The 'Survivor 48' cast members talk with Parade about their favorite moments in the show's history.
Transcript
00:00Hey everybody, before we get into this video just wanted to give you a quick heads up because I know I certainly have gotten questions on some of these preseason videos as to why so and so is missing when I'm covering, you know, the answers from the entire cast to just to shed a little bit of light as to my process.
00:21There are some times during some interviews where you know we go off in certain directions on certain topics I come in with questions that I want to ask and just for one reason or another those questions might not be asked by the time that our time is done.
00:36I will say for this video which has the Survivor 48 cast talking about their favorite moment in Survivor history.
00:44There is one person who I was not able to get an answer from in our interview that is David Kinney who is a stuntman on this season well he's a stuntman in real life but also on this season.
00:57For what it's worth if you check out my interview with David which you should over at Parade.com he does admit that he is not incredibly well versed in Survivor history.
01:09So if there is an answer unfortunately I wasn't able to get it might have been you know the proper one to do so but regardless the next one that I should do should have everyone's answers contained therein and we did get 17 out of 18 very interesting.
01:25Moments from Survivor history from this very interesting cast.
01:29Hope you all enjoy.
01:30What's your favorite moment in Survivor history.
01:34You know what my favorite moment Michelle another amazing Jersey girl winner when she I think it was winners at war.
01:43Yes it was winners at war and she was talking to Boston Rob about like her controversial win and Rob was like you won he was like if you win you win he was like there isn't controversy like you won you won and that's it and he kind of just like squashed in the butt.
02:00And I was just like I love that realness of Survivor like him lifting her up and her sharing her vulnerability about her win which is like you won like you're still being vulnerable being like insecure about that.
02:13I mean there's a million amazing moments I love when Jeff like I love the banter between Jeff and the tribes and like there's just so many good things but I love that moment and that like really stuck out in me where it was like Survivor.
02:25Not that my whole life I didn't know it was more than a game but I was just like wow like there's some life lessons here.
02:32I just immediately thought of when I think it was Eric she sort of influenced him to give the necklace yeah give it to me.
02:42You feel bad for the guy but I mean it's like that's just the power of like just having that genuine connection that I hope to have in this game but just to be able to say give me this okay now goodbye.
02:57Yeah.
02:58That's just amazing.
02:59Number one I'm sitting in my spy shack like I say that to my husband all the time.
03:03Are you are you building a spy insert down here.
03:06Maybe.
03:07Okay.
03:08Wouldn't you like to know.
03:09We'll see.
03:10We'll see out there.
03:11Maybe we won't.
03:12Maybe you'll be disguised.
03:13I definitely right.
03:14I definitely have some some some tricks up my sleeve.
03:17But yeah I mean Tony iconic that's an iconic moment.
03:21Another one that I think is just like legendary like how did this even happen is the season where Brandon and coach made the whole survivor tribe into like a cult.
03:33The level of power you have to have to get all these people on board to be like okay we're going to pray before dinner okay we're all going to like do this whatever like that.
03:42And I mean I come from you know I was going to ask like I'm spiritual I have faith but that isn't I would never impose that like it's so wild to me that they built that and people went along with it.
03:55Yeah.
03:56It makes me realize like okay cults are real and people will follow you.
04:00It's all about the confidence.
04:02Well I like I was saying I like the earlier seasons even though I don't remember them but because Survivor was so new.
04:07Right.
04:08And now and I hate to say this I don't like super fans I don't think super fans make the game better.
04:13I don't think people practicing in their basement makes this game better.
04:17I think I think coming out and challenging yourself and not knowing what to expect then knowing that puzzle is going to be on here and I can do it with my eyes closed you know it's sort of cheating to me.
04:28I don't know.
04:29Interesting.
04:30So would you have a favorite moment from like a modern season from a recent season that you saw.
04:35Not that I can think of.
04:37I like all the moments.
04:38I think they're all really really I mean to me it's taking 18 strangers.
04:43It's like it's like an experience a weird scientific experiment that they take 18 people strangers from all different places of the world and throw them on an island and starve them to death and make them do these challenges to earn food to earn stuff and see what happens and nobody can predict what can happen.
05:01It's like putting 18 mice in a cage you know and seeing who's going to be the lead mice you know.
05:07So I don't know.
05:08It's just it's a great experiment.
05:10Yeah.
05:11I can't wait to see what happens.
05:12I think my favorite moment is kind of like a heartwarming one.
05:16OK.
05:17And when Noelle who she had one leg and she had to go across a little balance beam.
05:22Oh my God.
