00:57number 10 Thomas Rainwater's connection
01:011923 doesn't just dig into the Dutton family's deep roots
01:06It also sheds light on the origins of other key characters named ingredients of soap
01:14Name them oil lye and water
01:19What kind of I any kind
01:25Like prefer your answers without the flippants bands of Yellowstone will surely remember Thomas Rainwater the fierce
01:32adversary turned reluctant ally of John Dutton while it's not confirmed yet
01:37He may be related to Tiona Rainwater a young Native American who suffers greatly in a Catholic boarding school. I
01:45understand your desire to
01:48lash out at a sister who lacks compassion, but
01:51You lash out all well, I should
02:04I have compassion for you my child through her story
02:08We witnessed the harsh realities her people faced which makes chief Rainwater's modern-day fight for his tribe
02:15Hit even harder since he never knew his biological mother
02:19It totally makes sense why his connection to Tiona isn't clear yet
02:24But perhaps along the way her path might intersect with the Dutton's and reveal how she's linked to Thomas
02:32You think I'm your adversary
02:34But I'm not
02:37I'm your salvation Tiona
02:41I
02:41Am the bridge from the extinct civilization of your people to the thriving society tasked with taming this
02:50godless place
02:51number nine war heroes become hometown heroes for the Dutton men the front lines may change but the
02:59fight never ends
03:01You're going back in the army, that's what you're doing practicing for the army, right?
03:09Bills don't pay themselves son
03:11Before Casey both Spencer and James Dutton served in the military and they may not even be the only ones
03:19Casey is a Navy SEAL forged in modern combat and Spencer is a Great War veteran and they both carry the burdens of
03:27Battle, but for them shedding the uniform doesn't end their duty to their own. I wish I had something for the pain
03:34That's what the whiskey's for
03:36in 1923 when trouble comes calling Kara sends a letter to Spencer and he begins a grueling journey from Africa to
03:44Montana doesn't it just remind you of Casey stepping up to protect his kin and hometown?
03:50Because in the Dutton world the greatest fights are always for the ones they love and I just felt guilty
03:57Now, I don't know what I feel like
04:01I spend most of my time trying not to
04:03number eight
04:05Defending their home is their legacy
04:07The Dutton's are no strangers to engaging in brutal battles for their land or family's survival. We should get moving
04:16We need to take care of something first
04:18Come with us if you've followed their saga from 1883, you'd understand why the Dutton's are so proud of their home
04:27Even after getting established in Montana
04:30Enemies kept coming each one eager to take what the Dutton's built
04:34While in Yellowstone the Dutton's had to resort to murder and other shady tactics to maintain their grip on the ranch
04:41Their ancestors weren't any less ruthless. It also appears that these thieves are murderers
04:48Killing Bob Strafford in cold blood
04:51Jacob also fought dirty to protect the same soil while Costner's John grappled with land developers and a neighboring Native American reservation
05:01Jacob faced formidable threats like sheepherder Banner and a dubious mining tycoon from generation to generation
05:10It's a never-ending struggle for the Dutton's to survive
05:13Growing up, Casey never had the best relationship with his father
05:17You want to stay for supper?
05:23You can put him in the barn
05:25No, I'm not going to
05:27I'm not going to
05:29I'm not going to
05:31I'm not going to
05:33I'm not going to
05:35I'm not going to
05:37I'm not going to
05:39I'm not going to
05:41I'm not going to
05:44No
05:46I'm running for you
05:48You can put him in the barn
05:50In fact, when Yellowstone begins, he's estranged from his family
05:54The rift began when he chose to keep his child with Monica, a decision that led his father to brand him
06:00In defiance, Casey enlisted into the army, married Monica, and built an independent life
06:07He just wants to know his grandson
06:11I guess we could give him that
06:13But when a range war threatens his stay at the reservation, Casey reluctantly returns and eventually takes over the ranch
06:21While Spencer's journey is different too, he too spent years away
06:26After serving in the military, he remained in Africa, while Jacob, Kara, John, and Jack ran things
06:33It's only after receiving Kara's letter that he eventually heads home
06:37Could he be the one to set things right?
06:41Matter of fact
06:43It is
06:44Number 6
06:45Ranching is their identity
06:47Modern day Duttons may have dabbled into banking, law, or business, but ultimately it's for the preservation of their ranching lifestyle
06:57Walk out that door, and you lose, most certainly
07:02Stay, and you win, convincingly
07:06Someone like Beth may not be a big lover of the family's way of life, but she never hesitates to defend what's theirs
07:13Casey, John, Jamie, and Lee have all been ranchers at some point, whether by choice or circumstance
07:21Every day, just like this
07:23Who are you kidding?
07:25Bet you haven't fished here in years
07:28Only thing we haven't done in years is see you, Casey
07:31He told me to leave
07:33He told us all to leave
07:36You were just the only one who did
07:38Even in 1923, Jacob and his wife leave their former lives to embrace ranching, determined to keep the Dutton dream alive
07:46This prequel sees them fighting hard to safeguard the rugged life they've struggled to build
07:52When you own one of the biggest cattle ranches in America, you probably would too
07:57I have what my family fought for
08:00You want to fight me for it too?
