00:00:30And just have fun!
00:00:51There are no rights or wrongs in art.
00:00:54There are no mistakes.
00:00:56There's no end goal or perfect finished product.
00:01:02What we're trying to do here is just take what's in your heart and put it on the canvas.
00:01:07Miss Jamie?
00:01:08Yes, Lizzie?
00:01:09How do we know what's in our hearts?
00:01:12Oh.
00:01:13Well, we don't always know.
00:01:15But that's why we're here, right?
00:01:19To figure it out.
00:01:42So what do you think?
00:01:46I think it's amazing.
00:01:48We could build out multiple rooms.
00:01:50We could do reception, the galleries, so we could have art shows and community events.
00:01:55I mean, I think it's perfect.
00:01:57And this is just our second location.
00:01:59Wait till you see what I'm planning for our third and fourth.
00:02:02You are so excited!
00:02:03I am!
00:02:04This is what I love to do.
00:02:05I spend my life building businesses.
00:02:08You all know this past year of retirement has been hard on me.
00:02:12Hard on all of us.
00:02:14This is a dream come true.
00:02:15Jamie needs help expanding Canvas Creations and I need to be working again and you get
00:02:19me out of the house.
00:02:21Okay?
00:02:22Yes.
00:02:23How do we make this a reality?
00:02:26Let's talk terms.
00:02:27Okay.
00:02:29Have I told you in the last five minutes how much I love you?
00:02:42No, not in the last five minutes.
00:02:45Should I come back later?
00:02:47No, we'll stop.
00:02:49It's not our fault.
00:02:50Spring is in the air.
00:02:51Yeah, which would be a great excuse, except you guys were like this last winter, and summer,
00:02:55and fall.
00:02:56I gotta go.
00:02:57Sugar?
00:02:58Bye.
00:02:59Bye.
00:03:00Ooh, two more Qs.
00:03:01Here you go.
00:03:02Thanks.
00:03:03Well, maybe it's time to start dating again?
00:03:15It's been a year.
00:03:18Let's please just change the subject.
00:03:22And speaking of subject change, I just toured a space that would be perfect for the second
00:03:29Canvas Creation.
00:03:30That's great, but Canvas Creations was supposed to be the thing you did on the side of painting
00:03:35and if you expand, you're not gonna have time to paint or submit to showcases and exhibitions,
00:03:43which brings me to my exciting news.
00:03:45I just learned that with three weeks till the Cherry Blossom Arts Festival, the festival
00:03:49lost its usual venue of the Windsor Manor and is switching to the Botanical Gardens.
00:03:53Oh, that is very exciting.
00:03:55Which means that as head and sole employee of the Special Events Permitting Office, I'm
00:04:00gonna be working directly with the organizers of the Arts Festival.
00:04:03I could put in a good word for you.
00:04:06For your submission for the Emerging Artist Showcase.
00:04:09That's very sweet.
00:04:10And I do appreciate your meddling.
00:04:13But I didn't submit.
00:04:15What?
00:04:16Why not?
00:04:17Because I'm not painting and I haven't been in almost a year.
00:04:21And even if I was painting, every year I submit to the festival and get rejected.
00:04:24I know it's hard, but you have to keep trying.
00:04:26You can't give up.
00:04:27I don't want to, but every year I watch another artist win the festival's prize.
00:04:33A solo show in Paris.
00:04:36My dream.
00:04:39And I'm happy for them.
00:04:40I mean, I really am.
00:04:41It's just starting to feel like it's never gonna happen for me.
00:04:47And this is my dream.
00:04:48But I don't know how to make it more than a dream.
00:04:54I've got an idea.
00:04:56Come.
00:05:01I'm back!
00:05:03Not that I'm complaining, because this is literally my favorite place on earth.
00:05:07But what are we doing here?
00:05:09We are getting you supplies.
00:05:10Ooh, for what exactly?
00:05:13I think you're already on almost everything in the store.
00:05:15We don't have poster board.
00:05:18And why do I need poster board?
00:05:19Ooh, for my sixth grade science project.
00:05:22Remember four years ago when I went through that rough patch and I hated my job working for the event planner and had no luck dating?
00:05:30I remember a lot of ice cream Sunday pity parties.
00:05:32They were delicious.
00:05:35And then I heard about that job at the special events permitting office.
00:05:39My dream job.
00:05:40And then I got it.
00:05:41And then about a month later, I met Tom.
00:05:43And I'm happy for you, but I'm just a little confused.
00:05:46How does that relate to poster board?
00:05:48It wasn't luck.
00:05:49It wasn't destiny.
00:05:51I made it happen with a vision board.
00:05:56I made that vision board, and then all my dreams came true.
00:06:00They came true because you took action and went after what you wanted.
00:06:04Not because you collaged.
00:06:05I took action because my vision board helped me realize what I wanted.
00:06:09Ava?
00:06:10No.
00:06:11Jamie?
00:06:12As an artist, I'm sure you'll agree that images are very powerful.
00:06:16And when you have a clear vision of what you want, you'll find a clear path to achieving it.
00:06:20Besides, what have you got to lose?
00:06:22My artistic dignity?
00:06:23We'll take everything.
00:06:25We're not taking any of it.
00:06:26Ooh, this too.
00:06:27No need to thank me.
00:06:28I wasn't going to.
00:06:29If you're walking me home to get those collaging supplies in my door...
00:06:33Actually, there's another reason I'm walking you home, and I'm sorry I waited until now to bring it up.
00:06:38Oh, you finally rented out your unit.
00:06:40That's what I wanted to talk to you about.
00:06:42I know it's sudden, but it just kind of happened overnight.
00:06:45Hey, neighbor.
00:06:46Please tell me your brother is not my new...
00:06:49I'm sorry.
00:06:50I know Max drives you crazy.
00:06:51But he doesn't drive me crazy.
00:06:53Okay, yeah, he drives me crazy.
00:06:57You know how much trouble I was having finding a sublet?
00:06:59And he never stays anywhere for long.
00:07:00He'll be gone before you know it.
00:07:02Promise?
00:07:03Hey.
00:07:10Okay.
00:07:13So, I thought you were in San Diego.
00:07:15Oh, that was last spring.
00:07:16I was in Tucson, and then Boise, and then Ava mentioned a temp job back here, and I thought, why not?
00:07:21Max got a job as a landscape architect.
00:07:23Groundskeeper.
00:07:25You got a master's degree in landscape architecture to then work as a groundskeeper of the botanical gardens?
00:07:30Where Jamie might be displaying her work next month at the Cherry Blossom Arts Festival, if she vision boards.
00:07:36Not only will I see you at the gardens, but I will see you at home, too.
00:07:40Would you believe it?
00:07:41Great big world, and we end up living right next to each other.
00:07:44I really can't believe it.
00:07:46Okay.
00:07:47Who knows?
00:07:48Maybe you'll even like having him as your neighbor.
00:07:50And if achieving your dreams isn't reason enough to vision board, you can always collage a picture of Max moving away.
00:07:56Well, that's reason enough for me.
00:07:58You need help with those?
00:07:59You know what?
00:08:00This is the last of it, and I'm tripling my Jamie.
00:08:03Thanks for helping me out.
00:08:07Ready?
00:08:08Let's go.
00:08:10Oh, yeah.
00:08:11All right.
00:08:12Good luck, you two.
00:08:14No matter how long it's been since I've seen you, you're still the same.
00:08:18It's like there's paint in your hair and everything.
00:08:20Well, I am a painter.
00:08:22That's what I love about you.
00:08:24You know, the paint.
00:08:27Right.
00:08:30Welcome home.
00:08:31Thanks, neighbor.
00:08:32Oh, if you ever want to come by for a beer, I micro-brew my own.
