00:00EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen says the EU is preparing for further countermeasures against
00:07US tariffs.
00:09US President Donald Trump has declared a 10% baseline tax on imports from all countries
00:16and even higher tariff rates on dozens of nations.
00:20US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the United States expects its NATO partners to
00:27start prioritising defence.
00:30European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the EU is preparing for further
00:36countermeasures against the 20% tariff on European goods announced by US President Donald
00:43Trump.
00:44We are prepared to respond.
00:47We are already finalising the first package of countermeasures in response to tariffs
00:52on steel and we are now preparing for further countermeasures to protect our interests and
01:00our businesses if negotiations fail.
01:05On Wednesday, the US President announced a minimum 10% tariff on all countries, with
01:11the EU added to a list of 60 worst offenders, facing a higher tailored rate of 20%.
01:19He also announced a 25% tariff on all automobiles made outside the US to be implemented with
01:26immediate effect.
01:29Sweden and Ireland have already issued statements saying they regret the additional tariffs,
01:35which will come into force next Wednesday.
01:38However, Irish Deputy Leader Simon Harris urged the bloc to remain calm and measured
01:44in its response.
01:46The statement this morning by European Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen clearly sought
01:52to reassure Europeans that the EU is ready to protect itself from Washington's decision
01:57to impose tariffs.
01:59Speaking from Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where she will later attend the first ever EU-Central
02:04Asia Summit, von der Leyen said Europe has everything it needs to make it through this
02:08storm and is now preparing further measures.
02:11But she nonetheless made it clear that Europe wants a negotiated solution because it stands
02:17for fair and rules-based trade, which will be one of the main messages in her talks with
02:22Central Asian leaders today and tomorrow.
02:25Alice Taidi, in Samarkand, for Euronews.
02:31My fellow Americans, this is Liberation Day.
02:34US President Donald Trump has declared a 10% baseline tax on imports from all countries,
02:40and higher tariff rates on dozens of nations that run trade surpluses with the United States.
02:46Imports on goods from the European Union are facing a 20% tax, Trump announced as he held
02:51up a chart at the White House.
02:54European Union, they're very tough, very, very tough traders.
02:59You know, you think of European Union, very friendly.
03:02They rip us off.
03:03It's so sad to see.
03:05It's so pathetic.
03:0639%, we're going to charge them 20%, so we're charging them essentially half.
03:12Trump promised Americans that factory jobs will return back to the United States, but
03:17his policies risk a sudden economic slowdown as consumers and businesses could face sharp
03:22price hikes.
03:23For decades, our country has been looted, pillaged, raped, and plundered by nations
03:28near and far, both friend and foe alike.
03:32American steelworkers, autoworkers, farmers, and skilled craftsmen, we have a lot of them
03:37here with us today.
03:39They really suffered gravely.
03:41They watched in anguish as foreign leaders have stolen our jobs, foreign cheaters have
03:47ransacked our factories, and foreign scavengers have torn apart our once beautiful American
03:54dream.
03:55Trump's announcement threatens to upend much of the architecture of the global economy
03:59and trigger broader trade wars.
04:02Sometime trade partners, including the EU, have already hit back at previously announced
04:06tariffs on steel and aluminium.
04:09U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the United States has prioritized defense and
04:17now expects its partners to do the same.
04:22Rubio spoke ahead of a joint meeting of NATO foreign ministers, having arrived in Brussels
04:28just a day after Trump announced sweeping global tariffs on exports to the U.S.
04:34And so we do want to leave here with an understanding that we are on a pathway, a realistic pathway,
04:39to every single one of the members, committee, and fulfilling a promise to reach up to five
04:44percent of spending.
04:46Trump's presidency has marked a shift in global relations, with European allies increasingly
04:52concerned by his readiness to improve U.S. ties with Russia, which sees NATO as a threat.
05:00This unease has been deepened by recent White House insults directed at NATO allies Canada
05:06and Denmark, along with a warning from U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that U.S. security
05:12priorities lie elsewhere, namely in Asia and on the U.S.'s own border.
