're here.
00:02:01Come on. I'll show you your room.
00:02:11Wow. This place is perfect.
00:02:14Fresh towels in the bathroom. There's an extra blanket in case you get cold. Breakfast at 9 a.m.
00:02:20Oh, wow. I didn't expect there to actually be breakfast. I'm not really a breakfast person.
00:02:26What did you think bed and breakfast meant?
00:02:29I thought it was more like an Airbnb.
00:02:34Here are your keys. It's the only set you're going to get, so you better wear them around your neck.
00:02:38Got it.
00:02:39Got it.
00:02:46Well, I'll leave you to it. I'll be back in a little bit to pick you up for the reading.
00:02:53Unless you want me to stay.
00:02:56Oh, no. I'm fine.
00:02:58Oh, of course.
00:02:59Thank you so much, Elliot. Bye.
00:03:06Oh, my gosh.
00:03:10Oh, my gosh.
00:03:14Hey, you're wearing the same blazer.
00:03:17Yeah.
00:03:20Ready?
00:03:30And here we are.
00:03:33Oh, wow.
00:03:35Kate.
00:03:37I'm going to go sit up closer. Hello.
00:03:39David.
00:03:40Wow.
00:03:41Hi.
00:03:42Welcome back.
00:03:44It's great to see you.
00:03:45It's good to see you.
00:03:46Thank you for having me. I was so excited to hear you're still teaching.
00:03:49Yeah, I'm still at it. Hopefully, I'm better at this whole professor thing than when you were in my class.
00:03:54Come on. You blew everyone away that first year. You were this young writer who came out of nowhere. You were so enthusiastic.
00:04:01Well, I'm older now, but thanks, Kate. That's such a big compliment. Thank you.
00:04:05Hi.
00:04:06Hi.
00:04:07Oh, hey, Alexis.
00:04:08Oh, Kate. This is my wife, Alexis.
00:04:12You have a wife?
00:04:13I do. I got one about five years ago.
00:04:17Well, it is so nice to meet you.
00:04:19So nice to meet you. David talks about you all the time.
00:04:22Oh, really?
00:04:23No, not all the time. Not all the time.
00:04:27Hello, everyone. We're about to get started.
00:04:29I'm going to go find a seat.
00:04:31Nice to meet you.
00:04:32Nice to meet you.
00:04:33Not all the time.
00:04:37My name is April Havaini. I'm this year's student editor of the Crab Orchard Review, our literary magazine.
00:04:47Kate, let's get a drink later, yeah?
00:04:49Yeah.
00:04:50Oh, wow. I love this, by the way. Very cool.
00:04:56We'll be introducing tonight's author. Please welcome Professor Kirkpatrick.
00:05:04Well, and everyone, big thanks, April, for organizing this evening.
00:05:10I'm going to pause. Yeah, I'm going to pause.
00:05:12Tonight's author comes to us all the way from Chicago and has just published her first novel.
00:05:18She also happens to be one of my former students, although I do seem to remember you falling asleep during one of my lectures, Kate.
00:05:31And now we have the pleasure of hearing an excerpt from her novel, Seasons Past.
00:05:36Please welcome Kate Conklin.
00:05:49Wow. Thank you, everyone.
00:05:53It is such a pleasure to be back here, and I'm so excited to share my book with you.
00:05:58It just came out.
00:06:01Oh, thank you.
00:06:04Yeah, I'm pretty proud of it, even though I don't love the cover.
00:06:13Let's get into it.
00:06:18But this morning felt different. The clouds seemed to be moving faster than he had ever noticed before.
00:06:24Oh, wait. Sorry. Just for context, this is when the main character, Calvin, meets his love interest, Willoughby.
00:06:34But this morning felt different. The clouds seemed to be moving faster than he had ever noticed before.
00:06:40Faster than he thought maybe he'd ever seen.
00:06:43And the sun was so bright that as he walked along the familiar shore, it felt as though he was walking under a strobe light, pulsing almost as often as the cold waves licked his toes.
00:06:56And just then, as he took note of all that, he started out toward the mossy rock and found that it was occupied.
00:07:08Yeah! The students adored you.
00:07:11Shut up.
00:07:12I will not shut up, and I will never shut up. I was surprised they weren't asking for autographs.
