00:00And it's true, it's really hot, but what are the things to remember when the weather is hot?
00:07We will be able to find out live, the one and only Mr. Chris Perez, Assistant Weather Services Chief of PAGASA.
00:12Sir Chris, good morning. Welcome to Unang Init.
00:15Sir Chris, what are the first things we should monitor, especially now that it's officially hot?
00:20First of all, as much as possible, we should avoid outdoor activities in the scorching heat of the day.
00:26Usually, that is in between 12 to 3 in the afternoon.
00:29Because the so-called prolonged exposure to heat can lead to heat cramps or heat strokes,
00:35especially to our senior citizens.
00:38So, to our citizens who cannot avoid being exposed to the heat of the day
00:42due to the nature of their work, like those in the construction industry,
00:46we ask them to drink a lot of water from time to time.
00:50Thank you, Sir Chris.
00:51Sir Chris, in the outlook of the scorching heat throughout the country, will it be as hot as last year?
00:57Well, as of now, we're approaching the neutral condition.
01:02We don't have El Niño or La Niña.
01:04Usually, we expect it to be really hot when it's time for El Niño.
01:07But because we expect that during the second half of this year, our climate condition will be neutral,
01:13we don't expect it to be hotter than last year.
01:16But we still remember that during the scorching heat,
01:19we should monitor the forecast products as much as possible
01:23so that we can take appropriate action with regards to any planned outdoor activity that we will do.
01:28Sir Chris, the announcement of the official summer,
01:34will it be longer than last year or will it be on time?
01:37Well, if we look at the last five years,
01:39the termination of our Northeast monsoon and our declaration,
01:44the start of the scorching heat is really normal.
01:47It's in the middle of March up to the third week of March.
01:50Sir Chris, what is the highest possible heat index and where is it possible to feel it?
01:56As of now, in our today outlook, here in Metro Manila,
02:00we expect it to rise up to 41 degrees Celsius.
02:03But in other parts of our country, of course, we're not ruling out the possibility
02:07that maybe our highest during the duration of this dry season in our country
02:12will reach 48 to 50 degrees Celsius.
02:15That's too hot.
02:17Sir Chris, where is it possible to have a heatwave?
02:21The heatwave is more felt in the countries that we call the mid-latitude areas,
02:27the ones that usually go through the four seasons.
02:29The heatwave is usually two to three days
02:32when your daytime temperature will rise by at least 0.5 degrees Celsius or higher.
02:38Here in the Philippines, all throughout the year, we're exposed to the heat.
02:43So even if there are minimal changes in the daytime temperature,
02:46we won't immediately feel it.
02:50In other words, we won't be able to classify as experiencing a heatwave.
02:54But we still expect that as we approach the dry season,
02:58hotter or warmer days, or even at night,
03:02we'll possibly experience a hotter temperature compared to the monsoon.
03:06Speaking of the heat, are we expecting a peak?
03:09Or is this the time that we'll experience a hotter temperature compared to the coming days?
03:16Climatologically speaking, sir,
03:18our highest temperature is felt during the months of April and May.
03:23So this is the peak of the heat in our country.
03:26So likely, this March, we might experience a hot weather, especially in the afternoon.
03:31We still expect this to continue.
03:34And possibly, we'll experience a higher one.
03:37Not only the daily temperature, but also our computed heat index value.
03:41What is the difference between the highest record temperature and the heat index?
03:46This is to make it clear to all our listeners.
03:49Well, this highest recorded temperature,
03:52this is the ambient temperature,
03:54in other words, the temperature around us,
03:56that is measured based on our weather instruments,
03:59what we call a thermometer.
04:01This is what it measures.
04:03Now, the heat index,
04:04this is the actual one that a person experiences when the temperature is high
04:08and the relative humidity is also high,
04:10or what we call the wind noise, the moisture content.
04:13So this is why usually, our daytime temperature,
04:17as I said, it's just measured by a thermometer, a weather instrument,
04:21it's just the temperature.
04:22So that's why the heat index value is higher
04:24because we also take into account the relative humidity
04:27and what will be the effect of this on the actual feeling of a person.
04:30Let's move to another topic, Sir Chris.
04:32How is the low-pressure area that we are advancing now in Mindanao?
04:36Well, for now, the chance of it being a storm is small,
04:39but it's possible that it will return here in the central and southern part of our country.
04:43So to our fellow countrymen here in Eastern Visayas,
04:46in Caragan, Northern Mindanao area,
04:48please continue to monitor our updates.
04:51And to the possible localized thunderstorms and rainfall advisories
04:54that will be issued by our Pagasa Regional Services Division.
04:57Will there be a chase here?
04:59As we can see, there are none this month of March,
05:02but we're not ruling out the possibility, right?
05:05For the months to come, for example, April and May,
05:08either one or up to two thunderstorms are possible to experience here in our country.
05:12But now, is there an outlook for this year, Pagasa, for the many thunderstorms to come in?
05:16Our extended outlook until September,
05:19that is, this April, either none or one,
05:23May or June, one or two,
05:25then July, August, September,
05:27it's possible for two to three thunderstorms to arrive each month.
05:30That's great. Thank you very much, Sir Chris Perez.
05:33Once again, Assistant Weather Service Chief from Pagasa.
05:36Good morning, sir. Thank you.