08:03I didn't think so
08:05Number 5
08:07Playing both sides of the law
08:09After James died, Jacob had to set up as the family's patriarch
08:14Come on, let's get this over with
08:18Just like Costner's John Dutton, he served as the Livestock Commissioner, becoming the first in their history to hold the title
08:26This position gave the Duttons immense power, ensuring their control on Montana remained unshaken
08:32Before can I beat 12, Jacob?
08:35I'm not worried about the other 11, just you
08:39Fight! God damn it! We'll not have this in my town
08:43While operating like a crime family, they never hesitate to eliminate those who wrong them while their influence makes it easy to bury their own crimes
08:53In Yellowstone, Rip, John's right-hand man, hangs Wade for crossing the Duttons
09:00Similarly, in 1923, five sheep herders are executed for attacking Jack, yet none of them is held accountable
09:09Whether by violence or badge, the Duttons will do whatever it takes for their ranch and their blood
09:15Easy wasn't in the job description
09:18Number 4
09:20Spencer Dutton's connection to modern-day Duttons
09:23How is Spencer connected to John of Yellowstone?
09:27Why you go home?
09:29Family needs me
09:32Why they need you so bad? You work as sheep's engine to get back to them
09:36They're in danger
09:38This remains a big mystery in the Dutton family tree because it's still unclear who fathered John too
09:44Dad to modern-day John Dutton
09:47As the cruelty of the 20th century would have it, John Sr. gets murdered before 1923 ends
09:53With only one son at his death and Elizabeth passing soon after, it falls to Jack or Spencer to carry the family line
10:02I wouldn't say that
10:05Why would you say that?
10:07I guess I'd say I keep running into people looking for trouble and they all think trouble is me
10:14With Spencer's wife pregnant, he might be the direct tie to Costner's John
10:19Why is this important?
10:21Remember in 1883, James Dutton promised his family would hold the ranch for only seven generations
10:28Seven generations, you can have it
10:30Depending on who John Dutton's granddad is, Tate may be the last Dutton to own it
10:36Number 3
10:38Jack Dutton's link to John III
10:40Heads up, it's about to get more confusing
10:43The most direct link between 1923 Duttons and the modern-day ones might be Jack Dutton
10:50You can't win
10:54No leader
10:57Can't win without a leader
10:59I can lead them
11:01They won't follow you
11:04Not yet
11:06Now, it's fuzzy whether he is Costner's John Dutton's granddad
11:11But one thing we know for sure is that John Dutton II fathered John Dutton III
11:16This is confirmed in a flashback in Yellowstone when he has a heart-to-heart chat with his son
11:21When you get my age, the only thing you miss is being young
11:26Chance to do it all over
11:30See the look of wonder in your grandchildren's eyes
11:37Still, tracing his roots to the Duttons in 1923 gets kind of murky
11:42This is especially so because towards the end of the series, Jack's wife loses her unborn child
11:49Leaving us uncertain if she'll birth another
11:52So, the big question remains
11:54Is Spencer John Dutton II's father?
11:57Or could Jack Dutton be this enigmatic man himself?
12:01And if I can't ever have children
12:05Then you can't have children
12:09Then you'll never be a father
12:11Guess it ain't my destiny
12:15Number 2. The Dutton family's rise
12:18The Duttons didn't have the smoothest ride building their dynasty
12:23Man doesn't own the grass
12:25The mountains own the grass
12:27God owns the grass
12:30And you're no God, Jacob Dutton
12:33You're no God
12:35In fact, it was a harsh journey that cost some of them their lives
12:38But under Jacob's leadership, things gradually took shape
12:42With the help of his wife, nephew, and grandnephew, John and Jack
12:47They transformed the ranch into the thriving empire we see in 1923
12:53That's Bruce's crew
12:55Yup
12:57By God, we're putting a lot of cattle on this land
13:00Not to say they didn't have their own setbacks
13:03Between the Great Depression, violent rivals, and the unforgiving American frontier
13:09Challenges were constant
13:11However, with Jacob as the livestock commissioner
13:14The Duttons' political power in Montana finally took root
13:18One that endured through their later generations
13:21You're lucky I love you so much
13:24If I didn't, I'd ride on those mountains with a bottle of whiskey
13:28And I'd sit under a tree and I would not come down
13:30That's how much I hate getting old
13:35Watching my body betray me

13:531. The Jacob Dutton Connection
13:56Long before Costner's John ruled the Yellowstone Ranch
14:00Generations of tough Duttons paved the way
14:03One of them being Jacob
14:05We've got a big enough problem with them cattle thieves out of Wyoming
14:08We don't need a range war with sheep herders
14:11They were on their sheep on my ground
14:13And then they attacked us when we came upon them
14:16Range war's already begun
14:18But how does he connect to the modern-day John Dutton?
14:22Well, Jacob is the brother of James Dutton
14:25John's great-great-grandfather
14:27In 1894, with the ranch in jeopardy, Jacob was called back to Montana to save it
14:33Upon my father's death, my mother wrote to his brother
14:37Begging that he bring his family to this wild land and save hers
14:42With James and Margaret gone and no children of his own
14:46Jacob and Kara took in his brother's kids, Spencer and John Sr.
14:50Somewhere along the family line, the John we know today finally enters the picture
14:57Yeah, the Dutton lineage can be quite confusing
15:01Especially with too many Johns popping up in different generations
15:05You have no friends in this building, John
15:08You're gonna need to bring your own
15:10Which Dutton is the toughest of them all?
15:12Let us know in the comment section
15:14You owe my nephew a horse
