00:00What did he say about what happened in Iowa City?
00:04Well, we didn't get into much of what happened in Iowa City, it's just the fact that he's not done.
00:09You know, when you look at all these coaches from these older guys, right,
00:12the Leonard Hamilton's, the Larranegas, the stuff like that, this guy wants to coach.
00:17He wants to be back out there and he makes a compelling case of the fact of his ability to create culture,
00:23his ability to develop talent.
00:26He's never had a five or four-star recruit. You know Fran as well.
00:30He's won everywhere he's gone and he's never had that high-profile job.
00:35And there's some high-profile jobs, one being Minnesota and one being Villanova.
00:39He's a Philly guy and he's someone that, if Villanova wants an experienced coach that's going to win
00:45and you provide him with in-and-out money, the guy won when he didn't have equal playing field.
00:51I think Fran could win if he had equal playing field with some of these other teams in regards to in-and-out money.
00:56But you know and I know, Pharrell, it ain't as simple.
00:59Look at Omar Balo, look at Connor Hawkins at K-State.
01:02You got to still be able to build a program the right way with the portal and other guys you have recruited.
01:09I mean, it's brutal, the business and coaching.
01:13And we've seen, like, look, Villanova stayed with Villanova guys.
01:19Look what it got them.
01:20That didn't work.
01:21Indiana stayed with Indiana guys.
01:24Look what that got them.
01:25And prior to that, they did guys that weren't Indiana guys.
01:28And look what that got them.
01:30And the thing that I think that really sticks out for me with Indiana was how they screwed up Calvin Sampson.
01:36So Sampson cheated or whatever and they just fired him.
01:41And look at him now.
01:42I mean, he is just killing it at Houston.
01:46And his team's the number one seed and it's always a top seed.
01:51And it's always going to the tournament.
01:53And they're always winning.
01:54And he's got, you know, perhaps the best defensive team in America.
01:58And Indiana fired him too.
02:00So I don't think any of these schools can get these coaches right.
02:03And I think you have to be careful, Pharrell, when you try to go get these hot shot assistants
02:08or you're keeping a family.
02:09Forget just Villanova or Indiana, right?
02:12Look at Ewing at Georgetown.
02:14Look at Chris Mullin at St. John's.
02:16You got to be careful.
02:18I mean, Hubert Davis, I won't talk about him.
02:20Because I don't even know how the hell they got into the tournament.
02:23That was a damn disgrace that they got in over teams like Boise State
02:27or honestly a team like Indiana deserved it.
02:30But to me, you got to be careful when you want to go get this hot shot coach
02:35or you want to go get the guy that's been bouncing around.
02:39I'm hearing about a guy like Richard Pitino.
02:41Listen, Richard's done a great job in New Mexico.
02:43But Richard Pitino also went to Minnesota and couldn't hack it over there.
02:47So we got to figure out here what we're doing.
02:50And with the portal and with the way things are, Pharrell,
02:54you got to be careful of who you go hire.
02:57Because now with the way these kids change teams, you've seen it, Pharrell,
03:02the leashes for these coaches have gotten a lot shorter.
03:06Did you see the interview?
03:08Because you could talk about Steve Alford the same way.
03:11When he was at Iowa, when he was at UCLA,
03:13and now he's really small school in Nevada in Reno.
03:17Did you see the interview he did talking about how to make it as a coach anymore,
03:25how impossible it is with the paying players?
03:30And he doesn't even talk about NIL.
03:33He just talks about paying players
03:37and how they are, in essence, setting them up for failure in life.
03:43They're paying them millions.
03:45Some of these kids make a million or more to play at these schools.
03:48And then when they get out and they don't make it in the NBA
03:50and they got to get a real job and they get paid no money,
03:54they don't know what hit them.
03:56They're in a shrink's office within a month when they lose it all.
04:02And he said, we're setting these kids up for failure
04:05and it's impossible to be a coach anymore in college athletics
04:09since we started paying kids.
04:11And it's interesting you said that because, you know,
04:13obviously I talked to Coach McCaffrey about it.
04:15I've talked to a couple of powerful women's coaches about it.
04:18And folks, just so you understand,
04:22it used to be you build a relationship with the kid and the parents, right?
04:27You start freshman, sophomore year.
04:29That's right.
04:30You go through the high school coach.
04:33You go through, you know, the AAU coach, the trainer.
04:36You build it.
04:37Fran McCaffrey used it best.
04:39Something I used to do in two or three years is like speed dating.
04:43You get like two weeks to figure these kids out.
04:46And the crazy thing, Pharrell, is you're not dealing with the parents now.
04:50You're dealing with agents.
04:52And I talked to a coach that told me, not Fran, another coach,
04:56that said that there are times agents that are calling on behalf of kids
05:02to get offers and they don't even have the kid yet.
05:07That they're turning around and saying, hey, I can get you this.
05:11I can get you that.
05:12It's really dirty.
05:14This is not what NIL was meant to do.
05:17But the cat's out of the bag and we all got to play in this environment.