00:07:16Well, a few of them did ask for my personal emails.
00:07:19Oh, wow. Your personal email address. Even better.
00:07:26Alexis didn't like it.
00:07:29That's not true.
00:07:30She's become quite the critic since marrying me.
00:07:34I had a hard time connecting, is all I said.
00:07:37Oh, it's okay. It's not for everyone.
00:07:43I thought it was fantastic.
00:07:46Well, on that awkward note, I'm going to use the restroom.
00:07:50No, it's okay. I actually just have to go.
00:07:53Asshole.
00:08:01Well, that's just a cute little name she has for me.
00:08:04For when you're being an asshole.
00:08:05For when I'm being an asshole.
00:08:09So, what's next?
00:08:11Well, I'm going to go to the library.
00:08:13You're going to the library?
00:08:14Yeah.
00:08:15You're going to the library?
00:08:16Yeah.
00:08:17You're going to the library?
00:08:18Yeah.
00:08:19You're going to the library?
00:08:20Yeah.
00:08:21So, what's next for you, Ms. Conklin?
00:08:25Tell me all of your plans.
00:08:26Ugh.
00:08:27Uh, well, I'm in sort of limbo right now.
00:08:32I'm writing some.
00:08:33Good.
00:08:35How's your book doing?
00:08:36Um, well, not as good as I would have hoped.
00:08:41I guess the sales are sort of low.
00:08:45I cancelled my book tour.
00:08:48Well, I'm glad we got you down here, then.
00:08:51Yeah, me too.
00:08:55Listen, Kate, I wanted to ask you something.
00:08:58Um, what would you think about teaching here?
00:09:04Teaching here?
00:09:05Teaching here.
00:09:07Teaching here.
00:09:08Mm-hmm.
00:09:09We just formed a search committee to hire someone for the fall, and I immediately thought of you.
00:09:15Oh.
00:09:16Um, well, I don't even have an MFA.
00:09:18That's something I think the committee could look past for a published alum.
00:09:27It would be nice to have you here again, Kate.
00:09:37Bye! Thanks again!
00:09:45Bye!
00:09:56Oh, shit.
00:10:02Oh, okay.
00:10:16Oh, shit.
00:10:27Oh, my God.
00:10:30I am so sorry. I did not mean to wake you up.
00:10:33I, I can't find my keys.
00:10:36I did have it around my neck, but I'm going to be honest, it was a little embarrassing, so I put it in my bag, and now I, I will, I, I will pay for more keys.
00:10:44I am so sorry.
00:10:50Okay.
00:11:00What up?
00:11:01Laura, guess where I am?
00:11:04Where?
00:11:05In Carbondale.
00:11:07On your book tour?
00:11:09Uh, not exactly. David Kirkpatrick brought me down to do a reading.
00:11:13Whoa, I haven't thought about that dude in a while.
00:11:17Remember how he used to be so into you?
00:11:19He was not. He's married now.
00:11:21Also, the point is, I'm in Carbondale.
00:11:24Wow, Carbondale.
00:11:26That's wild.
00:11:27And I'm staying at that bed and breakfast on our old street.
00:11:32Does it still smell like weed?
00:11:33Yes!
00:11:36Oh, my God, I love it here.
00:11:38I forgot how cozy this place is.
00:11:41Oh, my God.
00:11:42I am standing right in front of our old house.
00:11:45Man, I loved that house.
00:11:47We had all those, like, little Tibetan prayer flags everywhere.
00:11:50Actually, I'm realizing now that that was probably some fucked up cultural appropriation.
00:11:55Okay, I, I love you. I gotta go. Okay, goodbye.
00:11:57Okay, send me a pic of the house.
00:11:59Okay, I will. Bye, bye.
00:12:03This is Michael's voicemail. I won't listen to it, but I'll see that you called.
00:12:08Hey, Michael, it's Kate.
00:12:10Uh, I just missed a call from you.
00:12:12Um, I don't know if you're calling to get together or whatever,
00:12:16but I'm actually out of town, uh, on my book tour.
00:12:21So maybe we could get a drink when I'm back in town, right?
00:12:24Okay, so give me a call back.
00:12:26Okay, bye.
00:12:38Hey.
00:12:39Oh, hi.