00:08:35Oh, that'd be great.
00:08:36Thanks.
00:08:37Thanks.
00:08:38Thanks.
00:08:39Thanks.
00:08:40Thanks.
00:08:41Thanks.
00:08:43I'll micro-brew my own.
00:08:44Oh, that is a tempting offer.
00:08:45I'll keep in mind.
00:08:50Yeah, I'll do the same.
00:09:06Yes.
00:09:07Hey, you forgot your...
00:09:09Clothing supplies.
00:09:10So, you are collaging.
00:09:14Not yet, but more and more I'm thinking about it.
00:09:19Thanks.
00:09:20Thanks.
00:09:51Hey, Dad.
00:09:52Hi, honey.
00:09:53The real estate agent just sent over the lease.
00:09:56We need to decide by the end of the week.
00:09:58Well, why wait?
00:10:00I mean, the space is exactly what we're looking for.
00:10:04That's fine.
00:10:05You don't want to give it a little bit more thought?
00:10:07No.
00:10:10Why?
00:10:11Are you having second thoughts?
00:10:13No.
00:10:14I'm certain I want to do this.
00:10:15I love building this out and getting to work with you,
00:10:19but I want to make sure you're sure.
00:10:22Well, I'm sure.
00:10:25I'll look over the lease now.
00:10:26Love you.
00:10:27Love you.
00:10:28Bye.
00:10:48Bye.
00:11:02Good morning.
00:11:03Morning.
00:11:04You going for a run?
00:11:05Yep.
00:11:06Me too.
00:11:09Have a great run.
00:11:12Jamie, call me crazy, but I'm starting to think that you're unhappy that we're neighbors.
00:11:18Did I do something to bother you?
00:11:21You mean besides a lifetime of pranks and jokes at my expense?
00:11:25Max, every time I'm around you, I get hurt or humiliated.
00:11:32Whoa, that is not fair.
00:11:34Okay, give me one example.
00:11:36Okay.
00:11:37Third grade.
00:11:38Okay.
00:11:40Third grade.
00:11:41You nicknamed me Jamie Smiley Man.
00:11:46We were kids.
00:11:47Which stuck with me through high school when you wrote me love letters for an entire year
00:11:51to prank me into thinking I had a secret admirer.
00:11:54That was...
00:11:55A joke?
00:11:56Oh, I know, Max.
00:11:57With you, everything's a joke.
00:11:59On me.
00:12:03Every time you're around me, you're teasing, you're immature.
00:12:06Sure.
00:12:07You're describing 15-year-old Max.
00:12:09We're adults now, so can we start over?
00:12:15Okay.
00:12:17Good.
00:12:18Running buddies?
00:12:21Fine.
00:12:23Good.
00:12:28Sorry.
00:12:30Yeah.
00:12:31Let's, uh...
00:12:32Can we try that again?
00:12:33Oh, yeah.
00:12:35Oh, you're painting.
00:12:36Are you working on any showcases or something?
00:12:38No, I'm not showing right now.
00:12:40Why not?
00:12:41Because I'm not painting right now.
00:12:43Okay.
00:12:44I opened an art school a year ago, and I'm focusing on that.
00:12:47Okay, well...
00:12:48What about your dating life?
00:12:49What happened there?
00:12:50You were dating someone that ended?
00:12:53Actually, I forgot something at home.
00:12:56I'll run back.
00:13:01So, how's it going with Max?
00:13:04Fine.
00:13:05Fine? Oh, not that bad.
00:13:07Worse?
00:13:08Well, remember, you can have anything you want.
00:13:10If you just...
00:13:11Please don't say vision board.
00:13:13Okay.
00:13:15Speaking of vision board, I brought mine.
00:13:17Eva!
00:13:18I just don't want you to give up on your dreams.
00:13:20Hey, what if I'm not giving up on my dreams?
00:13:22What if my dreams are just...
00:13:25changing?
00:13:26And what if they're not?
00:13:27Why don't you just vision board to double-check?
00:13:30Because I don't collage.
00:13:32And paint.
00:13:33I asked myself what I really wanted,
00:13:35then I made a board, and I focused on it every day,
00:13:37and it came true.
00:13:42And guess who I'm about to meet with?
00:13:43Who?
00:13:44The curator of the Cherry Blossom Arts Festival.
00:13:47I could put in a good word for the Emerging Artist Showcase.
00:13:51I've mentioned your relevance, right?
00:13:54Once or twice.
00:14:03Okay.
00:14:34Hi.
00:14:52Oh, Renee, it was so nice to meet you.
00:14:54And you too.
00:14:55It's so nice to put a face to a name.
00:14:57And thank you so much for expediting the permits.
00:15:00When we lost our venue,
00:15:02I didn't know what we were going to do.
00:15:04My pleasure.
00:15:05I know what the festival means to this town,
00:15:07and the Botanical Gardens is going to be a gorgeous venue.
00:15:11And so convenient.
00:15:12The Herman Arts Foundation is just down the street.
00:15:14York and 7.
00:15:16Oh.
00:15:17That's a block away from my best friend's art school.
00:15:20Canvas Creations.
00:15:21Funny enough, the head of the Herman Arts Foundation
00:15:23was thinking about stopping in and asking about painting lessons.
00:15:26Well, actually...
00:15:27Does your friend not do painting lessons?
00:15:29Oh, no, no, no.
00:15:30She does.
00:15:31But...
00:15:32Speaking of my friend...
00:15:38Oh, hi, Michael.
00:15:39I missed the meeting.
00:15:41Sorry.
00:15:42I'll fill you in.
00:15:43The permitting is taken care of,
00:15:45and everything is on schedule.
00:15:47Oh, and that art school down the street from us,
00:15:50the one that you were looking at for painting classes?
00:15:53Yeah.
00:15:54The teacher sounds great.
00:16:02Hey.
00:16:08Guess who has a private showing
00:16:10with the curator of the art festival?
00:16:13I'm hoping it's you.
00:16:15Renee is coming here on Thursday
00:16:17to review your work for the Emerging Artists Showcase.
00:16:19Oh, which would be great,
00:16:20except I have no work for her to review.
00:16:22What about the landscapes?
00:16:23I submitted all my best stuff last year.
00:16:25Wait.
00:16:26Your painting?
00:16:28Not exactly.
00:16:30Vision boarding?
00:16:33Show me.
00:16:35Now.
00:16:38Oh, Jamie.
00:16:41It's beautiful.
00:16:44Well, I thought about what I wanted,
00:16:46and this just came to me.
00:16:49It's after I win the showcase.
00:16:52My first solo show in Paris.
00:16:55This is an exhibit of my art in a colonnade,
00:16:58and this is the man I love
00:17:01bringing me a rose to congratulate me.
00:17:04In this moment, I have everything I've ever wanted.
00:17:10And although this may never happen,
00:17:13I have to say thank you.
00:17:17I'm painting again.
00:17:19I'm happy for you.
00:17:21Now finish it so it can happen,
00:17:24because you are about to make all your dreams come true.
00:17:39One final signature.
00:17:45And congratulations.
00:17:50Should we celebrate?
00:17:51I saw a donut shop down the street.
00:17:53We could review our notes for our meeting with the contractors.
00:17:55Do you mind if we do it tomorrow?
00:17:57I know, I know, we have so much to do,
00:18:00but I have class later, and I want to get some painting in.
00:18:06Ava got me a showing with the curator of the Cherry Blossoms Art Festival.
00:18:11That's wonderful.
00:18:12Honey, so you're painting again.
00:18:24Oh, hi.
00:18:25Hi.
00:18:27Am I too late to join the art class?
00:18:29Do you take drop-ins?
00:18:33Of course.
00:18:34Okay.
00:18:35Come on in.
00:18:36Thanks.