05:23And she could not do it over and over just kept falling off it and she got so frustrated and you could just see it and I just felt so bad.
05:29I really liked her.
05:30And I was like oh my gosh like she has to do it.
05:32Everyone else is way past that part of the challenge.
05:34They're all throwing their bags by now.
05:35And and finally she gets across that beam.
05:38She goes up.
05:39She throws her bags like one after another lands all of them and she won the challenge.
05:43And it was just like the biggest comeback story.
05:45And it just showed like so much heart and grit and dedication that she didn't give up.
05:50And that's how I want to play is I want to be that person who doesn't give up and like you're going to get knocked down.
05:54And I see that and I'm like she got up and she had one leg to get up on and she still did it.
05:59Like I think she's so cool and I want to be like her.
06:02Oh another outstanding question.
06:08I would say one of the most.
06:17I would say the most powerful moment for me.
06:19The outstanding moment.
06:21Okay so I'm tying it off between two of them.
06:24You can say both.
06:25Okay.
06:27I really want to when it was heroes versus villains in that entire season.
06:34I want to say that in the very beginning just the man the combination of of just true hate for each other.
06:46And this kind of villain versus hero.
06:49I had never seen something unfold almost so naturally.
06:53Yeah.
06:54That was genuine between so many different players.
06:56And every time I watched there was another soap opera within that.
07:00And that season specifically because especially in the beginning some of those challenges.
07:04I couldn't believe how physically demanding they were.
07:07They were breaking people's toes in the first moment.
07:10Exactly.
07:11And I thought wow.
07:13And he was going to be one of my top two also.
07:15But that and then also a combination like that season is pretty epic.
07:19And then the Gen X.
07:20Because I empathize with that.
07:23Yeah.
07:24I've always battled that old generation versus new generation.
07:29And then to see it play out and go okay well let's see.
07:32Have those discussions.
07:33Have it outright.
07:34I thought that was I was it was intoxicating.
07:37It was intoxicating to me because it's a sensitive subject.
07:41And then when you put it in an environment like this it's perfect amount of drama with suspense and then adversity.
07:48I mean there's just so many good memories to pick from.
07:50Yeah.
07:51And you know even just like on the show but even like off the show Mike.
07:53Like we had so many watch parties in college.
07:55We've had watch parties like almost every Wednesday night to be honest with you.
07:58You know there's some nights where I'd be working and I'm like listen.
08:01Dad can I change the shift here because I gotta get home.
08:04So we'll have our Luigi's pizza and we'll watch it as a family.
08:06I think that's like kind of my favorite memory even though it's every week.
08:10But it's like a recurring aspect where like you know as a family we know we can sit down for an hour and a half.
08:14And just like forget about the world.
08:15Like let's tune in to see what Jeff does this week.
08:17I mean there are just like tiny stupid things that are coming to my head.
08:24Of course.
08:25Like Natalie Anderson trying to like mock someone on that challenge where she like I think Keith spat out or someone spat out.
08:31And she spat it like just came back and hit her on her chest.
08:33I feel like sometimes that could kind of be me trying to be like yes look I'm one of the boys too.
08:38And it's just like Camilla you're 5'1".
08:40Your voice has not dropped.
08:42It just never dropped.
08:43It's still super high.
08:44You're not going to be one of the boys.
08:46Oh my god.
08:48My favorite moment I mean going back to season 37 when they used their advantages together.
08:53Yeah the whole like John Hennigan minority vote split.
08:57Minority vote split.
08:58The Goliaths just sounded so confident.
09:01They thought they had this in the bag.
09:02Dan had two idols.
09:03I mean I also really liked the Goliaths too like Alec and Dan and everyone.
09:06But the Davids just banded together.
09:08They trusted each other.
09:09And it was multiple idols.
09:10It was an idol nullifier.
09:11It was like a steal a vote.
09:14I forgot the one guy.
09:15He was like Bing.
09:16Carl.
09:17And I was like oh my gosh if I could be on the island I would rally the Misfits together.
09:23And we would go together and be like let's take down these big guns.
09:26Because there's some pretty big people here on the island right now.
09:29So interesting.
09:30Can I give you two?
09:31Oh please.
09:32There's like two for very different reasons that come to mind.
09:33Yeah.
09:34The first is Keith is one of my favorite.
09:35He was one of my favorite players.
09:38Him driving the tuk-tuk on the island is like one of my favorite things.
09:43Like that was one of the first seasons that we watched season one that bounced around after I watched season 40.
09:47And that was like one of the first scenes that I can visually remember.
