00:00Donald Trump threatens a 200 percent tariff on alcohol imports from the EU after Brussels
00:06put a 50 percent duty on U.S. made whiskey.
00:10Russia has said it is entering the final stage of recapturing the Kursk region.
00:15This as U.S. officials travel to Moscow for ceasefire talks.
00:20As the United States moves closer to Russia, European powers are scrambling to reassess
00:26their defense strategy.
00:29U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 200 percent tariff on wine, champagne
00:37and other alcoholic drinks imported from the EU.
00:41Trump said the threat would remain until Brussels removed a 50 percent duty on U.S. made whiskey.
00:46The charge on whiskey was in response to Trump's 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
00:53In a post on Truth Social, Trump blasted the EU as one of the most hostile and abusive
00:58taxing and tariffing authorities in the world.
01:01He also claimed the bloc was formed solely to take advantage of the United States.
01:07The tit-for-tat tariffs are a further escalation of a trade war which has rattled financial
01:11markets and raised concerns over the impact on consumers.
01:16And European alcohol firms saw their shares plummet in response to Trump's threat.
01:23The specter of a transatlantic trade war looms again over the U.S. and the EU.
01:36The EU replied with countermeasures to the United States' 25 percent tariff on imports
01:41of steel and aluminum.
01:44But the commission's president stressed that tariffs are bad for business and worse for
01:49consumers.
01:51When it comes to the reserves, natural reserves like steel and aluminum, will ultimately have
01:59an impact on the production machine at the European Union level.
02:04However, we cannot be certain if these tariffs especially accommodated, accompanied by additional
02:13policies from the EU institutions, this response of 26 billion in tariffs from the EU will
02:21create ultimately an inflationary impact for the EU citizens.
02:26Recent research from the Kiel Institute has proven that the tariffs from the U.S. to the
02:30European Union will first and foremost hurt the U.S. in terms of inflation, employment
02:36and growth.
02:38But what about European citizens?
02:43There are different channels on how tariffs could ultimately affect the citizens.
02:47Maybe citizens, when they see imported goods being more expensive, they will switch their
02:52consumption to domestic goods.
02:54However, we also have two very severe problems to think about, which is going to be the monetary
03:00reaction and the financial market reaction.
03:03According to the analysts, the EU remains dependent on the U.S. financial system, and
03:08a possible recession in the U.S. could influence the European economy.
03:14We are still uncertain on what is going to happen on U.S. and consequently international
03:19growth because now more and more analysts discuss about the prospects of a U.S. recession.
03:25I will not exclude this scenario.
03:27Even Donald Trump during his State of the Union speech recently, he's in front of Congress,
03:33he mentioned that things could get worse before they get better.
03:37And if we keep that in mind, that can translate into a recessionary impact worldwide.
03:44The analyst says that although the EU has reacted more effectively to global crises
03:49before, it is still quite unprepared to deal with an extensive global recession.
04:01The Russian military says it has taken back control of Sochi, the largest town in the
04:06Kursk region controlled by Kiev.
04:11It released images of what they say are Russian troops recapturing a town in the area.
04:18The Kremlin's spokesperson claimed on Wednesday that Moscow's operation to remove Ukrainian
04:22forces from Kursk had entered its final stage, while Ukraine's army commander-in-chief
04:28suggested his troops were pulling back to minimize losses.
04:34Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said negotiators were on their way to Russia to
04:38present a 30-day ceasefire proposal backed by Kiev.
04:43This was confirmed by the Kremlin.
04:46Trump declined to give any further details, but said he'll do, quote, devastating things
04:51to Russia's economy if they don't accept the deal.
04:57Moscow has not publicly said whether it supports a ceasefire or not.
05:12Defense ministers from five major military European powers, France, Germany, Italy, Poland
05:19and Britain, met on Wednesday in Paris to discuss a new security framework for Ukraine
05:26as a response to the rapprochement between the U.S. and Russia.