00:12:41Um, sorry, I used to live here.
00:12:44Aren't you the visiting author?
00:12:47Yeah, I'm, I'm Kate.
00:12:49Hi.
00:12:50Hi, I'm staying right across the street.
00:12:52Cool, cool, yeah.
00:12:53I'm Animal.
00:12:57Did you want to see the old place, or?
00:12:59Yes.
00:13:01Yeah.
00:13:03That's Hugo.
00:13:06Hey.
00:13:07Hi.
00:13:08Kate used to live here.
00:13:10Really?
00:13:11Like, 15 years ago.
00:13:13Now she's like a super successful author.
00:13:16Cool.
00:13:17Well, I wouldn't say super.
00:13:19You wrote a book.
00:13:21She has a book.
00:13:22Hey, did they used to call this the Writer's Retreat back then?
00:13:24Do you guys still call it the Writer's Retreat?
00:13:27I named it the Writer's Retreat.
00:13:29Seriously?
00:13:30Yes!
00:13:31We were all creative writing majors.
00:13:33Man, you're like our forefathers.
00:13:38That's tall Brandon.
00:13:41Hey.
00:13:43Can I see my old room?
00:13:46I put those stars up there.
00:13:48Wow.
00:13:50I look at those.
00:13:52I used to look at them too.
00:13:55Man, I feel so far away from the person I was when I lived in this room.
00:14:00I can't wait to feel far away from this room.
00:14:03I remember that feeling too.
00:14:05Now you're back.
00:14:06Yes, I'm back at college.
00:14:10Do you know Professor Kirkpatrick?
00:14:11He's the one who invited me here.
00:14:13I don't have him, but my girlfriend's in his class.
00:14:15Oh, yeah, he's incredible.
00:14:17Yeah, he is.
00:14:18He's a great guy.
00:14:19Yeah, he is.
00:14:20Yeah, he is.
00:14:21Yeah, he is.
00:14:22Oh, yeah, he's incredible.
00:14:24I mean, he's pretty much the reason I'm a writer.
00:14:27Yeah, no, everyone seems to really like him.
00:14:30Hey.
00:14:35Do you still want to get the kegs?
00:14:38Well, Brandon, you want to maybe put some clothes on?
00:14:42I'm not fully dry yet.
00:14:47We're having a party tonight.
00:14:49We used to have incredible parties here.
00:14:52You should come.
00:14:53Yeah, maybe.
00:14:56♪
00:15:20Chris lunged at me with unimaginable speed
00:15:22and plunged his sword past my third arm directly...
00:15:26Carry on, Miley. You're doing great.
00:15:28...directly into my heart.
00:15:31Strangely, as I began bleeding to death in the middle of the park,
00:15:34all I could think about was whether this was the fastest that anyone had ever died in sword combat.
00:15:40I was torn about it.
00:15:41On the one hand, it didn't seem like anyone could have ever died faster,
00:15:44but then again, whenever you think something like that,
00:15:46there's always someone ready to defy your expectation.
00:15:49Oh, wow. Well, much improved.
00:15:52Much improved.
00:15:54OK, Miley, I have one small, small note.
00:15:56I think you know what it is. I want you to chop off the beginning.
00:15:59First page, gone.
00:16:01OK. Yeah.
00:16:02I know it's difficult, but we should just be in it.
00:16:05Yeah. Thank you.
00:16:06Be in it already.
00:16:08All right, so you may have noticed that we have a visitor.
00:16:13Some of you were in a reading last night,
00:16:15and for those of you who were not, this is Kate Conklin.
00:16:18It may interest you to know that long ago in ancient history,
00:16:21Kate was in my very first class ever as a professor.
00:16:26And I think that year I was younger than you are now, if you can believe it.
00:16:30I can't.
00:16:31No, it does seem unbelievable.
00:16:33All right, well, Miss Conklin is here to observe,
00:16:35so let's give her something to observe. Who's up next?
00:16:38I'll go.
00:16:39April, fantastic.
00:16:49This is called duvet.
00:16:54I imagine you stepping into this stream,
00:16:57wearing your own body and saying, what the fuck?
00:17:00Like you already know what the fuck.
00:17:04I don't mean to sound crass,
00:17:05but where your teeth meet my flesh is a pressure point.