09:50And I was like here's this guy like just with a complete group of people that he would have no business being around otherwise.
09:56Excelling with them and connecting with them.
09:58And the tuk-tuk scene just like tied that all together.
10:00And then the other one is just on Ben's season when Dr. Mike says like he has like a ferocity that transcends this game.
10:08I think that is like one of the most underrated Survivor lines in the entire world.
10:12I mean it's hilarious.
10:13That is like the very definition of a deep cut.
10:16I love it so much.
10:17No.
10:18Don't apologize.
10:19Listen.
10:20You're not going to apologize to me for quoting a random quote from Survivor 35.
10:23There's mutual awe going on right now.
10:26There we go.
10:27There we go.
10:28Oh my god.
10:30Okay.
10:31Yeah.
10:33Yes.
10:34This was wild.
10:35When Denise got Sandra out.
10:39That was fucking crazy.
10:41That was fucking crazy.
10:43And then afterwards when Sandra was offered the chance to stay and play the game she was like I'm good.
10:51Yeah.
10:52I don't have anything to prove.
10:53I am the queen.
10:55And I know my worth and I'm going to leave this game for people for my predecessors to pick up.
11:03Yeah.
11:04The whole thing was just crazy.
11:05I mean like Sandra had I feel like an uncharacteristic moment of weakness in which she led with her heart rather than her head.
11:14And Denise just snuck in there and just decimated her like that.
11:21Yeah.
11:22For Sandra to be so uncharacteristically emotional.
11:25For Denise to sneak in at the perfect moment.
11:28And then for Sandra to just so gracefully accept defeat.
11:33Yeah.
11:34I think that was one of the best moments.
11:35Greatest moments on Survivor.
11:37Man.
11:38I'm going to give you two.
11:41Please.
11:43I think when Kelly Wentworth played her idol and she didn't go home and it ended up being Savage home.
11:57One hell of a move there was crazy.
12:02And then another move that was honestly just like really heartbreaking to watch was in Game Changers when everyone played their idol.
12:15Those edges to read with.
12:17The idol give it.
12:18The idol take it.
12:20From the first time she played I loved her.
12:24But watching her handle going out that way like wrecked me.
12:31And I'm like I would have probably like had an emotional breakdown in that moment.
12:40Because she was playing such a good game like nobody voted for her.
12:44Like she like.
12:46Oh my gosh.
12:47It was tough.
12:51I'm so lame.
12:52But Dre.
12:53I don't want her to see this and be like this girl is obsessed with me.
12:56But the moment when she was in Tribal Council and they did that.
12:59I don't play although it wasn't like super sneaky or anything.
13:03It wasn't like out in your face flashy.
13:06It was very much.
13:07It is what it is.
13:08Yeah.
13:09But it was the speech in the conversation that happened after that.
13:11That was very impactful.
13:13And like Marion didn't have to play her idol at all.
13:16No.
13:17And she did it as a symbol of like I stand with this too.
13:20Like.
13:21Yeah.
13:22I can appreciate that.
13:23No I think it was it was a really impactful moment for everyone involved.
13:25Obviously because then you have like the Jonathan side of things right.
13:28Because like I did not realize that this was a thing.
13:30And like that that speaks power as well.
13:32And there's this idea of what's great about the new era.
13:35And I think the social politics involved is that I do think it gives people more permission to be more open about that.
13:41Or as opposed to maybe seasons prior.
13:43It was something that had to be hidden.
13:45And I'm so glad you said the Jonathan piece.
13:47Because when he outright was like I'm not racist.
13:49Like that's not what I'm saying.
13:50There's so many people who was watching the show that had that same thought.
13:54That he actually brought.
13:55It's like you're being real.
13:56All of you guys are being real.
13:57You're putting the game aside for a second and just having a real ass conversation.
14:01Yeah.
14:02Yeah.
14:03I liked that.
14:04It's just a silly one.
14:05I mean silly ones are great.
14:06We love the silly moments.
14:07Yeah.
14:08Ozzy having the opportunity to bid on an item.
14:11For 420.
14:13Yeah.
14:14Yeah.
14:15Ozzy being like 420 to the camera is an all time great moment.
14:18And then he's guzzling the soft serve right out of the machine.
14:20Yeah.
14:21It's awesome.
14:22That's an awesome moment in Survivor history.
14:24I think before I knew there was a fire challenge.
14:30This is a weird awesome moment.
14:32But the upside down you.
14:36Before you knew that there was going to be a fire making challenge that saved Ben.
14:39Right.
14:40The upside down you is an all time greatest moment ever.
