Dominic Scurr reflects on Eddie Howe's pre-match press conference ahead of Newcastle United's trip to Leicester City.
Transcript
00:00Hello everyone, I'm here outside the Newcastle United Media Centre
00:03where we've been speaking to Eddie Howe,
00:05head of Newcastle United's trip to Leicester City in the Premier League
00:09on Monday night, follows on from Newcastle's big 2-1 win against Brentford
00:15at St James' Park on Wednesday.
00:16It wasn't the prettiest game, wasn't the greatest game,
00:18but Newcastle got the job done, avoided a Carabao Cup hangover
00:22and have their sights on potential Champions League qualification
00:26with nine games left to go.
00:27Obviously, Chelsea's win against Tottenham last night
00:30moved Newcastle back down to sixth in the table.
00:33They'll have a potentially clearer picture by the time the play Leicester
00:37on Monday night, with the weekend's fixtures out the way.
00:40But in terms of Newcastle, team news,
00:43we saw Alexander Isak, Kieran Trippier go off against Brentford,
00:46Joe Linton also struggling with his knee.
00:49Eddie Howe said all those three players will be assessed over the next few days,
00:53but nothing serious in terms of the injuries they picked up.
00:59Alexander Isak just felt his groin before the Brentford game,
01:02but felt he was OK to continue, but could only get through about 65 minutes in the game.
01:08Kieran Trippier went off again with a groin issue in the closing stages
01:12and Joe Linton went down receiving treatment,
01:14but managed to get through the 90 minutes.
01:16And Eddie Howe said, knowing Joe Linton, he will say he's fine.
01:19So of all the players regarding injuries,
01:22Joe Linton certainly sounded the most positive.
01:25But sticking on injuries, Anthony Gordon is obviously back available
01:28following suspension, but picked up what Eddie Howe described as a really,
01:32really bad knock while on international duty with England.
01:37So still not training fully with the Newcastle squad yet.
01:40So he remains a big doubt for Monday night.
01:45But Eddie Howe did speak quite a bit about Harvey Barnes,
01:48who would be making his first return to Leicester City,
01:52having joined Newcastle from Leicester back in 2023 for around £38m.
01:57It's been an interesting spell at Newcastle for Harvey Barnes.
02:01He's had some great moments.
02:02You go back a year ago, those two goals against West Ham to complete the comeback.
02:07Incredible.
02:07But I think in Anthony Gordon's absence, he's been almost quietly effective,
02:11enjoying maybe his best run of games in the side, even though he hasn't necessarily scored.
02:17Although Eddie Howe did cheekily credit him with the assist for
02:21Sandro Tonali's strike against Brentford, which I mean, is technically true.
02:25But yeah, looking ahead to Leicester, these are the games Newcastle,
02:29I mean, Eddie Howe said every game is a must win.
02:31That's a cliche, as we know, and there are no easy games.
02:34But Leicester, they've lost the last seven without scoring at home.
02:39Leicester are 12 points adrift.
02:41Looking ahead, if Newcastle are serious about their Champions League ambitions,
02:44this is a game they absolutely have to win.
02:47And we'll have all the fallout from Eddie Howe's press conference
02:49and looking ahead to Leicester, as well as the game itself
02:53down at the King Power Stadium.
02:54From myself at Domsker on X, as well as the Shields Gazette website,

03:02Thanks for watching.
03:03See you at Leicester.
