00:00We Liberal Democrats believe in free trade and we don't want there to be any tariffs
00:04but Donald Trump is starting a tariff trade war and so we think the government should be
00:08preparing some plans for retaliatory tariffs but at the same time we've got to show we've got other
00:14options on the table so it's the same time as talking to Donald Trump about a possible trade
00:18deal on services the UK government should be talking to the EU about a better trade deal
00:24on goods and a customs union by 2030 at the latest. Donald Trump has started a trade war
00:28the question is how we respond. We know that Donald Trump is an unpredictable and unreliable
00:34partner and the only language he understands is the language of strength so we think it would
00:38be irresponsible and a dereliction of duty if the government were to rule out any retaliatory
00:43tariffs it has to remain an option on the table we're not calling for the tariffs to be implemented
00:48straight away but we are saying that the government should at the very least be preparing
00:51for retaliatory tariffs like many other countries are doing.