14:43Of just like oh here's the dude who had it.
14:47No one's had it closer than that.
14:48And for all of it to just come crashing down.
14:51That's epic.
14:53My favorite moment in Survivor history would be whenever Chris won the fire.
14:57After coming off of I think it was Edge of Extinction.
14:59That's right.
15:00Yeah.
15:01Yeah.
15:02And he won.
15:03That was crazy.
15:04Like that right there.
15:05And also to season 46 now when Kenzie was going up against Liz.
15:11And she made that fire.
15:12That was actually pretty dope as well.
15:14And then the ending for Marianne when she won.
15:17And she was like telling everybody at the tribal council why she should be.
15:21That's right there.
15:22I felt that energy.
15:23I felt her.
15:24Because she's like y'all don't know.
15:25I've been playing this game since day one.
15:27Yeah.
15:28So it's just like moments like that.
15:29Not even just from the new era.
15:31All of Survivor has changed.
15:34You don't get the same season.
15:37You don't get the same show.
15:38You don't get the same Jeff.
15:39Yeah.
15:40Jeff pulled out a pillow and got comfortable in season 46.
15:43Since when has he did that before?
15:44He gave out snacks.
15:45You don't even know what to expect.
15:47Survivor is always something new and fresh.
15:49And that's why I love the show.
15:50And I think it is honestly the best show.
15:52And I'm not just saying that because I'm on it now.
15:54I mean it's good brand representation.
15:56I told you I'm a movie TV connoisseur.
15:58Yeah.
15:59I know what I'm talking about.
16:00My most Picayune favorite moment is Parvati Shallow direct-to-camera.
16:05I think probably her first on-screen interview.
16:09Showing up for a segregated season of Survivor.
16:14And saying is this kosher?
16:16Yes.
16:17One of the best opening confessions in Survivor history.
16:20That is camp.
16:21It is so good.
16:23It might be one of the first in the season too.
16:25It is.
16:26It is.
16:27It is.
16:28It's certainly early.
16:29And you just immediately think to yourself.
16:31You have more charm and reality TV star prowess in those three words.
16:37Than some people get in a whole season.
16:40That I just live for.
16:43Is this kosher?
16:45I use it in my regular life.
16:47Probably a little bit differently applicable in your real life.
16:51Where you just go into a restaurant like was this kosher?
16:53No.
16:54Well I use it in slightly less relevant settings.
16:59Yes, you've clocked me as being Jewish.
17:02But I will use it in a scenario where it's more like we're doing something.
17:07But is this kosher?
17:09Is it kosher for us to go into the restaurant before everybody else?
17:12What do we think?
17:14It's just too good.
17:22When the Black Widow Brigade takes the necklace from Eric.
17:26I know you were mentioning Parvati and Amanda.
17:28So I didn't know if it was the kid you mentioned.
17:30Sari as well obviously.
17:31I love Sari.
17:32I love.
17:33I love.
17:34Literally.
17:35Here's my thing.
17:36I love that women are winning in the new era.
17:38I love that it's 4-2 right now.
17:40Yeah.
17:41Okay.
17:42We're gonna even that up this season.
17:43But it's gonna be another gay man.
17:45So it's like kind of the same.
17:46Do you know what I mean?
17:48Yeah.
17:49I really.
17:50I think what's really cool about that moment.
17:54On a couple different levels.
17:55Is that it was obviously women coming together.
17:57Which everyone's so scared of.
17:58And then you look at how many female alliances have actually worked.
18:02Do you know what I mean?
18:03Yeah.
18:04It's this boogie woman that makes no sense.
18:06But I love that they came together.
18:08And there was a newbie involved.
18:10I love that Natalie was a part of it.
18:12I don't know.
18:13I love that moment.
18:14I think that's probably my favorite season.
18:18I don't know.
18:19There are so many things.
18:20The show is the best.
18:21It's a big one.
18:22It's a good one.
18:23And like you said.
18:24It's a crowning moment for Mount Rushmore Alliance.
18:27I also love when Sophie Clark won her season.
18:29Yeah.
18:30I thought she really deserved it.
18:31She's probably like the player that I think I'm most similar to.
18:34Yeah.
18:35Out of everybody.
18:37So I loved her win.
18:38Literally I was like watching that.
18:39I don't remember if I was like cooking bolognese or something.
18:43I remember just like being like.
18:44This bitch doesn't take the W.
18:46I'm gonna lose my mind.
18:47Like she played so hard and so well.
18:50But yeah.
18:51I would say Parv and Sophie.