00:18:41They're all...
00:18:42Extremely talented artists?
00:18:44Yes, that too.
00:18:50I didn't realize this is a school for children.
00:18:52Sorry about the mix-up.
00:18:53Look, don't be intimidated. It was everyone's first day once.
00:18:57It's for kids.
00:18:58It's for the young at heart.
00:19:03So, today we're learning about composition.
00:19:08Okay.
00:19:09Okay.
00:19:15I'm Jamie, by the way.
00:19:17Hi, I'm Michael.
00:19:20Lovely.
00:19:22And the light is coming from...
00:19:24Here.
00:19:25Very good.
00:19:28How am I doing?
00:19:29Well, we don't give grades here, but...
00:19:33You're doing great.
00:19:34You really caught the light here, which is difficult.
00:19:37It's a little too controlled.
00:19:40A little too concerned with the outcome.
00:19:43You can see all that from this.
00:19:45Art is very revealing.
00:19:49Don't beat yourself up over it.
00:19:51I actually struggle with it in my work, too.
00:19:54So, what do you do to counteract it?
00:19:56Well, when I remember to,
00:19:58I try to let go of expectations of perfection.
00:20:04And...
00:20:06Just relax and...
00:20:10Let myself enjoy.
00:20:12So...
00:20:14What do you suggest I do?
00:20:19Take a new canvas.
00:20:23And, this time...
00:20:27Don't make.
00:20:28Just...
00:20:30Let yourself feel.
00:20:35Go on.
00:20:37I'll see you soon.
00:20:39Bye, Miss Haley.
00:20:40Bye, Lizzie.
00:20:41Remember, composition!
00:20:44Bye.
00:20:47So...
00:20:50What do you suggest I do?
00:20:52I don't know.
00:20:55I don't know.
00:20:57I'm not sure.
00:20:58I don't know.
00:21:00I don't know.
00:21:01I don't know.
00:21:02I don't know.
00:21:03I don't know.
00:21:04I don't know.
00:21:05What did you think?
00:21:07I think the jury's out on my innate creativity,
00:21:09but the upside is I've got a lot of kindling, so...
00:21:13No, look, this is progress.
00:21:15Don't give up yet. It was just your first lesson.
00:21:18Yeah, I could definitely use another.
00:21:20Yeah, you might like the 13 to 15-year-old class better.
00:21:23Or maybe a one-on-one.
00:21:27Um, do you offer private instruction?
00:21:32I do.
00:21:34Do you have availability Thursday, 5 p.m.?
00:21:39I do. That would be perfect.
00:21:47You have a date?
00:21:49It's a lesson. He's a student.
00:21:51He's a professional.
00:21:53But he is really handsome.
00:21:55And he has an accent.
00:21:57Oh, maybe.
00:21:59Have you decided what you're going to show Renee tomorrow?
00:22:01No. I wanted to paint something new.
00:22:04But what are we doing here?
00:22:06Max is redoing our garden.
00:22:08Max?
00:22:10Does that mean he's meeting us here?
00:22:13Yeah. Why?
00:22:15Don't tell me you're going to run away just to avoid him.
00:22:17I wouldn't phrase it like that.
00:22:20Hey, guys.
00:22:27Thanks.
00:22:29You?
00:22:30Renee and I will be by at 10 on Thursday.
00:22:33Good luck painting.
00:22:34Thank you. I need the good luck.
00:22:37You headed home?
00:22:38I can, um, walk you?
00:22:41Uh, you know, actually, I have to go to the farmer's market, so...
00:22:44That's perfect. I have to head there and pick up some basil.
00:22:46I'm making pesto for dinner.
00:22:49Pesto?
00:22:50Yeah.
00:22:52So, uh, did I hear Ava say that you were painting again?
00:22:56Yeah. I'm working on a submission for a showcase.
00:23:00Well, that's awesome.
00:23:01I was actually getting kind of sad thinking you weren't going to make art anymore.
00:23:04I'm kind of a big fan.
00:23:07What?
00:23:09I remember when you were a kid, you'd be out in your yard for hours,
00:23:11just painting with whatever you could find.
00:23:13Chalk, sticks, dirt.
00:23:15Do you remember when you made that massive mud mural?
00:23:19That was awesome.
00:23:20Yeah, well, too bad you can't make a living off of sidewalk art.
00:23:23Right?
00:23:25Yeah, you've also told me your school's going well.
00:23:27Yeah.
00:23:28My dad and I are actually teaming up to open some new locations.
00:23:31Congrats. That's... that's awesome.
00:23:34Hold on.
00:23:36If you're running two locations, and working with kids,
00:23:39where's that going to leave time for painting?
00:23:41I'll paint on the side.
00:23:43Uh, Jamie, you're not a paint-on-the-sider.
00:23:45Don't you think you should be focusing on your art?
00:23:48Oh, so now you're an expert on how I should live my life?
00:23:51Well, hang on a second. Let me get a pen. I'll just take notes.
00:23:53Okay.
00:23:54First note.
00:23:56Commit to your art.
00:23:59Really?
00:24:00You're giving me advice on how to commit?
00:24:03I can commit.
00:24:05To what?
00:24:06Uh, to following my heart, even though half the time I have no clue where that takes me.
00:24:09Okay, according to Ava, over the past six years,
00:24:12it's taken you to over a dozen cities, jobs, and girlfriends.
00:24:17Okay, I am trying to figure out what I want, okay?
00:24:20Or maybe it's just you like the new, the cheese,
00:24:23and then when something loses, it's novelty.
00:24:27Like I said, I'm figuring out what I want.
00:24:29I'm not as lucky as you.
00:24:31You've always known what you want.
00:24:33To paint.
00:24:34Well, as usual, Max, this has been, uh, interesting.
00:24:40Okay, wait. Let me guess.
00:24:42You forgot something at home, and now you have to run and get it.
00:24:46Bye, Max.
00:24:47See you at home.
00:25:17Bye.
00:25:49What time is it?
00:25:50Oh, time to wake up.
00:25:51Renee's gonna be here in less than an hour.
00:25:53Have you decided what you're gonna show?
00:25:58Oh, Jamie, it's beautiful.
00:26:00Renee's gonna love it.
00:26:03No, I'm not showing her that.
00:26:05Then why were you up all night painting it?
00:26:08Because I felt...
00:26:12inspired.
00:26:13But I'm not showing Renee a vision board.
00:26:16I'll just, uh, display some of my old landscapes I haven't submitted before.
00:26:24I'll go clean up.
00:26:38So, Jamie.
00:26:39Yes?
00:26:40When did you start painting?
00:26:42When I was in high school.
00:26:43Well, actually, I guess I've always been painting in some form or another.
00:26:48I mean, when I was a kid, I used to sit and make art with anything I could find.
00:26:52But I started seriously painting when I was 15, and then art school, and got an MFA.
00:27:00Well, you are incredibly talented.
00:27:04And there are so many successful elements here.
00:27:08But I'm just not feeling the emotion.
00:27:13Some of your work feels as if it's forced.
00:27:16Almost as if you're playing it safe.
00:27:21Do you have anything else that maybe I could take a look at?
00:27:24Not at this time.
00:27:26Well, then I thank you for sharing.
00:27:29It has truly been a privilege.
00:27:30Actually, she does.
00:27:32No, I don't.
00:27:33She does.
00:27:34You do.
00:27:35I don't.
00:27:36She does.
00:27:37Well, it's from Jamie's new series about dreams.
00:27:43Well, then I would love to see it.
00:27:45Right this way.
00:27:55I love it.
00:27:57It's heartfelt, and bold, and it takes a chance.
00:28:02Do you think you can get it to me in time for the art festival?
00:28:04Yes.
00:28:05So I'm in the showcase.