00:17:09I go limp when out buying groceries.
00:17:13The burning orange chicken in your beard
00:17:15smells like a pesticide, and it kills me.
00:17:20Tired now, I unbutton your skin and slip inside
00:17:24where everything is white,
00:17:27and only I exist.
00:17:35I lost a bunch of library books,
00:17:36and I didn't know if that would affect my grade.
00:17:39That's something you'd like to talk about with the library.
00:17:43About with the library?
00:17:44Yeah.
00:17:45Yeah.
00:17:46Okay.
00:17:48Thanks for coming. Did you enjoy it?
00:17:49Oh, oh my gosh, yeah, I loved it.
00:17:52Oh, okay.
00:17:53Well, it's actually my office hours now,
00:17:56so I can't hang out, but...
00:17:58Oh, yeah, of course.
00:18:00But I was thinking, perhaps we could get dinner tomorrow, you know?
00:18:04Yes.
00:18:05Okay, great.
00:18:06Yeah, with Alexis?
00:18:08Oh.
00:18:10No, she'll be out of town.
00:18:13Oh.
00:18:14In Kentucky.
00:18:15Bummer.
00:18:16Visiting her sister.
00:18:17Cool.
00:18:18Yeah, but you and me, yeah?
00:18:19Yeah.
00:18:20Thank you again for having me.
00:18:22Thank you for being happy.
00:18:26Sorry.
00:18:28It's inappropriate, can't it be?
00:18:29No, no.
00:18:30I'm not allowed to say this, because I think it would be more right, but I'll see for it.
00:18:34Yes.
00:18:35Okay, great.
00:18:36Okay.
00:18:37Oh, that's your turn.
00:18:38Okay.
00:18:43Okay.
00:19:01Kate Conklin.
00:19:03It's me.
00:19:04It's Brad.
00:19:05Brad.
00:19:07Oh, my God, Bradley Cooper.
00:19:09Hi.
00:19:10Oh, my.
00:19:11You're like a man now.
00:19:13Oh, thanks.
00:19:14Thank you, too.
00:19:15I mean, a woman, I mean.
00:19:17Wow.
00:19:18Bradley Cooper.
00:19:19Crazy.
00:19:20It's been so long.
00:19:21Yeah.
00:19:22I actually just go by Brad now.
00:19:24Really?
00:19:25Yeah.
00:19:27So, what are you doing here?
00:19:29Oh, right.
00:19:30Oh, I'm just in town for a few days.
00:19:32The university brought me down to do a reading from my new book.
00:19:35No way.
00:19:36You actually became a writer?
00:19:37That's so cool.
00:19:38Yeah, I guess it is.
00:19:42Yay.
00:19:48Oh, my God.
00:19:49What fun thing are you doing right now?
00:19:51You're never going to fucking believe who I'm getting drinks with.
00:19:54Who?
00:19:55Bradley Cooper.
00:19:56From Smith Hall?
00:19:58Yes, except for he's like really cool now.
00:20:01Do you remember when we saw him crying?
00:20:04Oh, my God.
00:20:05Yes.
00:20:06In the Jimmy Johns.
00:20:07You should sneak me a pic of him.
00:20:08No, I'm not doing that.
00:20:10Come on.
00:20:11I want to see him.
00:20:12No, you always make me do that and I always get caught.
00:20:15I want to see him, Kate.
00:20:17Come on.
00:20:18No.
00:20:19No, I'm not doing it.
00:20:20Not doing it.
00:20:21Not doing it.
00:20:22I got to go.
00:20:23I'm here.
00:20:24I love you.
00:20:25Goodbye.
00:20:26I got to go.
00:20:27I love you.
00:20:28I got a pitcher of beer coming.
00:20:30I hope that's okay.
00:20:31I took the liberty of choosing.
00:20:32Oh, yeah.
00:20:33That's fine.
00:20:34Sorry.
00:20:35This is a work thing.
00:20:36I have to answer this real quick.
00:20:38I'm sorry.
00:20:40Okay.
00:20:49Oh, what was that?
00:20:51Oh, God.
00:20:52My phone just keeps flashing.

00:47:56Really? I wonder where.
00:47:59I know where he lives.
00:48:01Should we go over there?
00:48:06We can just go see if her car is there or something.