05:20As a result, European governments are developing plans to assume more responsibility for their
05:26own security, with hopes of preventing a vacuum if U.S. troops and equipment are withdrawn.
05:34Rubio stated, however, that Trump is not against NATO, but he is against a NATO that does not
05:39have the capabilities it needs to fulfill its obligations.
05:47World leaders have been reacting to U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of a 10 percent
05:52baseline tariff on all countries, with Australia threatening to use dispute resolution powers
05:59in its free trade agreement with the United States.
06:03We will continue to make the strongest case for these unjustified tariffs to be removed
06:08from our exporters. Our existing free trade agreement with the United States contains
06:13dispute resolution mechanisms.
06:17China, which was hit with an extra 34 percent tariff, has said it will resolutely adopt
06:23countermeasures to safeguard its rights and interests, claiming Trump's so-called reciprocal
06:29tariffs violate international trade rules and amount to unilateral bullying.
06:35Japan, too, has called the tariffs extremely regrettable, with officials arguing Japan
06:41deserves an exemption considering the additional 24 percent levies already imposed on their
06:47country.
06:48And in South Korea, which was hit with a 25 percent rate, the stock market opened lower
06:54amid concerns over the tariff announcement.
06:58Although Canada and Mexico were exempt from this particular round, Canadian Prime Minister
07:03Mark Carney said Ottawa will respond, as the current 25 percent levies on steel and aluminium
07:10imposed on both nations remain in place.
07:16At least seven people have died after a boat carrying migrants from Turkey to the Greek
07:21island of Lesbos capsized, according to Greece's Coast Guard.
07:26The bodies, which included two children, were recovered as part of a search and rescue operation.
07:33Twenty-three other people were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital.
07:39The operation is ongoing, with three Coast Guard vessels, an Air Force helicopter and
07:44a nearby boat all combing the area for any further potential victims.
07:54Israel's military operation in the Gaza Strip is expanding to seize large areas, the defence
07:59minister announced.
08:02Israel Qatar said the offensive would expand to, in his words, crush and clean the area
08:08of militants and seize large areas that will be added to the security zones of the state
08:13of Israel.
08:17While he didn't specify which parts of Gaza would be seized, Qatar announced an extensive
08:22evacuation of Palestinians from fighting areas.
08:28Israel has long maintained a buffer zone inside Gaza along its security fence.
08:33This has greatly expanded since the war began in 2023.
08:38Israel says the buffer zone is needed for security, while Palestinians view it as a
08:43land grab.
08:46Qatar's announcement came as Israel continued targeting the Gaza Strip with overnight strikes,
08:52reportedly killing at least 30 people.
09:03At least four people have died following a Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian city
09:08of Krivyi Rih.
09:10The head of the city's military administration said a large fire broke out and several apartment
09:15buildings were damaged.
09:18Fourteen people were injured in the strike, according to the regional governor, including
09:22an eight-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl.
09:25Krivyi Rih is the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and lies around 70 kilometres
09:31from the nearest front line.
09:39Europe has around 2,000 combat aircraft.
09:43While European models like the French Raphael, the Swedish Gripen and the European Typhoon
09:47Consortium make up the bulk of the continent's air force, the F-35 from America's Lockheed
09:54Martin is a must-have.
09:56Italy has ordered 90 of this aircraft, Germany 35, Belgium 34 and Poland 32.
10:05All in all, Europe will be able to rely on a further 200 American aircraft in the coming
10:10years.
10:12This comes at the risk of maintaining its military dependence on the US despite EU calls
10:17for strategic autonomy.
10:26When it comes to air force, American technology has an advantage over European aircraft.
10:57The question is, of course, whether for modern combat operations, stealth is something
11:04absolutely required, or whether we can do without it and rely on aircraft that are
11:09able to present a high level of discretion.
11:17Questions are also being raised concerning Washington's ability to ground aircraft
11:21through the possibility of using special software.
11:25However, using this kill switch could deal a blow to American reliability and the lucrative
11:30exports of its military industry.