00:28:08This is in the showcase?
00:28:09Congratulations.
00:28:13Vision board.
00:28:21Hey.
00:28:22Wow, you've been busy.
00:28:25Just some potential plans how we could use the space,
00:28:28a list of contractors and vendors,
00:28:30and the start of an operations manual for hiring and best practices.
00:28:34I've also emailed it to you.
00:28:36Dad, you've done so much.
00:28:40I'm excited, and I've got the time, and I know you've got a lot on your plate.
00:28:45Well, it's just until I turn in this painting,
00:28:48and then I promise you will have my undivided attention.
00:28:50Okay, honey.
00:28:53I almost forgot the most important part.
00:28:55What's that?
00:29:01Donuts.
00:29:04Okay.
00:29:26Don't get enough of me at home?
00:29:29Sorry.
00:29:32How's work going?
00:29:33A walk in the park.
00:29:35It's only my fourth day, so we'll see.
00:29:37Four days? Wow, that's a commitment for you.
00:29:41Can I take a look?
00:29:43Sure.
00:29:52It's beautiful.
00:29:54Well, it's easy to make something beautiful when all this is your subject.
00:30:00Well, you're modest, but you're right.
00:30:03Cherry blossom season is the best time of year.
00:30:08When I was homesick, this is pretty much what I thought of.
00:30:12Yeah. They're pretty perfect.
00:30:16Their form, their color, their composition.
00:30:20You know, it's funny. I've never really thought of them like that.
00:30:23Well, what do you think about?
00:30:25How they make me feel.
00:30:30And how's that?
00:30:32Like perfection does exist.
00:30:34Although fleeting, like life.
00:30:38It's all the more precious for its uncertainty.
00:30:47Ava told me that you got accepted into that showcase.
00:30:50With her help, yes.
00:30:53And first prize is a solo show in Paris.
00:30:56Your dream.
00:30:59I'm surprised you remember that.
00:31:01Really? We've known each other for 24 years.
00:31:03You think you've mentioned Paris once or twice or a thousand times?
00:31:07Yeah, it's an artist cliché.
00:31:09Show in Paris.
00:31:11Well, who cares if it's cliché?
00:31:13You know, for once, I think I can actually get behind your cavalier attitude.
00:31:18Did I just make you smile?
00:31:20No. It's fun on my own.
00:31:22Oh, okay.
00:31:24Well, thank you.
00:31:26I should get going.
00:31:28Thank you for the walk.
00:31:30You're welcome. Come back.
00:31:33Oh, bring your students.
00:31:35It's a good idea.
00:31:37Yeah, I know. I'm full of them.
00:31:48Hey.
00:31:50Hi.
00:31:56You ready?
00:31:58Yes.
00:32:00I chose bottles because painting glass is tricky, especially in this light.
00:32:04It sort of forces us to stop and really look.
00:32:08You know, it's like a mirror.
00:32:10It's like a mirror.
00:32:12It's like a mirror.
00:32:14It forces us to stop and really look.
00:32:18You know, and then upon studying it, you realize it's so much more than just glass in a bottle.
00:32:24It's highlights, lowlights, shade, tone.
00:32:27How do you know that?
00:32:29I love art.
00:32:31I painted when I was young. I actually had delusions of being a professional artist.
00:32:35Ah. Well, in the art world, we call delusions dreams.
00:32:44So what happened?
00:32:46I wanted a career path with a bit more stability.
00:32:50But also, I found it too hard to put my work out there.
00:32:55To put myself out there in that way.
00:32:58I know what you mean.
00:33:04Plus, I hate getting messy.
00:33:06Well, that may be hard to avoid because art is messy.
00:33:17I have an idea.
00:33:18The baby steps putting yourself out there.
00:33:21Canvas Creations is having their spring show.
00:33:25Maybe you could display something.
00:33:28I'll give it some thought.
00:33:32What about you?
00:33:33What's your work like?
00:33:35What do you paint?
00:33:36Oh, I'm not really sure how to answer that.
00:33:39Well, I took a year away from painting, and now I'm back with something different.
00:33:46It looks different.
00:33:49It feels different.
00:33:50So will you show me this magical painting of yours?
00:33:52Yeah, I'd love to.
00:33:55When it's done.
00:33:56That means I get to see you again.
00:34:00I'd like that.
00:34:06So, how was your date?
00:34:08It wasn't a date.
00:34:09It was a lesson.
00:34:12But I think we might see each other again.
00:34:14Like as a date or a lesson?
00:34:16I'm not sure.
00:34:19Just as it seemed like he was going to ask me out, he got a phone call and had to leave.
00:34:23Oh, and how's the Canvas Creations expansion?
00:34:26Honestly, I feel like I'm not really pulling it off.
00:34:28I don't know.
00:34:29I don't know.
00:34:31Oh, and how's the Canvas Creations expansion?
00:34:33Honestly, I feel like I'm not really pulling my weight with all the painting I'm doing for the showcase.
00:34:38And what happens if you win the showcase?
00:34:40Are you really going to want to stop working on your solo show in Paris to do marketing?
00:34:45I don't know.
00:34:47Think about it.
00:35:01Well, aren't I full of good ideas?
00:35:03Don't make me remind you of all the bad ideas you've had over the years.
00:35:07Let's see. Golf cart in a lake?
00:35:10Ring a bell?
00:35:12That was a good one.
00:35:13You know what? Let's focus on the present.
00:35:16I've got another good idea.
00:35:17When you're done here, come meet me at the Rose Garden.
00:35:20I'll give you a special behind-the-scenes tour.
00:35:22Oh, thank you, but I'm busy.
00:35:24I can't hear you.
00:35:25I'm busy.
00:35:26I'll give you a special behind-the-scenes tour.
00:35:28Oh, thank you, but I'm busy.
00:35:29I can't hear you.
00:35:31And I'll see you later.
00:35:45So this is our next project.
00:35:47Wow.
00:35:48Yeah, we just finished the design, and then we go into the planting process.
00:35:53Do you think you'll stick around long enough to see it finished?
00:35:58I don't know.
00:35:59But I bet you're eager to have a new neighbor, so...
00:36:03Actually, I was kind of learning to enjoy having you as a neighbor.
00:36:06Oh, thanks, Jamie.
00:36:08I wish it didn't need the actually or kind of we're learning to, but besides that, yeah.
00:36:14I think that is the nicest thing you've ever said to me.
00:36:16You're welcome.
00:36:18Oh, we're interviewing for the landscape architect position.
00:36:22I'm confused.
00:36:24You have a master's in landscape architecture.
00:36:28I do.
00:36:29So you're a landscape architect.
00:36:32Yeah, I am.
00:36:34So why don't you apply for the position?
00:36:36No, no, no.
00:36:37Way too much responsibility.
00:36:39It's all managing, coordinating, and bureaucracy, and it's the groundskeeper.
00:36:44I just get to play in the dirt all day.
00:36:46Of course.
00:36:47Of course.
00:36:48You know, who knows how long I want to be around.
00:36:49There's no way I'm getting tied down with those obligations and responsibilities.
00:36:52You mean life.
00:36:54No, that's not life.
00:36:57Life is passion and fun and traveling and...
00:37:03Life should be an adventure.
00:37:05Me, personally, I don't want to have any regrets.
00:37:08But never committing to anything has regrets of its own.
00:37:11Now who's the expert on someone else's life?
00:37:15You're exasperating.
00:37:17Yet, you are smiling.
00:37:24Let's go.
00:37:27Ava said that your vision board was going well.
00:37:29Oh, she did, did she?
00:37:31Yeah.
00:37:32What else did she say?
00:37:34She mentioned something about a shadowy dream man.
00:37:36Oh, it was in passing, but this dream man.
00:37:40Who is he?