00:48:09And what?
00:48:10Then we'll know.
00:48:12Can you get Chloe's car again?
00:48:14Oh, shit. No. She's using it tonight.
00:48:21I think I know someone who can drive.
00:48:27Hey, guys.
00:48:35Where are we off to?
00:48:38Right here.
00:48:40Babe!
00:48:41You know the exact address?
00:48:43It's my mom's house. Who's behind her?
00:48:45Oh, crazy.
00:48:51Brandon, what are you doing?
00:48:53I'm about to become prepared, man.
00:48:55Dude, take off the ski mask.
00:48:57No way.
00:48:58Thanks for coming, Elliot.
00:49:00I'm glad I caught you before you went to bed.
00:49:02Oh, I was already sleeping.
00:49:04I took an Ambien, so I was out.
00:49:07You're on Ambien right now?
00:49:09Are you sure you're not too tired to drive?
00:49:11Oh, yeah. No problem.
00:49:13I'll sleep when I'm dead. Am I right?
00:49:21All right!
00:49:41Hold on, hold on. Someone's parking.
00:49:44I don't like to turn off your lights.
00:49:51Is that him?
00:49:54It's totally him.
00:49:56He's got someone with him.
00:49:58Should I take a picture?
00:50:00Oh, my God. Is that April?
00:50:03I can't tell.
00:50:06I can't really see her.
00:50:08You said your mom lives right behind him, right?
00:50:11Think we could see anything from the back?
00:50:14Probably.
00:50:16So, drive?
00:50:18Elliot, drive.
00:50:25Wait, I thought you were from St. Louis.
00:50:27I am. My mom moved here after my parents got divorced.
00:50:34Why?
00:50:35I don't know, man.
00:50:37She just wanted to be close to me.
00:50:41Well, how come you never see her, then?
00:50:43I don't know, man.
00:50:45I feel like hanging out with my mom all the time.
00:50:49What?
00:50:50Hey, that's it right there.
00:50:52No, no, wait, wait. Go to the street.
00:50:54I don't want her to see us.
00:50:56Jeez, man, get a handle on your relationship.
00:50:58Shut the fuck up, Brandon.
00:51:00Just saying.
00:51:01Okay, this is good.
00:51:03Let's go.
00:51:04Okay.
00:51:05All right?
00:51:07Elliot, I think you should stay here with the car.
00:51:11I'll call you if anything goes down, okay?
00:51:13Okay.
00:51:14I might take a small nap.
00:51:22Okay.
00:51:23Brandon, would you take off the ski mask?
00:51:26No, I like it.
00:51:29Would you?
00:51:31Come on, that's mine.
00:51:33Why would you bring this anyway?
00:51:35We all have cameras on our phones.
00:51:36Are you kidding me?
00:51:37Do you think anyone believes anything taken digitally anymore?
00:51:40This offers analog proof.
00:51:43Oh, my God, why did it do that?
00:51:46It's motion activated.
00:51:51That's all, Brandon, you're so adorable.
00:51:53Man, will you shut up?
00:52:00That's a really tall fence.
00:52:03It was a lot shorter in my mind.
00:52:06Come on, boost me over.
00:52:08Hey, don't be careful.
00:52:10Brandon, calm down.
00:52:12I feel like he's gonna hurt his hands.
00:52:14I got it.
00:52:18Okay, you ready?
00:52:22Uh, guys?
00:52:24I don't know.
00:52:25I'm doing it, I'm doing it.
00:52:27You got this.
00:52:31I got a real bad feeling about this.
00:52:37Oh, shit, someone's coming.
00:52:39Come on, come on.
00:52:41I think that was my first time climbing a fence.
00:52:44He's got it, man.
00:52:46Good job, Hugo.
00:52:48Hell, yeah.
00:52:52Is someone out here?
00:52:54Fuck me, it's my mom.
00:52:56Wait, what about tall Brandon?
00:52:59Oh, my God, there's no one to boost me over.
00:53:03Hello?
00:53:04This was very poorly planned.
00:53:06I feel totally abandoned right now.
00:53:08Come on, we gotta go.
00:53:12Hey, you can be our lookout, okay?
00:53:14Yeah, let's go.
00:53:15Okay.
00:53:17I know you're out here.
