Two presidents, two messages on the Covid crisis.
Transcript
00:00We will soon end the pandemic and we will save millions and millions of lives,
00:05both in our country and all over the world. And we've already started.
00:09My first hundred days won't end the COVID-19 virus. I can't promise that.
00:15But, but, we did not get into this mess quickly.
00:20We're not going to get out of it quickly. It's going to take some time.
00:23We're here to discuss a monumental national achievement.
00:26We're in a very dark winter. Things may well get worse before they get better.
00:32If authorized, tens of millions of vaccine doses will be available this month,
00:37and we'll get it distributed very quickly. We'll have that all set,
00:40and hundreds of millions more will quickly follow.
00:42Distributing it is another Herculean task. This will be one of the hardest and most
00:47costly operational challenges in our nation's history. We're going to need Congress to fully
00:54fund vaccine distribution to all corners of the country, to everyone.
00:58And we think by spring, we're going to be in a position that
01:02nobody would have believed possible just a few months ago.
01:08Amazing. Really amazing.
01:12They say it's somewhat of a miracle, and I think that's true.
01:15We need to level with one another.
01:18It'll take longer than we would like to distribute it to all corners of the country.
01:23Since April, advances in treatments have already helped reduce the mortality rate by
01:2885 percent. Think of that, 85 percent.
01:34It's an incredible number.
01:36More than 285,000 dead Americans because of COVID-19 and counting.
01:44Last week, COVID-19 was the number one cause of death in America.
01:50For Black, Latino and Native Americans, who are nearly three times as likely to die from it,
01:57COVID-19 is a mass casualty.
02:00People that aren't necessarily big fans of Donald Trump are saying whether you like him or not,
02:05this is one of the greatest miracles in the history of modern day
02:10medicine or any other medicine, any other age of medicine.
02:14To the American people, I know we've all had a lot of sleepless nights this year.
02:20So many of you staring at the ceiling tonight worrying, my God, what happens?
02:24What happens if I lose my insurance? What happens?
02:28Am I going to be OK? Is my family going to be OK?
02:30In just a few minutes, I'll sign an executive order to ensure that the United States government
02:36prioritizes the getting out of the vaccine to American citizens before sending it to other
02:43nations.
02:43They'll work with my foreign policy and national security teams
02:47because we can only beat the virus here at home.
02:49It must be beaten everywhere or it comes back to haunt us again.
02:52I think that the vaccine was our goal.
02:55That was number one because that was the way it ends.
03:00Masking, vaccinations, opening schools.
03:05These are the three key goals for my first 100 days.
03:09But we'll still have much to do in the year ahead and sadly, much difficulty as well.
03:15And within a short period of time, I think we want to get back to normal.
03:19The very standard phrase, we want to just get back to normal,
03:21get back to where we were a little more than nine months ago.
03:24We're doing incredibly.
03:26I know that out of our collective pain, we're going to find a collective purpose
03:32to control the pandemic, to save lives and to heal as a nation.
