Dominic Scurr reflects on Newcastle United's press conference with Eddie Howe on deadline day.
Transcript
00:00I'm here at the Newcastle United Media Center where Newcastle head coach Eddie
00:04Howe has been speaking on deadline day. Newcastle have a game against Tottenham
00:09Hotspur on Sunday but that definitely took, well you'd almost forget because
00:14transfers were the big talking point. Eddie Howe asked numerous questions about
00:19Newcastle's transfer activity, the summer as a whole, ran for about 45 minutes in
00:24total. The live stream may have cut off a little bit earlier, there was a section
00:27at the end for added written questions but yeah it was a long one, it was a
00:31tough one for Eddie Howe but he probably stood up to most the questions
00:37reasonably well. He did say Newcastle have struggled, it's been a difficult
00:41window. Is he expecting any business in the final hours of it? Possibly not but
00:47he said it's hopeful, the club are still going to be active right until the
00:51deadline but obviously a big blow this week. In terms of mark A, the club have
00:55been really active in terms of trying to agree a deal with Crystal Palace for
01:01the England defender but so far that's not materialised and barring a miraculous
01:07U-turn from Palace that won't materialise. So Eddie Howe was asked
01:12about mark A, he wouldn't bite on that but then an interesting
01:16question was have Newcastle almost put too much energy into trying to sign mark
01:22A and neglected maybe signing other players, what Eddie Howe described as the
01:26right players and Eddie Howe insisted that was not the case. The club have been
01:30spinning plates if you want to use an old phrase and been looking at all
01:35fronts, all areas to strengthen. He admitted that the team isn't
01:40necessarily stronger at this stage than it was when it started the
01:45transfer window and PSR a big reason for that with losing Elliot Anderson and
01:49Yancuba Minte. So yeah it's been a difficult window, will we see any
01:54incomings? It doesn't look likely, Eddie Howe wouldn't completely rule it out and
01:58one question asked Eddie Howe, it's now two transfer windows now without a major
02:02signing since the club played in the Champions League so is that progress and
02:06Eddie Howe couldn't really answer, he understood the question but couldn't
02:10really answer because it doesn't look good when you put it like that. So yeah
02:16followed that up with a question about PSR and whether because Eddie Howe kept
02:21going back to PSR and saying look that's almost shackled Newcastle in recent
02:26transfer windows and PSR it it's not a new thing but points deductions and the
02:31sort of teeth to PSR have become a bit more pertinent in 2024 really with
02:36Everton and Nottingham Forest getting that points deduction. So I said Newcastle
02:40basically paying the consequences for taking risks regarding PSR, Eddie Howe
02:44refuted that, he said no I don't think so PSR again is something that's only
02:49really come into play in the past year or so for Newcastle United. So yeah
02:56difficult press conference for Eddie Howe, he stood up to most things. Well did we
03:01get the answers we were looking for? Probably not but he was certainly asked
03:07a lot of questions about transfers and the sort of dynamic regarding
03:13everything that's happened this summer which has been a frustrating one and
03:18Eddie Howe's still satisfied with the squad he has though did admit there was
03:23probably a couple areas ideally you would have looked to strengthen and
03:27would have liked to strengthen but he said the right players haven't been
03:31there which seems hard hard to believe really when you consider the teams in
03:35and around Newcastle have been doing business have been signing players the
03:39money was there to spend on mark a 70 million pounds of it the sort of latest
03:44reports latest offer for for the Crystal Palace defender so could that money have
03:50been used elsewhere according to Eddie Howe no so make of that what you will
03:55and it's been a frustrating one it's been a frustrating summer and it looks
03:58like it's gonna continue that way but if anything does happen be sure to follow
04:04the Shields Gazette, shieldsgazette.com where I'll be active all day until the
04:08deadline even after it because probably gonna see a couple of younger players
04:13couple of players leave so have to be have to stay busy but in terms of
04:18incomings it may be a little bit quiet but yeah stay tuned follow myself Dom
04:23Skur on Twitter for all the latest updates throughout the day and of course
04:27Shields Gazette online. Cheers.