00:53:21You better show yourself up.
00:53:22I'm calling the police.
00:53:30Should we talk about a plan?
00:53:31Ooh, that's a great idea.
00:53:33Okay, I feel like we should figure out if it's April 1st, right?
00:53:36Yes.
00:53:37I really feel like it's her, though.
00:53:38I really feel like it's her, too.
00:53:40We have to be sure.
00:53:42Down, down, down.
00:53:48Let's go.
00:53:53So, you're Hugo's friend?
00:53:56I am, yes.
00:53:59Actually, we're more roommates than friends, I would say.
00:54:04And you thought he would be here?
00:54:07I mean, in my house?
00:54:10In my backyard?
00:54:16Honestly, I just can't think of a good lie here.
00:54:23You wanna see something?
00:54:27Yeah.
00:54:29A lot of people just have the stickers.
00:54:33If we hear an alarm, we'll just run away.
00:54:36Okay?
00:54:38Alright.
00:54:58This is starting to feel fucking weird.
00:55:01We're in this dude's house.
00:55:02It's fine.
00:55:04Tell Brandon to look out now.
00:55:06If anything goes wrong, we'll call him.
00:55:16This is the craziest shit I've ever seen.
00:55:18Wait, wait, hold on. Here it goes.
00:55:21Watch the guy in the middle.
00:55:25Watch that.
00:55:27He's gonna do it again.
00:55:28I can't stand it.
00:55:36I can't.
00:55:38Oh, my God.
00:55:40Let me see another one of these things.
00:55:53This floor is fucking squeaky.
00:55:57Let's go.
00:56:07Let's use the stairs.
00:56:09I'm gonna go up there.
00:56:10We should all go up.
00:56:11What are we gonna do up there?
00:56:13I'll bring his friends up.
00:56:17Kate, come on.
00:56:28Shh, shh, shh.
00:56:30Wait.
00:56:33Wait, just wait.
00:56:43Let's go.
00:56:46Come on, let's go, let's go.
00:56:57Should we go in there?
00:56:59What are we supposed to do when we go in there?
00:57:01I don't know how to work this thing.
00:57:03You just press the button.
00:57:05Just press the button and I'm right there.
00:57:07Where's the button?
00:57:08It's right there, right there.
00:57:19Get the fuck out of here.
00:57:21What is this?
00:57:22What are you doing?
00:57:23What are you doing?
00:57:24Who is this?
00:57:26It's my boyfriend.
00:57:27What?
00:57:28Jesus Christ.
00:57:30What the hell?
00:57:31Kate.
00:57:32Kate, what are you doing here?
00:57:34Oh, wow.
00:57:40I'm sorry.
00:57:44Stop doing that.
00:57:45Come on, man.
00:57:46And Hugo.
00:57:48Cameraman.
00:57:49Yeah.
00:57:50It's EMR, isn't it?
00:57:52Yeah.
00:57:54April, I know you like peppermint.
00:57:57Kate, can I speak with you for a moment, please, in the other room?
00:58:04Excuse me.
00:58:19What the hell is going on?
00:58:22Can you please explain to me what you were doing?
00:58:25Why don't you tell me what the hell you're doing?
00:58:27I can't believe I walked in on that.
00:58:29Walked in?
00:58:30You broke in.
00:58:31You broke into my house.
00:58:33And as for what I was doing, honestly, that's none of your business.
00:58:37Well, what about your wife?
00:58:38Is it her business?
00:58:39You are married, David.
00:58:41Alexis and I have an understanding.
00:58:44Oh, is that why you waited until she was in Kentucky visiting her sister before inviting a student into your bed?
00:58:50Yes, because she's not in Kentucky visiting her sister.
00:58:53She's in Kentucky fucking her ex-husband.
00:58:55Well, that sounds complicated.
00:58:57It is!
00:59:02Well, I guess you care about policy less than you used to.
00:59:07Hmm?
00:59:10My senior year, I came over to your house for a reading and I tried to kiss you.
00:59:17And then you just quoted the faculty handbook.
00:59:20Oh, yeah, right.
00:59:23Well, I was a new hire.
00:59:27I don't know, it just, it felt uneven.
00:59:30Well, what about April?
00:59:31If there's anything uneven in my relationship with April, it's the other way around, believe me.
