00:00A powerful storm hit the Greek islands of Paros and Mykonos, triggering widespread flooding
00:07and destruction.
00:11Thousands of Palestinians fled Gaza's southernmost city of Rafah after Israel issued new sweeping
00:17evacuation orders.
00:22A powerful storm hit the Greek islands of Paros and Mykonos on Monday, triggering widespread
00:27flooding and prompting authorities to close schools and impose a ban on all traffic except
00:33emergency vehicles.
00:35Heavy rainfall in Paros' main towns of Perikia and Naoussa caused floodwaters that surged
00:41through streets, carrying cars and debris past whitewashed buildings.
00:47Authorities on Paros said 13 people stranded in the storm were taken by firefighters to
00:52their homes, adding that no one was reported injured or missing.
00:57On Mykonos, where the flooding was less intense, excavators were used to clear a path for floodwater
01:03and it gushed past seafront cafes and restaurants.
01:07Several islands near Paros in the Cyclades group, which is southeast of the mainland
01:11in the Aegean Sea, remain under severe weather warnings through Tuesday.
01:23Thousands of slaughtered farm animals are set to be buried in a small town in northern
01:27Hungary near the border with Austria.
01:31They were ordered to be killed after an outbreak of foot and mouth disease on a farm in Laval.
01:37It can take up to 10 days before all of the cattle animals are slaughtered.
01:41A huge animal mass grave was excavated for the more than 3,000 animals.
01:47In addition to lime and straw, a two-metre layer of soil will be placed over the carcasses.
01:53But some locals are concerned that the carcasses could contaminate groundwater.
01:58The disease was identified last Wednesday, after which the decision was taken to call
02:18the animals.
02:21Police officers are checking that only vets and workers are allowed on the affected premises.
02:28The owner of the Western Gate Cooperative, an Austrian-born Hungarian citizen, has been
02:32keeping animals in Laval for 30 years.
02:36Now his entire farm could be at risk.
02:39All the cattle on the farm needs to be slaughtered, despite only 5 per cent of the herd being
02:44infected.
03:12The mass culling of healthy cattle can also be very emotionally distressing for livestock
03:17farmers.
03:18Trucks arriving at and leaving the farm are also disinfected.
03:49Another outbreak of foot and mouth disease has also been detected in Slovakia, with trucks
03:53having to pass through a disinfectant at the border crossing with Hungary.
03:58Efforts by the U.S. government to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion, or TEI initiatives
04:25in Europe, have not gone down well in the continent.
04:28The European Commission acknowledged awareness of a letter sent by the U.S. administration
04:32urging companies to drop TEI programs.
05:00In France, resistance has been particularly strong after reports emerged that the U.S.
05:04State Department demanded that French companies abandon inclusion policies which are part
05:08of national as well as union law.
05:11Le Figaro published what it claimed was a copy of the letter, stating that an executive
05:15order signed by President Donald Trump in January applies globally to all suppliers
05:19of the U.S. government.
05:21French Foreign Trade Minister Laurence Saint-Martin told RTL Radio that France would not compromise
05:26on these principles.
05:28Belgium also pushed back against perceived U.S. interference.
05:31Finance Minister Jean-Jean Bond declared we have no lessons to learn from the leader of
05:35America.
05:36In a joint statement, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévost and Equal Opportunities Minister
05:40Rob Beinders condemned the move as a step backward, asserting that diversity and inclusion
05:45strengthen economies and societies.
05:48In Spain, Barcelona's mayor announced his municipal government will defy Trump's rollback
05:52of DEI initiatives which had impacted cultural programs hosted by the city.
05:58Across Europe, leaders have stressed that diversity and inclusion are non-negotiable,
06:02a reflection of deeply held values rather than mere buzzwords.
06:10The leader of the far-right national rally, Marine Le Pen, was found guilty of embezzling
06:15public funds and was barred from running for office for five years with immediate effect.