00:37:42I don't know.
00:37:44What do you think he's like?
00:37:47Well, he's perfect.
00:37:50Sounds like me.
00:37:52He's also too humble to know he's perfect.
00:37:54Also sounds like me.
00:37:56Okay.
00:37:58He's kind and passionate, charitable, intelligent.
00:38:04Well, he loves art.
00:38:06And of course he's very handsome.
00:38:08Of course.
00:38:10But how does he make you feel?
00:38:12Because there's tons of intelligent, smart, articulate men out there.
00:38:14Me, for example.
00:38:16But what matters is how he makes you feel.
00:38:23Hmm.
00:38:25I'll give it some thought.
00:38:27Right now, I have to go.
00:38:35Hi.
00:38:37Hi.
00:38:39I'm sorry I had to run off yesterday and we didn't get to finish our conversation about seeing each other again.
00:38:43For another lesson?
00:38:45I was thinking more like a date.
00:38:48Oh.
00:38:50Sure.
00:38:52Okay.
00:38:54Tomorrow night?
00:38:56Great. Perfect.
00:38:58Okay.
00:39:13Ah.
00:39:19I walked out without giving this to you, but I saw it in the florist and it made me think of you.
00:39:36It's breathtaking.
00:39:39See you tomorrow night?
00:39:40Yes.
00:39:59The vision board man is Michael.
00:40:03It's like he just stepped out of my painting.
00:40:05This is weird.
00:40:07I mean, there has to be a logical explanation for it.
00:40:10Sometimes in life, there are no logical explanations.
00:40:14Like with love.
00:40:27Is that Michael?
00:40:29No, it's Max.
00:40:31Max who?
00:40:33Max, your brother.
00:40:34Excuse me, my brother is texting you and you're smiling, but you're not just like smiling, you are...
00:40:39Smiling.
00:40:41I'm not smiling like anything.
00:40:43I'm definitely not smiling like that.
00:40:45Nobody is smiling like that.
00:40:48Ava, you asked us to get along, so we're getting along. That's it.
00:40:52Hi.
00:41:04Surprise of surprises, you actually showed up.
00:41:07I did, but I can only stay for a little. I'm meeting my dad in an hour.
00:41:11Okay.
00:41:13Okay.
00:41:17Setting up for the Cherry Blossom Art Festival?
00:41:20Yeah.
00:41:22Oh.
00:41:24Ta-da.
00:41:26Seriously?
00:41:28Hey, you still remember how to drive this thing?
00:41:30I think?
00:41:31No, you put one foot in front of the other and you pedal.
00:41:34Let's go.
00:41:36Why don't you take that one?
00:41:41Is it weird that we're doing this?
00:41:44Why would it be weird?
00:41:46Because this is like total dating activity and we are not dating.
00:41:50Oh, no, not a date, just two friends, cycling.
00:41:54Uh-huh.
00:41:56Since you brought it up, what's going on with your dating life, huh?
00:41:58I thought for sure you'd end up marrying your ex, whatever his name was.
00:42:02Ha! I also thought I would marry whatever his name was.
00:42:07So, what happened?
00:42:09Well, he said he thought we'd lost our spark.
00:42:13Oh.
00:42:15And if he stayed with me, he'd feel like he was making the safe choice.
00:42:19Ouch.
00:42:21Yeah, ouch.
00:42:23What did you think?
00:42:24Well, I was heartbroken and I thought for sure he was wrong.
00:42:28Relationships are more than a spark.
00:42:32They're history and compatibility, sharing lives.
00:42:40But now I'm starting to see he was right.
00:42:43We would have been settling.
00:42:46The breakup was really hard.
00:42:49It made me question everything.
00:42:50I mean, I was so sure my life would turn out this one way and then suddenly I was 29, single.
00:43:00My heart wasn't panning out the way I thought it would and I realized I couldn't keep living in a dream.
00:43:08So you opened Canvas Creations?
00:43:10Yeah.
00:43:12It was sort of a plan B that's become a plan A.
00:43:17What about you?
00:43:19You dating anyone?
00:43:24No.
00:43:26Not yet.
00:43:29Well, this has actually been fun.
00:43:34Oh, I just wish it didn't need the actually again.
00:43:40I should get going.
00:43:41I should get going.
00:43:44But there's something we should do first.
00:43:47Remember, we always used to do this after a bike ride.
00:43:50Brings back good memories.
00:43:52It does.
00:43:55I do remember the last time I was at the bikes.
00:43:59It was that spring when you pulled the secret admirer prank on me.
00:44:03Your last letter said my secret admirer would meet me at the bike rentals and reveal himself.
00:44:11I was so excited I told all my friends and I waited for hours.
00:44:17And he never came.
00:44:19I'm sorry, Jamie. I was...
00:44:22Max, it's okay. We were kids.
00:44:25You know the funny thing is, I actually really liked my secret admirer.
00:44:29I felt like he liked me too.
00:44:32Despite how mad I was at him for that.
00:44:35I actually kept the letters.
00:44:37I actually kept the letters. I know.
00:44:40It's because, I don't know, they meant so much to me.
00:44:44Where'd you get that material anyway?
00:44:47I wrote it.
00:44:49No, really. Come on.
00:44:51Really, I wrote it.
00:44:55Well, how'd you come up with it?
00:44:58I thought of you.
00:45:02I thought of the look on your face when you would fall for the joke.
00:45:06Yeah, that one.
00:45:09Bye, Max.
00:45:20Hey, Renee, it's Jamie.
00:45:22I wanted to let you know I'll be turning in my painting tomorrow.
00:45:35Hello. Hi.
00:45:37Oh, come in. I just need to grab my bag.
00:45:39Sure.
00:45:41Wow.
00:45:43Lovely place.
00:45:45Thanks.
00:45:47Shall we?
00:45:49Yes.
00:45:59I thought we'd check out this music in the park event.
00:46:02Yeah.
00:46:06You OK?
00:46:08What's going on?
00:46:10Oh, yeah.
00:46:12Just a funny coincidence.
00:46:25Oh, I didn't know they had live music here.
00:46:28It's a new monthly arts and culture series.
00:46:30Different sponsors bring in musicians and artists.
00:46:33I'm thinking of hosting a painting exhibit here this summer.
00:46:36You're going to host it?
00:46:39I might have buried the lead a bit, but I actually head up an arts foundation.
00:46:44Really?
00:46:46The Herman Arts Foundation.
00:46:48The Herman Arts Foundation that sponsors the Cherry Blossom Art Festival?
00:46:54Yes, yeah.
00:46:55The painting I told you I was finishing is for the Emerging Artist Showcase.
00:46:59Really?
00:47:01Oh, what a small world.
00:47:03Yeah.
00:47:05There's something wrong.
00:47:07Oh.
00:47:09Well, I guess I'm just wondering if this is a conflict of interest?
00:47:17Oh, no, no. It's a happy coincidence.
00:47:21OK.
00:47:22I don't judge the showcase. I have no effect on the outcome.
00:47:25Ah.
00:47:27I mean, I'll be at the judging to represent the foundation, but I have no sway on who wins.
00:47:33I see.
00:47:36So you'll be at the judging?
00:47:39Of course.
00:47:41What's wrong?
00:47:43Nothing.
00:47:45Nothing is wrong.
00:47:47Nothing is wrong.
00:47:54You are never going to believe what happened.
00:47:56What's wrong? How was the date?
00:47:58Better question is, who is the date?
00:48:00Michael is actually Michael Herman.
00:48:03From the Herman Arts Foundation?
00:48:06No way.
00:48:08Yes way.
00:48:10When I told Renee about Canvas Creations, she mentioned the head of the foundation was interested, but I didn't realize that that was Michael.
00:48:15Huh. How funny.