00:59:36Oh, fuck off!
00:59:39All right, I may have had a minor lapse in professional judgment.
00:59:43But I don't want this to affect you and me, Kate.
00:59:46Your friendship means the world to me.
00:59:51Did you even read my book?
00:59:53Of course.
00:59:55David, I saw it on your shelf.
00:59:58It looks like no one even cracked it open.
01:00:02I have another copy in my office that's just a hard copy.
01:00:07That sounds like a lie.
01:00:10All right, I don't have time to read every fucking thing.
01:00:13Everybody I know writes, okay?
01:00:15I have student work to read on a constant basis.
01:00:18It's never ending, honestly.
01:00:20And I'm busy!
01:00:25Okay.
01:00:27You're a dick.
01:00:30Come on.
01:00:31No, I get it now.
01:00:32You're a dick.
01:00:40Katie, I'm sorry I didn't read your book.
01:00:44I will get to it.
01:00:47But I was there during your reading, and I thought it sounded so good.
01:00:52The, you know, Willoughby.
01:00:55And the incident on the rock.
01:00:59Very strong, clear imagery.
01:01:01Shut up!
01:01:03Shut up!
01:01:07Though I would still like to recommend you for that position here next year.
01:01:11I would love to work with you.
01:01:18Thanks, but I don't think so.
01:01:34Shit.
01:01:36We forgot about tall Brandon.
01:01:41Oh my God.
01:01:43It's looking so good.
01:01:45Should we take it out?
01:01:47Do you think it's time?
01:01:49I do.
01:01:51Okay.
01:01:56Don't fall.
01:01:57Don't fall.
01:01:58Don't fall.
01:01:59Don't fall.
01:02:00Don't fall.
01:02:01Don't fall.
01:02:02Don't fall.
01:02:04Don't fall.
01:02:13It happens.
01:02:16We can still eat it though, right?
01:02:18Of course.
01:02:19Oh yeah, baby.
01:02:21He's not answering.
01:02:24Maybe he went home.
01:02:29He's asleep.
01:02:30Wait.
01:02:31Elliot!
01:02:36Where is he going?
01:02:38I don't know.
01:02:44Sorry.
01:02:46Sorry, everyone.
01:02:48It's okay, Elliot.
01:02:49You can just take us home.
01:02:54Oh, Brandon, did you go home?
01:02:55Where are you?
01:02:58Nowhere.
01:02:59Tell me where you are, tall Brandon.
01:03:02I'm where you left me.
01:03:04Get your ass out front.
01:03:11I think I have to go.
01:03:13It's a shame.
01:03:15I know.
01:03:16I've had such a fun time.
01:03:18Well, you just have to come back.
01:03:21Can I?
01:03:26I'm Jen, by the way.
01:03:28Brandon.
01:03:30Just Brandon.
01:03:54Hey.
01:03:58Hey.
01:04:06I just had the greatest night of my life.
01:04:29Going in?
01:04:31Yeah.
01:04:32I think I'm on the couch again tonight.
01:04:35No, no.
01:04:36You can sleep in my bed.
01:04:37I'll take the couch.
01:04:38Oh, no, no.
01:04:39You don't have to do that.
01:04:40Well, technically, it is your room.
01:04:44Technically, that's true.
01:04:46All right.
01:04:47So you're taking your room.
01:04:48Wow.
01:04:51Here you go.
01:04:52Oh.
01:04:54Thanks.
01:05:01She loved those photos.
01:05:04I'm sorry.
01:05:10I'm sorry.
01:05:12I'm sorry.
01:05:14I'm sorry.
01:05:16I'm sorry.
01:05:17I'm sorry.
01:05:18I'm sorry.
01:05:26What happened with you?
01:05:29And your boyfriend?
01:05:35You mean my fiancé?
01:05:37Fiancé.
01:05:40Damn.
01:05:41Yeah.
01:05:44Nothing happened.
01:05:46I mean, nothing dramatic.
01:05:48I mean, I just knew I didn't want to marry him.
01:05:52And I knew it when he proposed to me.
01:05:56And I knew it when I told my parents and when we picked out a caterer and DJ and all of that stuff.
01:06:08And I was just, you know, too much of a coward to do anything about it.