06:21The sentence has effectively barred her from running in the 2027 presidential race, even
06:27if she appeals, something she described earlier as political death.
06:32Eight national rally MEPs and their 12 assistants have also been found guilty and barred from
06:37running for office.
06:38Le Pen and the 24 other members have been accused of using money intended for European
06:43Parliament aides to pay staff who worked for the party.
06:47The court estimated that the European Parliament's total loss was 2.9 million euros, with Le
06:53Pen personally embezzling almost half a million.
07:01Five people were killed and four injured after an explosion rocked a coal mine in northern
07:05Spain on Monday.
07:07Two of the injured people were transferred to a hospital in a city nearby to be treated
07:12for burns.
07:13Another was taken to another neighbouring hospital with a head injury.
07:17National emergency services confirmed two other people were uninjured in the accident.
07:22Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, offered his condolences to the relatives of the deceased
07:27and thanked emergency workers.
07:36Belgium's public services and transport were heavily disrupted and the country's two largest
07:41airports came to a standstill as a result of a nationwide strike.
07:45The Christian and Socialist trade unions organised the strike in protest against budget
07:50cuts announced by the government.
07:52These would impact pensions, unemployment benefits, public services and the labour market.
08:06Brussels' airport cancelled over 200 outbound flights and most incoming flights while there
08:11was no in- and outbound traffic at Charleroi Airport altogether.
08:16Meanwhile public transport across Flanders and Wallonia has been severely disrupted.
08:21Several schools are closed and certain public services are also at a standstill.
08:26Many Belgians feel let down by their government and strikes are becoming increasingly more
08:50common across the country.
08:52After nationwide strike also took place in February, tens of thousands of people had
08:57swept the streets of Brussels to protest.
09:07Thousands of Palestinians fled Gaza's southernmost city of Rafah on Monday after Israel issued
09:12new sweeping evacuation orders covering most of the city and nearby areas.
09:18Chief of UNRWA, the UN agency helping Palestinian refugees, said that roughly 140,000 people
09:25are impacted by the orders, which indicate the Israeli military could soon launch another
09:30major ground operation there.
09:32Meanwhile, the Israeli military continued its ongoing ground operation in the north
09:37of Gaza and claimed it killed 50 Hamas militants there.
09:42Israel ended a ceasefire with Hamas renewing its air and ground war earlier this month.
09:47It also cut off all supplies of food, fuel, medicine and humanitarian aid to the enclave.
09:53The Israeli military refused to withdraw its troops from the Rafah border crossing, as
09:58agreed in the ceasefire deal signed in January, and is instead proposing an alternate deal
10:03for another temporary ceasefire.
10:06Hamas has insisted on implementing the signed agreement, calling for a lasting ceasefire
10:11and an Israeli pullout in exchange for the release of the remaining hostages.
10:19The death toll in Friday's massive earthquake in Myanmar has passed 2,000, state media reported.
10:27According to reports, the victims include 200 Buddhist monks who were crushed by a collapsing
10:34monastery.
10:35Fifty children killed when a preschool classroom crumbled and 700 Muslims struck while praying
10:42at mosques for Ramadan.
10:44While rescue operations are still ongoing, efforts have been hindered by collapsed bridges,
10:50landslides, unreliable communications and a civil war.
10:54Aid groups say the quake could worsen hunger and disease outbreaks.
11:00Myanmar's resistance movement did announce a partial ceasefire to facilitate rescue efforts
11:05earlier.
11:07While Chinese rescue teams have pulled six survivors from the rubble in severely hit
11:13Naypyitaw and Mandalay, the EU has announced 2.5 million euros in aid for Myanmar.
11:20The epicentre of Friday's 7.7 magnitude earthquake was near the city of Mandalay.
11:26Then on Sunday, a 5.1 magnitude aftershock hit the area again.
11:32In neighbouring Thailand, rescuers continue to search for survivors at the site of the
11:37collapsed building in the capital Bangkok.
11:40There, at least 18 people have been killed, 33 are injured and 70 are missing.