05:31This meeting came a day after 34 military chiefs from NATO countries as well as Japan
05:37and Australia met in the French capital in rare and confidential talks without their
05:44U.S. counterparts.
05:46French Defense Minister Sébastien Le Corneuil said during a press conference on Wednesday
05:52evening that at this stage 15 countries are interested in continuing this process of
05:57developing this new security framework.
06:01France and Britain have been leading the charge to try to shore up as much support as possible
06:07for Ukraine since the U.S. have started to pull back.
06:11Le Corneuil also announced that a new meeting will be held in two weeks with more defense
06:17ministers and without the U.S. present in order to come up with more concrete proposals
06:25on security guarantees in Ukraine.
06:31Defense spending is one of the most debated issues in Europe.
06:35Pressure has been growing on some EU members like Italy and Spain, which have yet to meet
06:40NATO's target spending.
06:42But what does public opinion in the country say?
06:44According to a recent poll, Italians appear to be deeply divided on the issue.
06:49The poll suggests that Italians are both for and against increased defense spending in
06:54equal measure, with supporters of the Five Star Movement being mostly against it.
07:00The majority, 41 percent of Italians, are set to oppose deploying Italian soldiers to
07:06Ukraine unless it's part of a UN-led peace mission.
07:10But let's put the question straight to them.
07:15Do you support the plan to rearm Europe?
07:17Because I believe that Europe, at this particular moment, needs to be able to defend itself.
07:25Do you agree with the principle of deterrence, that is, weapons are needed to avoid war?
07:32Absolutely not, because it's useless to arm ourselves for wars that are useless.
07:40So, completely opposite.
07:43No, it's useless for Italians to go there.
07:46Let's just kill each other and that's it.
07:48No, I'm against war, against weapons, against everything.
07:52I'd say that money can be spent on other things.
07:56If there's a madman who wants to expand, we have to see how far he wants to go.
08:04We have to defend ourselves.
08:06That's all.
08:08Although largely endorsed by the Italian government, they rearmed Europe, a plan to
08:12strengthen the continent's defence capabilities has drawn mixed reactions from political parties.
08:42The Congolese government is to meet with the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels for peace talks
09:06in Angola next week.
09:09Tensions escalated between the two after the militant group took control of the strategic
09:14Congo city of Goma in January.
09:18M23 is one of the around 100 armed groups that have been vying for a foothold in mineral-rich
09:24eastern Congo.
09:26The announcement comes after several cancelled peace talks hosted by mediator Angola that
09:31had previously excluded M23 rebels and instead focused on the Rwanda backers.
09:38The conflict between the two has created one of the world's most significant humanitarian
09:42crises, with more than 7 million people having been displaced.
09:52Images of Israeli jets striking what they say was a command centre of the militant group
09:57Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Damascus.
10:02The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the building targeted was located
10:06in the north-west of the Syrian capital and that one person was killed.
10:12Wherever terror activity against Israel is organised, al-Jilani will find the air force
10:17aircraft flying above and striking terror targets, Israel's defence minister said,
10:23referring to the interim president of Syria, Ahmed al-Sarra.
10:28Israel has carried out heavy air strikes against Syrian military infrastructure since December.
10:36At least 11 people were sent to the hospital with injuries after a 4.4 magnitude earthquake
10:45struck Naples.
10:47One woman was injured after part of the ceiling fell.
10:52Several buildings were damaged, including a church and a seven-storey residential building.
10:57The tremors loosened stone and cement on facades and fallen rubble fell on multiple vehicles.
11:05The earthquake struck at a depth of roughly two kilometres underneath the town of Pozzuoli.
11:10Many people were woken up by the tremors at night and fled to the streets or spent the
11:15night in their cars.
11:18The first tremor was followed by several minor ones with magnitudes recorded up to 1.2 on
11:23the Richter scale.
11:25Seismologists reported an increase in activity in the area recently.
11:29Last summer, authorities carried out drills in preparation for potential future emergencies.