01:06:16So, finally, he broke up with me.
01:06:23And now he's with someone else.
01:06:30She seems great.
01:06:32So that's nice.
01:06:34And my book is doing so bad.
01:06:45And the one person who told me that he liked it didn't even fucking read it.
01:06:55You know that story of yours that I said I read about your brother?
01:07:00Let me guess, you didn't read it.
01:07:03I read it.
01:07:05And it was really good.
01:07:11Yeah.
01:07:12Yeah, it was.
01:07:17And it was really fucking sad.
01:07:23Yeah.
01:07:25It was.
01:07:34Yeah.
01:07:47Can I play you a song?
01:07:49No.
01:08:03No.
01:08:04Yes.
01:08:06Lately you've made me feel like king.
01:08:19Wish I could have you all the more trips in my blood.
01:08:27All the things that have always brought me down.
01:08:31You know, I've been thinking.
01:08:36Just because a connection with a person doesn't last forever.
01:08:48Doesn't mean it's not real.
01:08:52Yeah?
01:08:57Yeah, I think that's true.
01:09:06Wish I could have you all the more trips in my blood.
01:09:16All the things that have always brought me down.
01:09:24This new drugs help me, help me not need, not need love.
01:09:35This new drugs help me, help me not need, not need love.
01:09:45This new drugs help me, help me not need, not need love.
01:09:57This new drugs help me, help me not need, not need love.
01:10:05This new drugs help me, help me not need, not need love.
01:10:35Hi.
01:10:54Hi.
01:10:58Hi.
01:11:01Did you sleep here?
01:11:03Is that Hugo's shirt?
01:11:06My God.
01:11:08I can't believe this.
01:11:09You are such a hypocrite.
01:11:11Well, I don't...
01:11:12Do you know how embarrassing that was for me last night?
01:11:15It was humiliating.
01:11:17And now you're doing like the same fucking thing?
01:11:19Well, it's not exactly the same thing.
01:11:23But it is a very similar thing.
01:11:25God, you know what really sucks?
01:11:28I was really looking forward to meeting you.
01:11:31And you weren't even nice.
01:11:33And your book?
01:11:35You know what? Your book is just...
01:11:37I know my book sucks.
01:11:40All right? I know.
01:11:43How do you think that feels?
01:11:44I didn't want to write a shitty book.
01:11:47Why did you?
01:11:48I don't know. I'm not good enough to write a good book, I guess.
01:11:50Or I was...
01:11:53Life is not like school, all right?
01:11:55It's not like a safe place to try things out.
01:11:57And I was afraid to fail.
01:11:59And then I did fail.
01:12:01And...
01:12:05Now I feel pretty fucking stupid.
01:12:13But...
01:12:15I'm sorry I wasn't more encouraging when we met.
01:12:17Because I...
01:12:21I think I'm just jealous of you.
01:12:23What?
01:12:24It's all like possibility for you.
01:12:27And I've already fucked up.
01:12:33I know I'm probably the last person you ever want to see.
01:12:35But if there's anything I can ever do to help you...
01:12:40Thanks.
01:12:42Checking out?
01:12:44Uh, no.
01:12:46I, uh...
01:12:48I was just hoping for some breakfast.
01:12:53Oh.
01:12:58This looks amazing.
01:13:00Coffee?
01:13:02No, thanks.
01:13:03I'm good.
01:13:04I'm good.
01:13:05I'm good.
01:13:06I'm good.
01:13:07I'm good.
01:13:08I'm good.
01:13:09I'm good.
01:13:10Coffee?
01:13:11Yes, please.
01:13:17Thank you so much.
01:13:25Mmm.
01:13:27Oh.
01:13:38Hey, I'm sorry I missed your calls.
01:13:40It's been like a crazy 24 hours.
01:13:43Hey.
01:13:45It's okay.
01:13:46Are you alright?
01:13:47Well...
01:13:49I mean, I don't know.
01:13:50I guess I'm like...
01:13:52In labor?
01:13:53What?
01:13:54Already?
01:13:55Isn't this, like, really early?
01:13:57Yeah.
01:13:58Three weeks.
01:13:59Um, but they think it's okay.
01:14:01They told me not to come in until my contractions get worse.
01:14:05So...
01:14:06Where's Matt?
