00:00A ship filled with gold and other treasures worth more than 13 million dollars
00:05was found in the middle of the Namibian desert after almost 500 years.
00:10The person at the origin of this discovery was looking for diamonds,
00:14but she ended up finding something much more precious for history.
00:18There were blocks of copper, wood, pipes and elephant defenses.
00:22The miners on site called an archaeologist who quickly realized
00:26that it was not a disturbed beach as he thought, but a wreck.
00:31All the evidence indicated that it was a Portuguese merchant ship,
00:35the Bom Jesus, which had disappeared in the 16th century.
00:39Experts think it was a type of special ship,
00:42larger, more solid and more efficient than the old ships of Portugal and Spain.
00:47These ships were built to take Portuguese explorers on long voyages
00:52to distant countries like India, China and Japan,
00:56and return with tons of goods.
00:58The Bom Jesus probably carried treasures from Lisbon, the Portuguese capital,
01:03to the west of India.
01:05But it seems that by going around the southern tip of Africa, near Namibia,
01:08a big storm had pushed the ship too close to the shore.
01:11The ship would then have hit a rock,
01:14would have capsized and would have broken before dark.
01:17Archaeologists found under the water the treasure of the captain,
01:21who probably escaped when the wooden hull of the ship broke.
01:25They also found pieces of the ship scattered along the shore,
01:29probably because of the violent storm,
01:31and later, construction work carried out in the region.
01:35The storm must have been very violent,
01:37but as they did not find many bones,
01:39they think that most of the crew members survived or were lost at sea.
01:44The ship was divided into three sections and was incredibly well preserved,
01:49thanks to the thick layers of sand that covered it and prevented it from rotting.
01:53Archaeologists who studied the wreck discovered more than 40 tons of rubble.
01:58There were cannons, swords, metal blocks, lead and tin,
02:03fabrics and tools that sailors used to locate themselves with the stars
02:07when they crossed the ocean.
02:09But the most exciting discovery remains that of 1,845 copper ingots,
02:15weighing a total of 16 to 17 tons.
02:18These copper ingots, pieces of pure metal, are still in very good condition,
02:22because the hull of the ship and the layers of sand protected them from seawater.
02:27Scientists even managed to read the marks that had been engraved on them,
02:31and learned that they had been made by a very rich German commercial company.
02:35There were also more than 2,000 gold and silver coins from different countries,
02:40and 105 huge elephant defenses weighing about 2 tons.
02:44The defenses were probably intended to become luxury objects,
02:48such as jewelry or sculptures.
02:51Archaeologists took DNA samples from the defenses,
02:54and discovered that they came from elephants from the forests and savannas of West Africa.
02:59The researchers were lucky,
03:01because the ship was in a restricted access diamond extraction zone.
03:05No picker had been able to get hold of the treasures before them.
03:09The Jesus Bomb remains the oldest and most precious wreck ever discovered
03:13off the west coast of Sub-Saharan Africa.
03:16Another recently discovered wreck, by chance,
03:19was buried under a sand dune 3 meters high near the Caspian Sea.
03:23Some call it the largest lake in the world.
03:26And its water level goes up and down over time due to climatic changes.
03:31These changes can move the sand and bring to light, along the coast,
03:36objects such as this wreck and other treasures.
03:39It is because of the slow disappearance of the dune that the ship began to appear.
03:43Before digging it up, scientists feared that the waves would damage the wreck.
03:48To protect it, they erected a wall with several thousand bags of sand,
03:53forming a dig.
03:54When the ship was finally unearthed,
03:56they discovered that it was a merchant ship,
03:593 masts, 28 meters long, with a solid double hull.
04:03Wood samples have determined that the ship
04:06was built between the 18th and 19th centuries
04:09from trees such as wild pine,
04:11epicea and meleze from the Volga or Caucasus region.
04:15They even found rye and plants from the same region,
04:19which were probably exchanged or used to feed the sailors.
04:23This proves that the ship was part of a group of merchant ships
04:26that once sailed on the Caspian Sea.
04:29One day, an amateur fisherman who had dived 6 meters under the sea
04:33off the Turkish coast, noticed huge metallic remains.
04:36He had an underwater camera,
04:38so he filmed his discovery and brought it to scientists.
04:42They immediately opened an investigation
04:44and learned that it must have been a wreck
04:46from the first decades of the 20th century.
04:49It was a ship from the Ottoman Empire
04:51whose mission was to deliver goods,
04:53but which had disappeared without a trace.
04:56Scientists obtained permission to study this wreck
04:59of the Black Sea in detail,
05:01in order to learn more about these mysteries.
05:04They hope to find these identity papers,
05:06which will allow them to obtain some answers,
05:09because the ship itself is in very poor condition
05:11and difficult to manipulate.
05:13Submarine robots belonging to an oil and gas company
05:17have spotted hundreds of old intact wrecks
05:20on the seabed of the Eastern Mediterranean.
05:22Experts think these wrecks are 3,300 years old.
05:26It would therefore be the oldest wreck
05:28of ships discovered at sea.
05:30The wrecks were probably used to store oil
05:33or other agricultural products such as fruits.
05:36This proves that the people who made them
05:38also dealt with maritime trade
05:40and possessed incredible navigation skills.
05:44This also indicates that the sailors of Antiquity
05:46were able to cross the Mediterranean
05:48without having to look for coasts.
05:51All they could see was the horizon,
05:53and they had to use the sun and stars to navigate.
05:58Off the coast of Sicily,
06:00under six meters of sand and rocks,
06:02archaeologists have discovered such an ancient wreck
06:05that they are not even sure of the materials
06:07used to build it.
06:08They think the ship dates from the 2nd or 6th century B.C.,
06:12which means it would be more than 2,500 years old.
06:15This ancient ship was not alone.
06:18Researchers have also found two iron anchors
06:21in the shape of an inverted T dating from the 7th century B.C.
06:25as well as four stone anchors dating from prehistory nearby.
06:29One of the stone anchors was broken
06:31and it is possible that it was fixed to the seabed
06:33using pieces of wood.
06:35They discovered that the ship itself
06:37had been built according to the technique of the hull.
06:40The wooden boards of the ship were so tightly assembled
06:45that they could support the ship on their own
06:48with additional beams added just to make it more robust.
06:53Unfortunately, the wooden hull of the ship is now very fragile
06:57because tiny marine creatures have damaged it over the centuries.
07:01Scientists are very careful when studying it
07:03and make sure that it does not deteriorate.
07:06This discovery is very important
07:08because the ship was built at a time
07:10when Sicily was a very strategic place for regional trade.
07:14At that time, the Greeks and the Punic
07:16tried to take control of the seas
07:18long before Rome became the dominant power of the Mediterranean.
07:22By studying this ship,
07:24scientists hope to learn more
07:26about the way people traveled
07:28and did business in this distant era.
07:31Another wreck, this time off the coast of Kenya,
07:35could come from the last voyage of Vasco de Gama.
07:38This Portuguese explorer was the first European
07:41to reach India by sea
07:43bypassing the Cape of Good Hope.
07:45Local fishermen discovered the wreck in question in 2013.
07:49When a submarine archaeologist came to examine it,
07:52he found some treasures.
07:54Elephant defences and precious copper ingots.
07:58If this discovery really has something to do with Vasco de Gama,
08:01it must date from the 16th century.
08:031524 was the year of his third and last trip to India.
08:07De Gama led a huge fleet of 20 ships,
08:11one of which was the Saint-Aurore.
08:13Most of the ship is hidden under layers of coal
08:16and a whole team of scientists carefully dig trenches
08:19to find parts of the hull and hull of the ship.
