Some women remember it as a beautiful experience while others felt it was awkward and embarrassing...

00:00So when I was eight years old, in the third grade, my grandmother picked me up from school.
00:05When she picked me up from school, she said,
00:07Tiana, you have mosquito bites on your chest.
00:10I'm like, mosquito bites on my chest?
00:21The school sent home a letter to my parents telling them that it was time that I start wearing undergarments to school.
00:30I kind of grew up in a pretty Catholic and religious and like very modest sort of home.
00:49And so this entire subject was super awkward.
00:53I was influenced by my sister. She's four years older.
00:57And so I would steal her bras.
01:01My mom and I had no idea what we were doing when it came to fitting me for a bra.
01:07So we had a sales representative come over.
01:09What she ended up bringing for me to try on was a horrible beige, military grade, ace bandage looking front closure bra.
01:21My mom just handled it. I'm sure she just guessed like 32 AA. You know what I mean?
01:27I tried it on in the store and it was a weird feeling because it was the first time that I really wore anything in that region of my body.
01:41I got every color. I got a pink bra, white bra, blue, yellow, purple, green.
01:48So each bra I tried on, I came out and I was telling my grandmother, my mom how the bra looked, the size, and they made sure that it fitted correctly and that the bra wasn't too big or too small for me.
02:01It was very bright and colorful and had a lot of sparkles.
02:06And as a preteen girl, I was living the dream.
02:18When I was growing up, there were all of these rules about what kind of silhouette you should have, whether or not heavy girls could wear horizontal stripes, mixing and matching patterns, wearing dark colors to kind of hide yourself away.
02:42And I would tell my younger self that none of that is actually true at all.
02:48The most important thing is wearing what makes you feel comfortable.
