00:00The government is not considering imposing its own tariffs in retaliation to the U.S.'s

00:0724% reciprocal tariff on Malaysian imports.

00:11The Investment Trade and Industry Ministry said it viewed the tariffs seriously and would

00:15actively engage U.S. authorities to reach a solution that upholds free and fair trade.

00:22The ministry expressed confidence that the economy would remain resilient, with domestic

00:26demand as the main driver of economic growth.

00:30It said the National Geoeconomic Command Centre will evaluate the impact of the tariff and

00:35consider a comprehensive strategy to mitigate its effects on Malaysia's economy and industries.

00:42MITI also said it would leverage Malaysia's trade and investment framework agreement with

00:46the U.S. to seek reciprocal trade gains while pursuing a technology safeguards deal with

00:52Washington.

00:54It said despite the trade deficit in goods, the U.S. enjoys a trade surplus in services

00:59with Malaysia, reflecting strong bilateral economic ties that support jobs and economic

01:04growth for both nations.

01:07It said this trade deficit was also due to the long-standing presence of U.S. firms operating

01:12in Malaysia, especially in the electrical and electronics sector.