00:48:17No, not funny.
00:48:19Why? Who cares? So you went on a date. He's not a judge, right?
00:48:23No, he's not a judge. And I won't be a contestant.
00:48:27Why not?
00:48:29Because I can't display a painting of a shadowy man giving me the exact rose Michael gave me,
00:48:36standing in front of the colonnade, exactly like the one he took me on a date in front of the art exhibition,
00:48:44exactly like the one he plans on hosting this summer.
00:48:48Oh yeah, that's bad.
00:48:50Yeah.
00:48:52What am I going to do? My painting is due in five days and I have nothing.
00:48:57No, you have something.
00:48:59What?
00:49:01You have five days.
00:49:03Great.
00:49:05I know I said I would deliver it today, but I need a few more days.
00:49:11Jamie, I need your painting in four days.
00:49:14Will you have it finished?
00:49:16Definitely. I have already made waves accepting your unfinished submission.
00:49:19Otherwise, I will have to give you spots to someone else.
00:49:22I understand.
00:49:24Okay. Thank you.
00:49:35Hi, honey.
00:49:37I thought we didn't start construction until next week.
00:49:40The contractor had a cancellation so he could begin earlier.
00:49:43Oh, that's right. Dad texted me about that.
00:49:47They were sad.
00:49:49Oh, he's been here with the workers since 7 a.m., so he just went to get them lunch.
00:49:54That is so sweet.
00:49:56Ugh, I feel bad.
00:49:59I mean, I should be the one here at 7 a.m. I should be the one at 7 a.m.
00:50:02I mean, I should be the one here at 7 a.m. I should be the one getting them lunch.
00:50:05It's okay, honey. He knows this is a hectic time for you.
00:50:09So, I have been waiting. Tell me all about Michael.
00:50:16He's great.
00:50:18He's smart, cultured, very handsome.
00:50:24I mean, he is literally my vision board come to life.
00:50:29Somehow.
00:50:33I don't know. There's something missing.
00:50:37When I first met him, I got, like, fluttery.
00:50:42And I didn't have that last night.
00:50:46I know. There's not always an immediate connection.
00:50:50So, we're going out again. He's going to take me to an art show opening.
00:50:54So, I think it just takes time.
00:50:57I think it just takes time.
00:50:59Jamie, you shouldn't have to convince yourself.
00:51:11Who is it?
00:51:13It's me.
00:51:15Come in.
00:51:17Hi.
00:51:19Hi.
00:51:21I just made a bunch of cookies and I figured I better get them out of my apartment before I eat them all and I thought of you.
00:51:25I thought of you.
00:51:27Well, that is very sweet.
00:51:32Is this your painting for the showcase?
00:51:35Yeah.
00:51:36Can I see it?
00:51:42It's very minimalist.
00:51:45Okay, what happened? I thought you were almost done with this.
00:51:48Well, long story short, be careful what you wish for.
00:51:55My last painting went awry.
00:51:59And instead of taking it as a sign I should give up on art, I've never wanted to paint more.
00:52:08That's great.
00:52:10Yeah, but I have a blank canvas.
00:52:13What would you tell one of your students?
00:52:20I would tell them not to focus on making.
00:52:26But on feeling.
00:52:28I would tell them to have fun.
00:52:33I would tell them to be playful.
00:52:40Yeah.
00:52:48That was playful, no?
00:52:51You didn't.
00:52:53I did.
00:52:55Okay.
00:53:05Oh.
00:53:06Oh, okay.
00:53:18Okay.
00:53:19Yeah?
00:53:20Yeah.
00:53:21I dare you.
00:53:23Go for it.
00:53:24It's coming.
00:53:28Nice try.
00:53:30I should get back to work.
00:53:33Okay.
00:53:36But thank you for the cookies.
00:53:40No problem.
00:53:55I like this.
00:53:56Couples are interesting.
00:53:57They're gorgeous.
00:54:00After you.
00:54:03Thanks.
00:54:05Cheers.
00:54:06Cheers.
00:54:10Oh, there's some curators I want you to show your work to.
00:54:13Oh, I don't think I'm ready for that.
00:54:15Of course you are.
00:54:16I've no doubt you'll stun them with your talent.
00:54:19Well, that's very sweet.
00:54:21But first I actually have to have something to show them.
00:54:26What about your showcase submission?
00:54:28I thought you were almost finished.
00:54:30There was a...
00:54:32hiccup.
00:54:33That hiccup sounds stressful.
00:54:37It is.
00:54:38It's a stressful time.
00:54:40I had to start over on my painting while also teaching
00:54:44and working with my dad to open another canvas creations.
00:54:49We're looking to franchise.
00:54:50So, so...
00:54:51That's incredible.
00:54:52You think?
00:54:53Of course.
00:54:54It'll be a steady source of income that gives you security.
00:54:57Yeah, that's true.
00:54:59But, I mean, the expansion means I won't have any time to paint.
00:55:03Now, maybe.
00:55:04But it's a short-term sacrifice for a long-term gain.
00:55:08And you can paint on the side, right?
00:55:11Yeah, but I'm a painter.
00:55:13Not a paint on the side.
00:55:15Yes, but...
00:55:17art is a living, an uncertain future.
00:55:20As you know.
00:55:22I'm not saying you should give up on painting.
00:55:26I know how difficult the art world is.
00:55:28It's good to have a backup plan.
00:55:32Shall we see the work?
00:55:34Mm-hmm.
00:55:37Hi.
00:55:40Mm-hmm.
00:55:46Wow.
00:55:48Thank you for bringing me.
00:55:49Thank you for coming.
00:55:54Michael...
00:55:56I think you're wonderful.
00:55:57And I've really enjoyed our time together.
00:56:02But...
00:56:03But...
00:56:04You're using the past tense.
00:56:07I mean, we have so much in common.
00:56:09It seems like we'd be perfect.
00:56:14And yet, somehow, I just don't think we're the right match.
00:56:20But I'd still love to teach you.
00:56:24If that's something you want.
00:56:28I'll give it some thought.
00:56:34Okay.
00:56:37Okay.
00:56:43You never stop.
00:56:46Well, there is a special magic to night gardening.
00:56:50The flowering plants come out.
00:56:53The jasmine.
00:56:56I'm glad I caught you.
00:56:58I have something for you.
00:56:59Come on.
00:57:04Wait here one second.
00:57:05Okay.
00:57:12For your inspiration.
00:57:16And if that doesn't work, my micro-bro.
00:57:25No problem.
00:57:26That's very sweet.
00:57:28Thanks.
00:57:31Good night, Jamie.
00:57:35Good night, Max.
00:58:05Good night.
00:58:35Good night.
00:58:52Hey, Dad.
00:58:53Hi, honey. Just wondering if you're on your way.
00:58:57We were supposed to pick out paint today.
00:59:00I'm actually already back at the studio.
00:59:02Dad, I am so sorry.
00:59:04My piece is due in three days and I was up all night working on it.
00:59:07I...
00:59:09I completely forgot we were meeting.
00:59:11That's okay. We can pick out paint some other day.
00:59:14But, Jamie...
00:59:18Good luck with your piece.
00:59:35I come bearing cake.
00:59:38Thank you so much for picking it up.
00:59:40You're welcome.
00:59:41Cute.
00:59:43Hey, you have not texted me back since your date with Michael.
00:59:46Are you hiding something from me?
00:59:48Well, actually...
00:59:53Hi.
00:59:54Hey, guys.
00:59:56Hey.
00:59:57Hi.
00:59:58Oh.
00:59:59Thank you for picking up the extra cupcakes.
01:00:02No problem.
01:00:05So, what do you think?
01:00:10Hi.
01:00:11Your daughter is so talented.
01:00:14Miss Jamie!
01:00:15Yes!
