00:00One of the key goals of the Granger market renovations is to address the market's current anonymous feel.
00:06As Paul Stewart, Newcastle City Council's Head of Property explained, many people walk past the market without realising it's there.
00:13To remedy this, the refurbishment will include improved signage, better social media visibility and physical upgrades that aim to make the market more inviting.
00:21The improvements are designed to increase foot traffic and attract both locals and tourists to explore the variety of stalls and services offered.
00:29The plans for Granger market's renovation include the installation of automatic sliding doors at all 14 entrances, which will help reduce drafts and keep the market warmer in winter.
00:39New paving and plants will also be added around the building to make the entrances more noticeable.
00:44The arcade area will undergo a complete overhaul to provide space for cultural events and live performances, with a new staircase leading to a seating area on the previously inaccessible upstairs balcony.
00:55Underfloor heating will be installed in the new seating area, making it a more comfortable place to relax.
01:01Other upgrades include new terrazzo flooring tiles in the arcade, as well as refurbished toilets to enhance the overall customer experience.
01:10The market will also benefit from updated deco, included colour changing LED lighting in the alleyways, improved signage and a fresh new look to the interior and exterior of the building.
01:20These changes are intended to make the market more attractive to visitors and ensure it stands out in the city's landscape.
01:27While Granger market is home to a mix of traditional shops and street food vendors, the council has emphasised the importance of maintaining a balance.
01:35Currently, about 30% of the market consists of food businesses and the council does not plan to exceed this proportion.
