Rob Gregson discusses the fallout for the Pittsburgh Steelers after Russell Wilson elected to sign with the New York Giants.
Transcript
00:00For all the Steelers fans hoping that Russell Wilson wouldn't be back next season,
00:04you finally got your wish. As he joins the New York Giants,
00:07the emphasis is now on Aaron Rodgers who has two choices left regarding his NFL future.
00:15Hey everyone, Rob Gregson of A to Z Sports Pittsburgh and today we're going to discuss
00:19the fallout of Russell Wilson's decision to sign with the New York Giants.
00:24Let's go back to last season. It all starts when he and the Steelers go on a losing streak.
00:29Obviously, that leaves a sour taste in the mouths of many. Teammates, coaches, front office,
00:34they start to look around like, dang, do we really want to re-sign the guy
00:38that just lost us five straight games? Well, that answer quickly became no when it was well reported
00:44that he and OC Arthur Smith had a horrible working relationship by the end of their
00:49time together last season. That was only backed up this week when Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports
00:55came out and said that Mike Tomlin, of all people, no longer had the same relationship
01:01with Russell Wilson that he once did. I mean, that is a damning statement. Mike Tomlin
01:07single-handedly recruited Russell Wilson. Mike Tomlin was the one who inserted Russell Wilson
01:13into the starting lineup over Justin Fields despite the fact that he had a winning record
01:17and Mike Tomlin was the one who stood by Russell Wilson in the middle of that losing streak when
01:23many were wanting Justin Fields back in the starting lineup. The fact that he turned on
01:29Russell Wilson or no longer has the same relationship says all you need to know about
01:34Wilson and his time with the Steelers. And frankly, we have a well-documented history at this point.
01:39It ended poorly between he, John Snyder, and Pete Carroll in Seattle. Last year, head coach of the
01:46Denver Broncos, Sean Payton, couldn't wait to get him out of Denver, taking on the largest
01:51dead money cap hit in NFL history, and now after just one year with the Pittsburgh Steelers,
01:56he is gone. So what does that mean for their quarterback situation? Well, obviously,
02:01they were already all-in on Aaron Rodgers. This only further emphasizes that. Aaron Rodgers'
02:08top two choices outside of the Pittsburgh Steelers were the Minnesota Vikings and the New York
02:13Giants. It became clear last week that Minnesota is no longer in play, or at least at this time,
02:19and with the signing of Russell Wilson, the Giants have planted their flag as to who will
02:24be their starting quarterback in 2025. So now the Steelers' only competition is what? Retirement.
02:30That's right. They have to decide if walks on Malibu Beach or darkness retreats are more important
02:38than being the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback if they are in Aaron Rodgers' camp. That's what
02:44they're discussing right now. And for Aaron Rodgers, he doesn't strike me as the kind of guy
02:49that wants to go out after what just happened the last two years with the New York Jets.
02:53So the Steelers are looking like they might finally get their wish,
02:57and Aaron Rodgers could be headed to Pittsburgh very soon.