01:00:17Hi.
01:00:18I finished in time.
01:00:20I knew you could do it.
01:00:23I'm so proud of you.
01:00:25Thank you so much.
01:00:26Of course.
01:00:35So...
01:00:37What do you think?
01:00:39Well, I think it's safe to say this is an occasion where you can say even a kid could have done this one.
01:00:46Kidding.
01:00:47It's great.
01:00:49We're lucky to have you as a teacher.
01:00:51Oh, vice versa.
01:01:05Excuse me.
01:01:07Is that Michael?
01:01:08Yeah, I didn't know he was coming.
01:01:10Hi.
01:01:12Wow.
01:01:14Well, I'm glad you decided to show your work.
01:01:17I decided it's good to put myself out there.
01:01:20Even if I don't get the reception I hoped for.
01:01:24Jamie, I won't try to pretend.
01:01:26I like you.
01:01:28I was hoping we'd have a future.
01:01:30But I know that, like with painting, what matters is how it feels.
01:01:40Who is that?
01:01:41That's Jamie's dream man.
01:01:44Wait, wait, who is that?
01:01:46His name is Michael.
01:01:47He runs the arts festival.
01:01:50Jamie's dating him.
01:01:51What?
01:01:52I'm sorry, Max.
01:01:53I didn't want you to get hurt.
01:01:55Why would I get hurt?
01:01:57Come on, you have a thing for Jamie.
01:01:59You've always had a thing for Jamie.
01:02:01A thing?
01:02:04Well, what is the right word for 15 years of unspoken feelings?
01:02:09Max, maybe it's time to speak those feelings.
01:02:12Because we saw you and Jamie before and it looks like she feels it too.
01:02:16Yeah, I gotta go.
01:02:21Baby steps.
01:02:30Hey, you hungry? I made dinner.
01:02:35I could eat.
01:02:39Wow, your apartment is so nice.
01:02:44I'll try not to be offended by how surprised you sound.
01:02:46Whoa.
01:02:47I thought that you shouldn't have to wait till your show in Paris to eat French food.
01:02:53Well, I have no idea how I'll possibly win that show.
01:02:57But thank you.
01:03:00You know how to stir?
01:03:01Ah, stirring is about the limit of my culinary talents.
01:03:05Well, at least you have that.
01:03:06Uh-huh.
01:03:07Mm-hmm.
01:03:10I didn't know you cooked.
01:03:12Yeah, you know, I dabble.
01:03:15Tonight I made a Parisian dish called pomme aligot.
01:03:18Oh.
01:03:19It's just a fancy way of saying mashed potatoes with fondue on it.
01:03:23Mashed potatoes with fondue on it.
01:03:27So the French birth Cezanne and Monet and now their greatest masterpiece, cheesy potatoes.
01:03:35What about their true masterpiece?
01:03:37Monet's water lilies.
01:03:39Oh, French fries.
01:03:43Of course.
01:03:53Oh.
01:04:07So, um, I saw you at the art exhibit talking to...
01:04:13Michael.
01:04:14Right.
01:04:15What's going on between you two?
01:04:17Well, um, I was teaching him to paint, and we went on a date, and then I ended things.
01:04:31Why?
01:04:33You know, I'm not sure exactly.
01:04:36But things are over between you now?
01:04:39Yeah.
01:04:41Okay, um, glad to hear that.
01:04:49I have something to tell you.
01:04:51Okay.
01:04:52Remember that whole year I pretended to be your secret admirer?
01:04:56Mm-hmm.
01:04:57I wasn't pretending. It wasn't a joke. Everything that I wrote was true.
01:05:04That's how I felt.
01:05:08I was gonna tell you that day at the bikes. I was there.
01:05:12But when I saw you, I just... I chickened out.
01:05:17And now I'm here trying to find the courage to tell you that 15 years later, I'm still an admirer.
01:05:30But I don't want it to be a secret anymore.
01:05:35Jamie, I have feelings for you.
01:05:38Oh.
01:05:41Well, um, thank you for telling me.
01:05:47I mean, I really don't know what to say. I... Spending time with you has been great.
01:05:54But, Max, I worry that next week you'll be interested in someplace else.
01:06:04Something else. Someone else.
01:06:07I mean, I know you.
01:06:08No. You... You think you know me.
01:06:13But this? This is who I am.
01:06:19Someone who wants to be with you.
01:06:21Someone who always has.
01:06:28Well, um, can I think about it?
01:06:32These cheese potatoes are not gonna eat themselves.
01:06:37Bon appétit.
01:06:51Bon appétit.
01:07:07So, Sundance or Golden Light?
01:07:11Uh, well, they're both great. You decide.
01:07:16I've never known you to be laissez-faire about paint.
01:07:18They're both good options.
01:07:20You don't like either? I think I have some samples in the back.
01:07:31I finished my painting.
01:07:33That's wonderful.
01:07:35And as soon as I did, I felt like I want to start another one.
01:07:40And that made me realize I want to be painting.
01:07:46And on my breaks from painting, teaching.
01:07:50I don't want to be running a big business. I don't want to be hiring or marketing.
01:07:55So tell your dad.
01:07:57But he's so excited. I mean, I haven't seen him this happy in years.
01:08:01Plus, we've sunk so much time and money into this place, it just...
01:08:07I mean, it feels wrong to consider pulling away, but...
01:08:11It feels worse to keep going, knowing every minute I'd be here, I would want to be painting.
01:08:19I found the samples.
01:08:26Great.
01:08:35Oh, Jamie.
01:08:37Oh, Jamie.
01:08:39Please tell me you have some good news.
01:08:41Yes, I finished this morning.
01:08:44Full disclosure, it's not the painting you approved, but...
01:08:48Renee, I think it is so much better.
01:08:55Here's a picture.
01:08:59Oh.
01:09:00Oh.
01:09:05And you'll have this delivered to me by tonight?
01:09:07Yes, tonight.
01:09:14Excuse me.
01:09:18Thank you so much.
01:09:22Thanks.
01:09:23Why are you avoiding me?
01:09:25I'm not avoiding you.
01:09:26Yes, you are, since your date with Michael.
01:09:28Michael? What happened? Did you elope?
01:09:30Uh, no. The date was fine.
01:09:33Michael likes me. He expressed he hoped we'd have a future.
01:09:38Why do I feel like I should hold the confetti?
01:09:40Because I ended it.
01:09:41What? Why?
01:09:42Because I'm falling for Max.
01:09:44Oh, Jamie. You know I love Max, but you know how Max is. He can't commit to anything.
01:09:48I know. Michael seems so perfect.
01:09:50And you're talking about a future?
01:09:52Again, I know. It makes no sense.
01:09:55You painted that whole vision board about Michael. I mean, that has to mean something.
01:09:58I think it means that in painting what I thought I want, I realized what I need.
01:10:06I just don't want you or Max to get hurt.
01:10:10I don't either.
01:10:13Oof. I have to go. Uh, dinner tonight?
01:10:16Oh, yeah. Tom and I are going to Patricio's for pizza. With Max. I guess we can double date now.
01:10:25Okay. Bye.
01:10:27Oh, perfect.
01:10:31Hi.
01:10:33Hi.
01:10:36Jamie just left.
01:10:38Really?
01:10:39Sad I missed her.
01:10:40I bet you were.
01:10:41I bet I am.
01:10:42She told me something's been going on between the two of you.
01:10:45What did she say?
01:10:47Look, Max, you know I love you, and I think you're all these amazing things,
01:10:51but I don't want you to sweep Jamie off her feet into some whirlwind romance,
01:10:55and then two months from now, just up and leave her.
01:10:58I would never do that.
01:11:00Are you sure? Because you don't have the best track record.
01:11:03Yeah, I know, but...
