00:00The Energy Regulatory Commission and the Department of Tourism will conduct programs and activities to support our countrymen and businessmen
00:10who are affected by the lack of electricity and the direct impact of the tourism sector in their area.
00:16This is Rod Laguzad in Detail.
00:21The benefits of tourism to the economy are unprecedented.
00:25It provides jobs and businesses to many of our countrymen.
00:29In the study of the Energy Consumer Group of ILO-Philippines from September 2024 to March 2025
00:36through a focus group discussion,
00:38P5,000 to P100,000 per day are lost to medium, small and micro enterprises or MSMEs
00:46and to large companies such as resorts or hotels due to brownouts or power outages.
00:51And if there is no electricity, the operation will stop or the cost-cutting measure will be implemented,
00:56such as reducing staff.
00:58This also includes additional costs for the use of generators and the removal of guests or tourists.
01:03Their study includes Samal Island, Puerto Galera, Siargao and Cebu
01:08where there are incidents of lack of electricity supply.
01:11With this study, we want to cement that this is a gut issue that needs to be addressed
01:16because we need immediate resilience measures because it is not just a matter of inconvenience.
01:23As you shared earlier, this is a fundamental threat to our livelihood as well as our development as a nation.
01:32According to the group, infrastructure is needed.
01:35An alternative source of renewable energy and literacy for our countrymen can be reached,
01:40such as knowledge about the metrics in appliances.
01:43Its geography is also a challenge for the country.
01:45This is because many islands need electricity.
01:49Aside from businesses, it also affects the reputation of the Philippines
01:52as a tourism hub.
01:54We want tourism to be sustainable.
01:56Now, we don't just want people coming to these four areas,
01:59but we also want to be able to show the other areas of our country
02:03which have so much to offer but are not as talked about.
02:06And being able to improve the energy structures all over the Philippines
02:10can increase the ability of these different places to also make money.
02:15The Philippine Energy Regulatory Commission has recognized this
02:18and has shared the assistance brought by the implementation of the Energy Literacy Campaign
02:22and the giving of perks to businesses such as rebates when shifting to renewable energy.
02:27As for the Department of Tourism,
02:30the Department of Tourism under the leadership of our Secretary, Christina Prasco,
02:36is committed to supporting tourism development by undertaking critical institutional reforms
02:43pursuing a whole-of-government approach.
02:46According to the group,
02:47it is important for the expansion of energy forums
02:49where the various stakeholders of the tourism and energy sector are included
02:53to discuss the challenges they face as part of this discussion.
02:57Rod Laguzad for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
