00:00If a program came calling today, what kind of coaching situation would interest you the
00:06most right now?
00:08James, I want to build a program.
00:12I want to be working for an administration that wants to do that and not, all right,
00:20and maybe it's naive, I don't think it is, where we just put a team together.
00:25Let's go get a bunch of guys.
00:26I have to go get eight guys out of the portal and then I have to go get seven next year
00:29and six the next year.
00:33I want to have relationships with my guys and I want to have an administration that
00:38works closely with me.
00:40We work together to build a program, to represent the institution the right way, bring in character
00:46young people that we talked about before, play a style of play that fans want to see,
00:53and then be in a place that has a fan base that enables me to interact with them in
00:58a way that sells the program and provides opportunity for our guys.
01:05Think about what NIL was supposed to be, James.
01:07It was supposed to be opportunity for young people to profit from their name, image, and
01:12likeness.
01:13It's not supposed to be pay for play.
01:15That's what it's become.
01:16But I would want to be where we can provide opportunities for our athletes to connect
01:20with the corporate community, the business community, and prepare them for life after
01:24basketball.
01:25And in the meantime, enjoy the journey and win games.
01:29So there's a number of different places out there that that's what their goal is and that's
01:34what my goal is.
01:35I think you make a great point because, you know, it's amazing.
01:42You're not building a team.
01:44You're building a new era of tradition.
01:47You're building character.
01:49You're building a program.
01:50And I think that's something that you did at your stops at Lehigh along, you know, obviously
01:56going to UNC Greensboro.
01:58By the way, funny story, I talked to Coach McCaffrey before about me watching that video
02:03of Championship Production.
02:04Shout out to Ed Jenk.
02:05I know we lost Ed not too long ago.
02:08What a job he did with Championship Production, building a great coach's clinic.
02:12Then off to Siena.
02:13What a run.
02:14That game against Ohio State, everyone talked about.
02:17And obviously, you know, going to Iowa for 15 years is something that is absolutely amazing.
02:26Coach, before we wrap this up, anything that you want to add for people to know?
02:32Because to me, when I see you on the sideline, people see a guy that's intense, that is no
02:38nonsense, that's still, I still think about the stare down at the ref on the baseline
02:43of one game where I thought it was the entire time.
02:46If I was an assistant, I probably would have gotten in trouble because I would have tried
02:49to grab you and pulled you away.
02:52Anything else in this last minute that you want to let people know that maybe don't know
02:57about Coach Fran McCaffrey?
03:00Yeah, I think that's a great point, James.
03:03I don't want people to think of me that way.
03:07During the heat of battle, there's only one person that can advocate for the players,
03:10and that's the head coach.
03:11And that's what I do.
03:13Beyond that, I love my guys.
03:16I'm as friendly as they come when it comes to interacting with fans, with people.
03:23I don't talk much louder than this that I'm talking with you throughout the course of
03:27the day.
03:28I've got a great sense of humor.
03:30I like to have fun, not only with my job, with the guys, but in life.
03:36My assistants love working for me, and there's an incredible amount of respect that has to
03:41be across the board.
03:43And that's how I live my life.
03:45And that's what creates the passion that I have for this profession.