01:11:04You never thought you could have her, so you didn't have to take your feelings seriously to actually commit.
01:11:09And Jamie deserves someone who can commit.
01:11:12She was just dating someone who wanted to, and she broke it off with him to be with you.
01:11:18Just... don't hurt her.
01:11:34Hey, new neighbor.
01:11:36Hey.
01:11:37Are you free? I want to show you my painting before I turn it in.
01:11:41Actually, I'm not. I have something to do with work, so...
01:11:44Oh, work?
01:11:45Yeah.
01:11:47Okay, Max, what's going on?
01:11:49Jamie, I...
01:11:52I think you should be with Michael.
01:11:55Are you...
01:11:58joking?
01:11:59No.
01:12:00Look, we both know that you deserve someone who can give you everything.
01:12:04Someone who can commit.
01:12:06Okay, well, I didn't ask you or anyone to commit.
01:12:11But it's really good to know you still can.
01:12:16I mean, Max, you pursued me.
01:12:18You told me that you had feelings for me, that you always have, and now I have feelings for you, and you're pulling away.
01:12:24But why? Because you're so scared of anything even remotely resembling commitment?
01:12:30No.
01:12:32Because I want you to be happy.
01:12:34No, that is not why.
01:12:37It's because this is who you are.
01:12:40You get so excited about something or someone, and then the second it stops being fun and starts being real, you just get scared and run away.
01:12:51You talk a big game about following your heart and living with no regret, and the truth is, that is either all talk...
01:13:02or when it comes to us, there is just no heart...
01:13:08and no regret.
01:13:10No.
01:13:15So I guess it's true, then.
01:13:19Every time I'm around you, I get hurt.
01:13:23I can't really...
01:13:40Yeah.
01:14:10Hi, Jamie. It's Renee.
01:14:36I needed your piece last night, and so I have no option but to replace your painting.
01:14:43I'm sorry.
01:15:07Honey, we've been trying to call you.
01:15:09Jamie, what's going on?
01:15:10What's going on is I lost my place in the showcase, and I am not going to win the show in Paris.
01:15:16And I have no idea what my future as a professional artist looks like, but even with all of that, I still don't want to give up on painting.
01:15:26Dad, I'm sorry. I know this entire expansion was my idea, and you're trying to help, but I just want to paint.
01:15:35I'm going to teach when I can.
01:15:36I know you do. I'm glad you realized it, too.
01:15:39Wait, you knew?
01:15:42Well, then why didn't you tell me?
01:15:43You had to figure it out on your own. I'm just glad you did it now and not 20 years from now.
01:15:51I'm sorry.
01:15:52Don't be sorry. Even doing just this was fun. It gave me a reason to get out of bed in the morning.
01:15:57You mean other than your wife. And daughter.
01:16:01I'll find something else to do.
01:16:05You know, Dad, you want me to be happy, and I want you to be happy, too.
01:16:14Do you love this?
01:16:17If I helped get it running and consulted as an artist in residence, could you continue without me and run the business?
01:16:26Is that something you'd want to do?
01:16:27Definitely.
01:16:28Then yes. I mean, it'll be hard without you, but I'll be happy knowing you're doing exactly what you should be doing.
01:16:38But, Jamie, how did you lose your spot in the showcase?
01:16:41Oh, I messed up my painting.
01:16:45And you can't fix it?
01:16:46No.
01:16:47But, maybe I could start over.
01:17:17I'm sorry.
01:17:48You're here. I thought you lost your spot.
01:17:50I did, and I have no idea if this will work, but I...
01:17:54We'll be back in a minute.
01:17:55Okay.
01:17:56Bye.
01:17:57Bye.
01:17:58Bye.
01:17:59Bye.
01:18:00Bye.
01:18:01Bye.
01:18:02Bye.
01:18:03Bye.
01:18:04Bye.
01:18:05Bye.
01:18:06Bye.
01:18:07Bye.
01:18:08Bye.
01:18:09Bye.
01:18:10Bye.
01:18:11Bye.
01:18:12Bye.
01:18:13Bye.
01:18:14Bye.
01:18:15Bye.
01:18:16We'll be back.
01:18:17Okay.
01:18:18You're sure?
01:18:19Yeah.
01:18:20Renee, Jamie, I had to give your spot to someone else.
01:18:23I know, and I completely understand, but I have just poured my heart into this, and I was...
01:18:32I was just hoping you could.
01:18:36Oh, thank you.
01:18:44Oh.
01:18:47I can't put this in the showcase. It wouldn't be fair.
01:18:51I understand.
01:18:52But we can still show this.
01:18:55You can?
01:18:57Well, you'll see. Leave it to me.
01:19:08Where have you been? I've called a hundred times.
01:19:10I know, I'm sorry. Long story short, right after I told you about Max, he, in typical Max fashion, lost interest and broke it off, and he said he thought I'd be better dating Michael.
01:19:23Oh, no.
01:19:24Oh, yes.
01:19:25No, that's not what happened. I gave Max a talking to, and I might have been a little harsh and said that Michael was what was best for you.
01:19:34What?
01:19:35I'm sorry. I had good intentions.
01:19:40So, Max backed off because he wanted what was best for me?
01:19:47I thought that was Michael.
01:19:49Yeah.
01:19:50Ava, look, I know Max and I do not make sense, but when I'm with him, I feel like I do in a painting.
01:20:01You know, like, like it's where I should be.
01:20:05It's all I've ever wanted from you.
01:20:10Maybe next time, just, like, a little less meddling.
01:20:13Deal.
01:20:15Besides, you would make the best sister-in-law.
01:20:21Or aunt.
01:20:23You're pregnant.
01:20:26It's still early.
01:20:28Congratulations.
01:20:30I'm so happy for you. I have a million questions. I want to hear everything.
01:20:36Right now.
01:20:37You have to go find Max.
01:20:38Yes.
01:20:39Is he here?
01:20:40Yeah, he's at the garden.
01:20:41Okay.
01:20:42Hi, gotta go. Okay, bye.
01:20:44All right, everyone, if I could have your attention, please.
01:20:47We are about to announce our winner of the Emerging Artist Showcase.
01:20:52If I could have my judges step on stage with me, please.
01:21:02Max!
01:21:04Max!
01:21:05I have to talk to you.
01:21:07Uh, can I wait a minute?
01:21:09I'm sorry. No.
01:21:11I can't.
01:21:12I'm so sorry. I'm just in the middle of a job interview.
01:21:14Not an interview. You know the job's yours if you want it.
01:21:18The landscape architect position?
01:21:20First day.
01:21:22Give me a minute?
01:21:23Mm-hmm.
01:21:26Yes.
01:21:27Someone wise, who apparently knows how I should be living my life more than I do,
01:21:32told me that not committing comes with regrets of its own.
01:21:36And you were right.
01:21:37I would regret giving up.
01:21:39I would regret running when I was scared.
01:21:41I would regret not giving myself a chance to see who I could really be.
01:21:47Most of all, I would regret not doing everything I can to be with you.
01:21:59Hold that thought.
01:22:01My painting's being displayed and I really want to show you.
01:22:05I really want to show you.
01:22:15Jamie!
01:22:19No.
01:22:27Renee.
01:22:29After the art festival, I want you to find me so I can talk about a group show.
01:22:35Okay.
01:22:44It's beautiful.
01:22:48You know, aren't you glad you took my advice and committed?
01:22:53You know, you are still exasperating.
01:23:01You're still smiling.
01:23:35You're welcome.
01:24:35I love you.
01:24:36I love you.
01:24:37I love you.

01:24:48I love you.
01:24:49I love you.
01:24:50I love you.
01:24:51I love you.
01:24:52I love you.
01:24:53I love you.
01:24:54I love you.
